Change your car with Carwow: It’s time for a Volkswagen showdown! We’ve got our hands on the all-new Mk 8. 5 Golf GTI, and it’s going up against the Mk8 GTI Clubsport and Mk7 Golf R! The question is, can the all-new GTI take down the other two contenders To start, let’s check out the stats. The Mk7 Golf R has a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo engine that produces 300hp and 380Nm of torque. It comes with four-wheel drive, and the power is sent to the wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The car weighs in at 1, 495kg, and when new the Mk7 R costs around 32, 000. The GTI Clubsport is also equipped with a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo engine; in this instance, it puts down 300hp and 400Nm. Power is sent to the front wheels only via a 7-speed dual-clutch, and the car weighs 1, 461kg. When new, the Clubsport cost around 40, 100. Then finally we come to the newest car, the Mk 8. 5 GTI. It also packs a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo, producing 265hp and 370Nm. Power is sent to the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch, and it’s the lightest car here, tipping the scales at 1, 454kg. Surprisingly, it’s a bit more expensive than the R, costing around 39, 000! So the Mk8. 5 GTI is the newest car, but surely it doesn’t have what it takes to bring down the Clubsport or R, right There’s only one way to find out LET’S RACE!

Matt, please. drop the hydious music on the car stats. (so far I've gotten into the video. We're SO TIRED of hearing that same b. it sont over the internet that's is painful to be forced to hear it here when the only thing we've come here is for your sense of humour, your way of portraying good content, and relaxing while doing so.

Clubsport is actually a 45th Anniversary model, no extra performance to a standard Clubsport, but worth saying still.
Quite unique for both the 7. 5 R and the CS45 to have Cup 2's on as standard, they usually ship with Continentals or Bridgestones. Really cool to see this line up though.

I liked it when you asked each driver to tell the stats. It was much engaging and I actually remembered the stats throughout the race and after that as well. Now I can't seem to grasp them or maybe I don't feel interested in how you say the stats

I'm so miffed with VW, I could scream! They somewhat fix the tech; remove the stick; limit the Clubsport to certain countries, and now, they're on the verge of collapse. The management needs a shuffle. By the way, great video Matt!

Mk7 R still the best golf, also I drive mk7 2. 0 tdi,
In my opinion its mk5 R32 and mk7 R best golfs ever, and the fact that in golf 8 you dont even get hood gas piston holder is ridiculous

Now do a PROPER Golf GENERATIONS race starring: MK1 GTI 1980, MK2 GTI 16V G60, MK3 VR6, MK4 25 Yahre edition (DUTCH MODEL, MK5 GTI Edition 30, MK6 GTI Edition 35, MK7 GTI TCR and MK8. 1 CS

Glad someone has finally acknowledged the fun the mk8 clubsport is to drive. It’s massive overlooked and actually much more capable than most other hot hatches out there imo.

I will forever say the 7R / 7. 5R is VW's greatest Golf. The way they got the interior exterior perfect is just crazy. a proper collector's item (along with the 7 ClubSport.

Working in a VW dealership my current demonstrator is a MK8 GTI Clubsport & i completely agree with Matt on the handling, it drives brilliantly. GTI CS over the R every day!

I thought my Tesla M3P with 630hp at max discharge was slow. Can't believe these hothatch only has 300hp with slow turbocharged response and weight isn't so much different.

Driving a Clubsport myself and this thing is just amazing! Love gapping other cars on the german autobahn lol. My next one will be a Golf R tho cuz of the AWD.
reply

Pheeeeeeeeewww the Golf GTI got the Horsepower and Torque it deserved. I bet the new Mark 8 GTI Clubsport will give the new Mark 8 R a run for its engine!

My experience with the EA488 engine in Audis and VW's is that it takes many miles/km's to free up fully. perhaps the 8. 5 needs more distance under it's belt.
reply

That is a 7. 5 R isn't it I had one from new and I had to get rid of it after a few years as people kept trying to break into my house to steal the keys. I miss it.
reply

Man, I didn't realize how quick the Clubsport is! I sure wish VW sold that in the States! I also didn't realize it had a bigger snail under the hood.

This video was shot on a Sunday morning, was edited on a Monday and released on a Tuesday

I dont like vw and hate the golf the most small not good looking car for 18 year old till mid 20s.
I stay with my Dodge ram best car ever build.

reply

Best drivers car clubsport. but lackin some practicality options cant be specced with a towbar as the gti 8. 5, still realy tempting regardless
reply

I really don’t like the sounds of the cracks these days. Give me a subtle and deep sounding 6 cyl without those artificial bangs instead
reply

Matt no offence but can you get back to doing some normal reviews of cars for the average person i. e. Alfa Romeo Tonale, Lexus LXB etc
