The Carwow Black Friday sale is now live: This is the all-new MG3! MG3’s latest hatchback rolls up with a super cheap starting price of just 18, 000! The question is, if you’re looking for a budget car as your next set of wheels, should you consider it over other affordable options like the Dacia Duster For starters, let’s check out the design. On the outside, the MG3 is relatively smart. There is nothing too outlandish or unique about it, but it looks pretty appealing. There’s a large opening in the lower part of the front end, and along the side there are creases to give it some definition. There’s also a set of smart taillights at the back. It may not be that unique, but it’s certainly not offensive in any way. However, unlike the exterior, the interior is far more unique. Given the price it’s still fairly well built, with leatherette included across the dash and other cabin areas. There may be some scratchy plastic when you reach a bit lower, but it’s to be expected on a car that is so affordable. There’s an infotainment screen on the centre of the dash and some physical buttons, and the seats are pretty comfortable, too. When it comes to performance, there’s only one option available. It’s a 1. 5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine coupled with an electric motor. It’s not a conventional set-up, with the petrol engine largely used to power the motor. However, all you need to know is that it can produce 194hp, and hit 60mph in just 8 seconds. There are two trim levels to choose from, and the top-of-the-range car costs just 21, 000! So is it a must-buy Stick with Mat and see for yourself! A good old Suzuki Celerio (I rented one on a vacation to Crete) would actually do 65 mpg, no complex and heavy hybrid system and it cost half the price. It also drives like a big car and is very quiet. I have increasingly difficult seeing the point of these type of cars. It seems to me, that they only add weight and complexity to the cars, at a premium pricetag, and then it is actually worse in every way. No thanks to climate control in freaking app! Imagine going down the mountains of Crete wanting to adjust the temperatur a bit, while you try to drive fast enough for the locals not wanting to overtake you all the time: In that MG3 you would be at risk of crashing!

The bit about parts of the car looking like other cars was 1000% Chinese stereotyping/bias. You've gotta check yourself with that habit Matt, because this is far from the first time you've let your national setereotyping dictate your views and opinions of a vehicle's styling and handling. This was just a more blatant example of is because the editor did the work for us of comparing the parts of this car with the cars you mentioned in the video. Usually, we notice some contradiction you make about something with another recent review of a German car (for example) and have to go and find the contradicting claim ourselves.

why does matt think the hybrid system is complicated its not. and its not a good one either the 1. 5 Engine is from the old MG3 the electric motor is from the old ZS EV and 3 speed auto is just a standard torque converter unit from SAIC cars from 15 years ago. Plus reliability matt having problems with the gear selector is the least of the issues with the transmission There been a cases of it Either Refusing to go in drive or reverse and even total gearbox failure. Just a naff parts bin special

The 7 year warranty is a little misleading, things like the infotainment system are only covered for the first 3 years, engine, gearbox, suspension etc for 3 years, the only thing that seems to be covered from year 4 onwards is anti-perforation and the high voltage battery is actually covered for 8 years & 100k miles, so I wouldn’t be crowing about a 7 year warranty giving peace of mind for a brand that seems to be unreliable, when not much is actually covered after 3 years

I get so frustrated when the speed is shown digitally with those big numbers. It's so busy on your eyes and completely draining if you need to spend some time driving (except maybe if you can constantly use the cruise control, but that's not always possible. It makes me avoid looking at my speed altogether. I don't understand this trend. Why don't they make cars for real human people drivers anymore Can you change the display in this car Why are you not showing us that!

lets be honest if there was ever anything going for mg/rover over the last 30 years it was their power unit. well, except the K series kettle which all but ended rover. Even so - when working they have always been strong at their price bracket, flying around in a MG ZR160 at 17 and changing 2 head gaskets myself was my entry into a love of all things cars so i like that MG was saved, even if its all chinesium now, i think they are putting out alright motors for the money.

IMO this car is hideous from the front. What is up with all this transformer like Asian generic design with the weird lines Nearly all modern cars use it which make them all look alike and mediocre.
I am sure this car otherwise is a good little car, but what a crime to call it a MG. MG used to to be iconic with a sportive, classical and often beautiful design. This one is not.

# CarWow Hey Matt, you mentioned 2 more cars in this video- the Duster & a Peugeot. Why dont you do a comparison with these 3 & any other you find suitable in similar price bracket.
Also this MG3 is a family car, not a sports car, so stop criibbing about driving dynamics & review such cars as what they are meant to be OR JUST STOP REVIEWING BUDGET CARS

reply

I hate mg they are so hideous I would have a BMW one sires like the one you reviewed and it's better and nothing will be the good old ford fiesta mg are the top 10 worst cars
Go back to China and shut down all of the MG dealer ships and the same thing with byd
Thay are worse cars don't buy Chinese cars buy cheap and buy twice

reply

The whole idea starts with VW Twin Drive lol.
And then there's Honda i-mmd.
And then a lot of chinese brands kind of copied the idea as well. Including byd dm-i. But SAIC (MG's parent company) and Geely took the extra mile and put 3 planetary speeds in there so that the parallel mode can happen at lower speeds.

As if the Chinese needed any more financial ammunition to fund their socialist state
Buy an old car, keep it on the road. Learn how to look after it yourself, you’ll get way more satisfaction that buying one of these don’t worry about what the neighbours think.

Not that it really matters, but 0-62mph and 0-60mph is not that same thing so you can't compare 8. 0 seconds with 6. 7 seconds. Again, it will probably do 0-62mph (100km/h) in about 7 seconds but you should at least be accurate about it: )

With a 360-degree camera, sunroof, 10. 25-inch infotainment screen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, this car starts at 14800 pounds in Australia, fully taxed, or 15 824 pounds. You people in the UK are being taken advantage of.

One issue with this hybrid configuration shown on other videos/reviews is mountain driving: on downhills, once the battery is full (and it happens very quickly, like 4-5 hairpins in the Dolomites, there's no engine braking, at all.

Assuming these have long term durability better than candy floss in a monsoon I wonder if they will be popular first cars for the young racey types in a few years, I mean 0-60 in 6. 7 is about the same an EP3 Civic Type R.
reply

What were you expecting. 190 odd hp in things like GTis. type Rs you're gonna be in the 6 to 7s. when you said 8. I was like how heavy is it lol. That is power for a little car. Electric nonsense though. meh
reply

Ford dropped a real clanger when they didn't throw a quality hybrid lump (like Toyota's) in the Fiesta and Focus.
They threw all their eggs in the EV basket and now they'll struggle.

reply

8: 25 The fact that there is no reach adjustment for the steering wheel and that the rear seats don't split when folded is unacceptable on such a modern car. I would avoid the MG3 at any cost.
reply

It really does look crap and those miniscule 'shopping trolley' sized wheels make it look proportionaly ridiculous.
I wouldn't even pay HALF its price for such a crappy car.

reply

This is where we are with modern cars.
Absolute cheap unreliable tat for 20 grand that'll be worthless in 5 years.
Buy a second hand Golf and save some cash.
