The Volvo XC90 leads the Swedish firm-s foray into the premium SUV market. Its sharp looks, spacious and well-built interior and class-leading safety tech make it a tempting proposition, but is it a better bet than an Audi Q7 or a Mercedes GLE? Watch my in-depth video review to find out if this is the stylish high-riding family car for you or whether you-d be better off with one of its German rivals

Don't buy volvo!
Really bad service, since the company bought by Chainees the quality is terrible.
Here is my experience:
I bought last year Volvo XC90 from Volvo Selekt in Germany, a car 2 years old with 70, 000 km
According to volvo they run 120 tests on the car and give additional one year warranty through CarGarantie
In 8 month I have the car, following issues:
1. First week AC not cooling, need to refill Freon gas, not covered by warranty 300-
How they didn't find it n 120 tests. Don't know
2. After a month turbo pipe explode, I'm stuck and need to tow the car.
Again warranty not cover pipes and hoses. 600 -
3. Now check engine light, DPF ( diesel particular) gone and the car is smoking black
Again warranty not cover, why? Have no idea
1500 -!
Never buy Volvo!

It's tried, driven across England and returned in this car, the top model.
It's simply the worst junk, everything is old-fashioned, the adaptive speed pilot is choppy, the driving is choppy and the lane assistant is simply so poor that it shouldn't be activated.
The gearbox in no way gives a smooth ride and so there is no power in the driveline. The feeling is that you drive with the handbrake applied. In such an expensive car you have to say total dump character.
We have a Suzuki Vitara with 140 hp petrol engine, automatic transmission and adaptive speed pilot in the company. It runs far better, more comfortable and much smoother, but at 1/3 of the price.
The Volvo XC90 is simply a joke, built to impress Chinese, but Volvo is also Chinese owned.

Just have one on loan. The wires in the heated screen are too prominent. once you notice them you keep noticing them. It's like looking through gauze. partic when faced with oncoming headlights. The image in the door mirrors is just odd. has weird distortion and picks up reflections from the silver trim of the air vents in the dash. Feels good to drive though. Refined and smooth. a terrific cruiser for longer journeys. .better than my much older SD4 Freelander which ain't bad but does roll about more and is not as quiet nor refined. Things have moved on. Great sound system. For a big car it feels easy to place in tight manoeuvres. it's only when you're looking for a parking space or reversing are you aware of it's size. It handles like a smaller car.

Great review.
I wonder if somebody owning this car can tell me, can I get it in a garage with entrance door width 230cm (car width 214cm) and clearance in front of the garage door 560cm (car length 495. 3cm. Given the width of the door, there will be only 8cm clearance on each side, if coming in perfectly straight, but it will be difficult to come perfectly straight, given there is only about 64cm more space in front of the garage than the car length itself.

Hello, I have XC90 too. Mat (not Mat Fraser) you-re graceful review made made me buy this vehicle. In black. I drive country miles (kilometres) and I also drive up hills. My daughter, Hayley, is disabled so she fits in the back like a Tetris block.
I sell real estate and often eat snacks so plenty of cubby holes for my curly wurly-s. the centre console doesn-t wobble.
Thanks Mat!

The US and Canada get a capacitive-touch climate control thing for the rear seats where the little storage cube at the very back of the centre console is located. Meaning we basically have quad-zone climate control as standard, controlled by touchscreens for both rows.

We need more isofix points in 7 seater cars! For now only the Audi Q7 has isofix points on every seat (except for the drivers seat of course. Rules for carrying children are getting tighter with the years. Even booster seats for kids aged 3+ have isofix nowadays.

Probably the best looking luxury SUV out there. Very clean and minimalistic. The Lexus/Acura SUVs look ridiculous with too many sharp edges, the BMW front is just hideous, Mercedes looks outdated. The Audi isn-t that bad but Volvo has a tad better interior.

Thanks Mat for great reviews. Regarding the handsfree tailgait opening, you cannot stand too close or you have to take a step back to open the tailgate. It is so that the it does not hit anything when opening: - )
