Sell your car for free with Carwow: We’ve got our hands on EVERY generation of Volkswagen Golf GTI, and they’re about to go head-to-head in an epic drag race! We’ve split it into two heats - the Mk 1, 2, 3 & 4 in the first heat, after which we’ll have a second race with the 5, 6, 7 and 8. 5 to see just how the Golf GTI has evolved over the years! It all starts with the Mk 1. It's powered by a 1. 6-litre 4-cylinder that produces 110hp and 140Nm of torque. This power is sent to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual, and the car weighs in at just 810kg. When it was new, it cost around 6, 500. The line-up then goes up to the new Mk 8. 5 edition. This is powered by a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo that puts down 265hp and 370Nm. This power is directed to the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, and it weighs 1, 391kg. As new, the car costs around 39, 000. So the newer car is likely to win, but will any of the older models spring a surprise There’s only one way to find out LET’S RACE!

coming from a M135i F20 I now own a Mk8 GTI (not 8. 5 and not CS. Ofc its 4 vs 6 cyl. and 2. 0 vs 3. 0 CC so I was aware of the less punch of the engine but:
- passenger seat heating sensor issue where the princess' ass didnt get warmed
- stranded on the autobahn because of a faulty fuel pump
- parking and lane holding sensors faulty every winter or everytime it's cold
- gearbox overheating warning when first half throttle kickdown, then fully kickdown
- no button for start&stop-function and lane-holding-function, so need to go via touchscreen
- VW stole my engine cover without replacement because of probable fire danger, so from outside when decelarating you can hear the timing chain louder than the exhaust sound
I wanted to switch to an I30N but all that hard plastic I saw inside made me stay with the GTI. It's a good everyday car with some sporty ambitions but has so much more potential if all the electronic issues where figured out

17: 30 What is happening, is that turning off stability (ESC) does not actually turn off traction control (ASR.
You can actually program the ESP button to do two out of three things: ESC Sport, ESC Off, and ASR Off.
By default from factory it is first two.

Mk1 classic beauty
MK2 my favorite classic
MK3 timeless design
MK4 best proportions and interior.
MK5 near the bottom of my list.
MK6 nothing special
MK7 (pre facelift) the best overall golf of all time.
MK8

little unfair comparisons.
Mk1 must be the 1. 8l not the 1. 6l, mk2 must be the KR with around 10hp more and the 3 door version.
Mk5 must be the dsg version, , manual vs dsg in drag is totally unfair.

mk5 - 37. 3k
mk6 - 38. 6k
mk7 - 37. 6k
mk8 - 38. 9k

This highlights two things: new models are completely different cars, not new versions and that every time the manufacturers slap the same name on a new model it will be far bigger, heavier, and dreadful.

Even though the Golf GTI MK3 was a disaster (low performance, plagued by rust, and less iconic appearance, they should've tested the 2. 0 16v ABF engine with 150BHP 180Nm. Still very much fun to watch

You should do a drag with Seat Leon Cupra gens too. Mk1, mk2, mk3 and Cupra Leon mk1. Then Leon Cupra mk1 vs the golf GTI equivalent, mk2 vs the golf GTI equivalent etc etc. That’d be a good battle.

That’s a long line of crap cars you have there!
Golf is the car you goto when you have no imagination or have given up on driving.
Worst car I ever had the displeasure of owning.

Now what exactly would happen if my tuned Golf Alltrack were in this race I would handily have the best launch of the whole lot, then I would be passed in the last half only by the mk8.

Sam laughing in that manual MR5, lol I had a manual MK5 as well and the happy pedal used to make me laugh often, I guess I have a soft spot for the MK5. Winning!

In several places this was Alan Partridge reviews the GTI!
If only it was a Megan. Which incidentally was declared Power sappingly Mundane!

I'd love a similar comparison of Volvo wagons, being the owner of an immaculate 20 year old V70T5, famously one of the highway patrol car in the UK.

Er at 1: 40 you said it use's a 5 speed box when it shows a 6 speed box. good comparison but sadly the MK1 i would choose it just looks meaner.

Thats shit.
Golf 1 1. 8 with 112hp
GOLF 2 1. 8 WITH 112 or 107hp
GOLF 3 2. 0 with 115hp
Golf 4 1. 8t with 150 HP
Not this Shit with

The MK1 lags power on top. Especially the 1. 6L version. The later 1. 8L is a bit better. I still like the 1. 6.
I miss my GLI ab bit.

reply

Small Correction:
The MK3 Golf with 115HP didn't have 16 Valves. But there was an MK3 with 16 Valves and 4 Cyl that made 150HP.

reply

Sorry mate you did get it wrong the mark IV version has a SIX speed manual gearbox clearly shown on camera
