Change your car with Carwow: It’s time for a Volkswagen hot hatch showdown! We’ve got our hands on the Mk7 Golf GTI Performance, and it’s about to go head-to-head against a Mk4 Golf R32! But will the newer car be able to snatch the win Let’s take a closer look at the stats. Starting with the R32, it’s powered by a 3. 2-litre naturally-aspirated V6 that can produce 241hp and 320Nm of torque. This power is sent to all four wheels via a 6-speed automatic gearbox, and the car tips the scales at 1, 477kg. When this car was released in the early 2000s, it cost around 22, 300. Then we come to the GTI. Under the bonnet there’s a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo that produces 245hp and 370Nm, and this power is directed to the front wheels only through a 7-speed automatic gearbox. The car weighs in at 1, 387kg, and when new, it would set you back around 29, 800. So the GTI is slightly up on power, but will the R32’s four-wheel drive prove decisive There’s only one way to find out for sure LET’S RACE!

The Mk4 R32 is the best looking, most satisfying 'Golf platform' VW to ever come out! That car exhudes quality through and through! Imagine if VW kept the VR6 and strapped a turbo on it! Back in late 2002, I purchased a 2003 GTI VR6, not knowing that the R32 was going to be released. If I had known, I would have purchased one! However, after 22 years of ownership, my GTI VR6 is still my daily driver, and still puts a smile on my face! It hasn't had any major mechanical problems, and has been as reliable, if not more, than a Toyota! It still has the original timing chains as well, which blows my mind! When I went to Europe recently, I saw Mk4's everywhere in Greece and Italy! Which for me, doubly attests to the fact that the Mk4's were built like Panzer tanks, unlike the cheap shit junk out now! VW. take note!

I have a tuned mk7. 5 with over 300hp, about 385lb ft of torque. I'm certain I'd walk away from that R, but I'd trade in a heartbeat for an R32 with similar mileage. It's incredibly sad that both of these cars are automatics. #SaveTheManuals

I definitely figured the mk7 gti would pull away top end, still fun to see the Mk4 R32 hold him off in the 1/4 mile. I've been daily driving a mk4 r32 for 5 years now and it's been great, and yes those seats are some of my favorite ever!

Protip: If you want an R32 for cheap, buy an 8P A3 3. 2 Quattro. Basically the same car underneath as a MkV R32 but way, way cheaper because they're not as well known. I've had one as my daily for a few years and still loving that VR6 sound.

If you want to be exact, the R32 has a VR6 engine, not a V6. It's important, as without the VR concept, Ferdinand Piech would not have dreamt up the W12 (2x VR6 in a W) and W18 engines and the W16 Bugatti Veyron would never have existed.

The Mk4 '337' special edition GTI was the BEST looking GTI of all time, hands down! That car looked so perfect and so German, you could hear Deutschland's national anthem coming out of the exhaust when it drove by!

One thing Carwow needs to work on is capturing exhausts on camera. because all the cars sound terrible in the video, but having sold that generation R32. it is indeed one of the best sounding cars ever produced.

LOL, 5: 24. .. Matt steals the hit, gets a better launch, and drives away. .. I was dying laughing. This was fun to watch considering I came SO close to buying a brand new R32 in 2008.
reply

The R32 can do 13. 8 Seconds in the quarter mile, this probably depends very much on the surface, on the tyres, on their temperature and on the car conditions

Would love to see Yianni and Sam have an argument as neither one is ever wrong about anything, both are super bad losers also (no hate just a comment)
reply

We need a similar old vs new but old to have a nitrous party piece. The face on sam when matt hits it just before being passed. This would get so many likes.

Drove a VF Supercharged R32 back in 2005 and it was one of the most fun vehicles I have ever been in. Power was sooooo smooth and that thing moved!
reply

Now how about a drag race between the Mk4 1. 8T GTI vs the Mk4 24v VR6 GTI Settle the decades old argument once and for all for chrissakes!
reply

Moral of this video- what i have learned is that in order to win races you need to be the best driver, no matter what car you driving.

From the MK6 onwards the Golf just looks so average and dull. They didn't even bother making the Golf GTI or Golf R stand out. Yawn
reply

RESTECPa to the Mk4
could carwow make ALI G style drag race with hot hatches next time; )
I gave you 10 likes. thanks!

That R32 is 100% modded. They were dogshit slow. I have both cars and the mk7 gti was always faster in the 1/4 mile than my R32.
reply

geez, the mk7 just looks so good imo. It's got the right lines and curves right where they're needed. just a gorgeous car

I bought a new MklV R32 in 2002. I loved that car. Then I got married. Then I got divorced and bought an Audi S5 B8. 5
reply

Is that R32 some special VW creation! Never seen one with an auto box in it, didnt even know DCT boxes existed back then.
