I bought my Avalon from one of those questionable small dealerships about 2 years ago when getting used cars was kind of difficult. I looked it over but it was my first Toyota so I wasn't all that knowledgeable about what to look for. The fluids were clean, car needed an alignment and the oil light kind of flickered at stop lights. Car ran pretty smooth otherwise. I drove it home and immediately changed the oil, everything looked too clean to me for some reason. The oil came out completely black and sludgy, not like the pure gold on the dipstick. I also saw some metallic flakes in it. After long drives, the next time i started it, a large cloud of smoke would come out the tailpipe. Turns out, they dropped the oil pan, cleaned out the sludge with a scraper, changed the valve cover gaskets and changed the oil to sell it. I pulled the valve covers and they were full of hard black solid carbon that used to be sludge. It was everywhere, in the heads, on the cams, in the oil valleys and in the block. Some parts of the head hadn't seen fresh oil for thousands of miles and when I removed the intake, liquid oil poured out of it. A few months ago the death rattle started and I heard the rod knock. While I was waiting for this dude to show up to his dealership so I could get the plates, another guy who was also waiting told me the Jeep he bought accelerated by itself at random inconvenient times. This guy buys cars at auction out of town, polishes them up and sells them at a reasonable price but at a cost of your sanity. Beware of problem years, always check the year of your car for common problems because certain years will be prone to problems they fixed in later years.

Bought a Chevy Monza 2 + 2 back when I was in the military at a we tote the note place. Paid monthly from a coupon book with a check. After 18 month I was cut off in traffic from a left laner cutting in front of me to make a right turn. To avoid hitting him I was forced into the curb. Bent the right front rim. Called the insurance company, but to my surprise it was Lloyd Conditt Auto sales. Same place I bought the car. Had car repaired and when I went to pick it up he said he WAS CALLING THE NOTE. I MUST PAY THE REMAINING 2000. 00. I got a lawyer familiar with the neighborhood and he asked to see the contract. He said Ol Lloyd is at it again. In the SMALL PRINT buried in the contract it stated ANY TIME THE SELLER FEELS AT RISK. HE CAN CALL THE NOTE. HE DOES IT ALL THE TIME. Beware of these places. As Eric says. VERY SHADY. The fact remains that I never was late or missed a payment. 3 Grand in and 2 Grand to go and I lost my car. Young kid, no credit and didn't have 2 Grand to pay it off.

That 3. 6 liter engine is one noisy sucker! It sounds bad enough to be sent to the junk yard! Thermostat in backwards?
Plus a restricted radiator, plus a bad head gasket equals a really bad basket case! The radiator fan seems to turn on kinda
late too! I suppose that the radiator fan is supposed to turn on around 210 degrees for that matter! What a huge hunk
of junk! Like I say, this one as for the condition that it is in should be junked! I just don't think that the engine is even
worth replacing the head gasket, radiator and or even putting in a lower degree thermostat! It's not even good enough
to be a solemn beater car because it is spent already. cam, lifters, perhaps even low oil pressure as well. I do know
what it takes to even doctor a car but this one is not even worth the powder to blow it to hell!

I deliver parts to auto sales places.
They have young people working on vehicle in the back. Sometimes they order stop leak rather than fix the problems.
Then polish the turds and sell them.
I try to tell people that I know. You expect to buy a used vehicle and want it to be like brand new. Someone sold that turd for a reason.
A young lady driving a Cadillac STS drove in. She said her car has no power going up the hills or getting on the gas.
I told her. Take it to a shop. Have them check the cat's and diagnose other problems. She said the dealer told her it's a one owner vehicle. I said. probably so. Maybe never serviced it. Just drove it and buy another vehicle.

These earlier 3. 6's (which I can tell by looking at the older revision filter housing) have the heads that like to eat the cams because of the followers. In my opinion it's because they back spec'ed these engines to 5w20 from 5w30 and they don't have enough HTHS rating for the pressure the cam puts on the followers. Having 12 of the 3. 6 in the family that have always run 30wt oil with a high HTHS rating, I can tell you at least for us it has been the smoking gun and keeps them running without eating cams. The oldest is a 2012 with almost 400K km on it now (Approaching 300K miles. Just regular oil changes at a reasonable mileage. 5K miles (8K KM) or less.

I learned very young about these car lots, I bought a work van from one. Got it home needed all new brake shoes, pads, wheel cylinders, calipers, master cylinder, and all yes all new brake lines. A friend helped me do it all and he was a mechanic. When I told him where I bought it, he laughed! Said I work on that guys stuff all the time. I asked what could have made the whole brake system fail? He said they put ATF or something other than brake fluid in it. I just chocked it up to live and learn. Bring the used car to your mechanic for pre purchase inspection

I've seen far too many of these Buy here, Pay here Scam lots here too. I remember one a customer brought in, little honda civic. I found problem, he took back to scam lot, they put him in another car, a different person brought in first car with same problem, I gave dig, they took back to scam lot, they called to ask how much to fix, I gave quote, two days and a different scam lot brought same car for diag. Don't know if it ever got fixed, never saw it again, was easy to recognize the rear bumper was repainted a slightly darker color.

I had a car, once, that ran great until I slowed down like getting off a highway. Turns out the water pump impeller fins had been eaten away by whatever nonsense the owner before me had put in the radiator. Guys at the NAPA store (not sponsored) - who had all been around forever - had never seen anything like it. This, of course, was after replacing the radiator, thermostat, and everything else besides the water pump.

Interesting battery issue kind of resembled my battery issue a while back in ( I think it s a Pontiac GTO over there) when the engine bay got hot the battery would fail. I didn t fire the parts cannon but I was tempted It wasn t until I was able to test the battery when hot that I found out it failed the battery test up until that point ( when cold ) it was somewhere around 70% capacity

Pentastar engines from certain years had sand left in them from the casting process. That sand would eventually clog the radiator: / I repaired one that was overheating. Turned out it was just the thermostat. BUT, it was a pain in the who-who to purge the air out, even with the bleeder screw. Ended up getting a No-Spill funnel to help with the air. Eventually got it burped. pita

Livin on the edge. When you said most of your vehicles that come in are far due for a battery, is it the rush of getting the car on the road that you don't take a jump box with you? Would you reconsider pulling one for every test drive or is it just easier to call your brother because the random breakdown isn't worth pulling the jump box every time with how heavy it is, etc.

I got a 3. 6 that doesn't tick, but then I replaced 3 cams and all the lifters and followers. The last time I mashed the throttle on it, it cracked the crappy plastic y-pipe in the heater and left me stranded on the side of the road. I'm gonna buy all the Dorman parts that replace plastic with aluminum parts. Who'da thunk that Dorman would be an upgrade over OEM parts?

That's a pretty nice white Yoda truck you got back there on the side. I'm a Toyo guy myself. Been splashed in the face a couple times in the early days and it makes me think maybe those mid 90's Camry's had blown gaskets that weren't severe enough to lose cooling capability but just enough to build pressure at shutdown. maybe you have something to say about that.

It's funny (not funny funny haha) because all 3. 6 jokes aside when you first started it I thought wow that things clackin' like it's been hot, REALLY hot! Hot like I used to get my Red Motor Holden's Hot (the Tappet Cover Gasket used to burn & the Oil in the Lifters would boil & the Valves won't open hot) let them cool down & good to go again!

I had a similar problem with my 2003 monte carlo. It would run good on the streets but get hot on the highway. I took a chance and replaced the radiator. I cracked open the old radiator and found gasket material and silicone from when the water pump was done. Half of the radiator was clogged. Now my temp gauge doesn't even get to half.

That tester works great. My 3l ranger had a crack in the head. I had both heads redone.
I don't know if I would put too much money in the car. It has lifter/cam issues and head issues and whatever causes the other problem. I feel bad for the person that is paying for that car. This makes my winter beater van look reliable.

MLS gaskets really shouldn't fail on their own. Someone had to neglect the cooling system on that thing at one time to lead to some warpage and damage.
I spent 5 years replacing the 2. 0 and 2. 4 gaskets over to MLS and they never came back with the same issue. Lots of other issues but never a blown headgasket.

I ve never seen a flat bed like that. Freaking sweet. Mowers are mighty. I would make a rule to always have the jump box on highway burns. I feel like when I watch SMA, it s like going to your fav class back in school. Always learn cool shit and almost always entertained ( not the break down part.
Luv me sum SMA

The 3. 6 is just junk. They have numerous problems besides the horrible valve train issues. This one left Eric by the side of the road for a TPS issue when any non Chrysler/Damlier/FCA/Stellaris (or whoever has to bail them out next) vehicle would go into limp mode and get you home. Just poorly engineered junk.
