MINI Countryman review: Is it too big

Change your car with Carwow: This is the new MINI Countryman! It’s the largest MINI you can buy, and Mat’s about to see if this SUV-like MINI can compete with other crossovers such as the Audi Q2 or BMW X1! For starters, let’s check out the design. This car is distinctly a MINI from whatever angle you look at it. From the front, the car looks much more modern compared to the previous edition, and with the JCW edition we have here, there are a couple of chequered flag motifs as well as several JCW badges. Along the side alloy wheels go up to 20-inches, and being a MINI there’s lots of customisation available, such as the option to go for two-tone paint. At the back, nothing notably stands out, although this JCW edition does come with an integrated spoiler and quad tailpipes! On the inside, the revised Countryman interior is seriously nice. The main feature is a new large circular infotainment screen in the centre of the dash, which is super bright and colourful. Unfortunately, though, the system can be a little bit laggy. There are a few physical buttons and toggle switches set underneath the screen, although most functionality is managed through the touchscreen. Fabric materials adorn the doors and dash, while there’s also a small heads-up display available. There are several different engines available. The range starts with a 1. 5-litre 3-cylinder turbo petrol that can deliver 170hp and comes with front-wheel drive. There’s also a 2-litre turbo petrol, which in the S delivers 218hp, and in the JCW puts down 300hp. Both these editions come with all-wheel drive. There are also two electric editions to choose from. The single motor can put down 201hp, while the dual motor edition delivers 302hp. The Countryman range starts from around 30, 000, rising to around 45, 000 for the JCW edition. But is it worth it Stick with Mat to see for yourself! I have the previous generation Countryman and let me tell you that it feels and it’s much better than this one.
The old one feels much more robust and solid, it has also many more refined Interior materials, the door sound solid when closing and the gearbox being a torque converter one is smooth and reliable, it is a composed car for being an suv and very very spacious for its size. The new Countryman feels cheap, it’s really too big to replace the previous gen, it’s missing physical controls, better materials, sound insulation and perhaps a powerful but economical Diesel or a hybrid because those petrol are damn thirsty!
Also Matt do you really think that those pops and bangs sounds any good To me they sound like someone farting in a can.

I miss my MINI every day and thought this one would bring me back into the family. It looks good from the front, a few nice details throughout, but side and rear angles are giving me generic small SUV. Sadly the performance (always leaving you wanting a little more) is right on brand. The tech package just a little lackluster even when optioned up, again typical MINI. I've had an U25 Countryman SE reservation for over a year now, but I don't think I'll follow through. For the price, FWD biased 302hp, and size I'll just stick with my used Polestar 2 Performance. Volvo C40 and XC40 are basically the same size as well. It's a crowded segment and when you lose some of the MINIness why not just go for the option with better specs

it is actually fun, with the ENORMOUS focus there is always on Tesla, from all automtive journalists, about the placement of the speedo, and yes here you have a headsup but not standard, but on a Mini generally it has never really been a comment that the speedo is in the middle of the car.

I don't understand how these touchscreens are allowed to control so many vital functions in the car. It is done to reduce costs, faffing about in a touchscreen to change climate control is insane and dangerous. If the voice control was 100% perfect, then OK, but they never are.

Design wise the previous one will age better. I don’t get all these Chinese looks. It’s frustrating to see how all manufacturers are messing up their brand identity. I guess new buyers don’t care about it and they just want a tacky screen with flashing lights everywhere.

All of BMW’s new generation of visual designs have been a total disaster and the sales are falling off a cliff. And now it is impacting MINIs too. It’s good that today BMW is finally announcing the firing of its design team, a move that happened way too late in my opinion.

The more new Cars I See the more I like the old ones. As long as they have android Auto and Apple car play they feel more luxurious with all their buttons.
At least it really doesn’t matter what you get nowadays, as long as it fulfills your needs

It’s a BMW X1 (U11) in a Mini skin (so many shared parts, external door handles, sunroof control cluster, engines etc. The JCW is effectively the same car as the M35i. I have an X1 and it’s a troubled car. I fear the Countryman will be too.

Maybe the door handle design encourages the Dutch Reach opening of doors where you reach / turn with your opposing arm so you actually turn and look into the door window and therefore you can see if any cars are coming up from behind.

My mum has owned 3, a '62 plate, a '64 plate and currently on a 71 or 72 plate. She lives them. My brother used to own BMW 3 series, he reckons there is more space in the Countryman, not her latest one.

What happens when these screen burn out are the touch layer fails in 10/12 years or 120 k miles later Will mini keep producing screens Cars should have physical controls for main functions.

Having driven one as a loaner while my last gen JCW countryman was getting worked on, this car is awful. It's been completely immasculated. My Mini now is unfortunately the last Mini I will own.

Classic Matt. Praises Mini which has shitty controls and everybody hates it but will directly start to hate Honda CR-V s which are one of the most durable SUVs. Carwow starrting Biased Matt

These modern screens are just too complicated you want physical buttons and a nice screen and good voice assistant i think VW with the golf 7. 5and Ford got it spot on with the syc3

I can never understand why people are buying the bigger mini, they remind me of my wife gaining 60lbs since I met her, if I want a small family SUV, there are so many better choices.

The new Mini’s design is really giving me PT Cruiser vibes. Not so much in appearance, but in terms of how stunning it is. and we all know just how gorgeous the PT Cruiser is!

reply

I almost bought the original countrymen with a 6-speed manual when I was looking for a family car, but instead, I went with a tiguan. I think it was the right choice.
reply

I've had my current car for about 8 years now, and i rarely ever use the arm rest on the door. I'm shocked that's even enough of a con to even mention lol
