Do you ever find it hard to meet the fuel economy figures quoted by your car manufacturer? You-re not the only one! That-s why changes are being introduced to review how fuel economy and emissions are calculated. Want to find out what exactly-s going on? Watch my latest video to find out how the tests will be more realistic, what effect it may have on car tax, and (more importantly) how it could help save you money!

Why can't the car companies just make the cars more efficient when it come to MPG?
They KNOW how to do this with very little effort, and I know this because of the 1973 Shell Oil Mileage Marathon (Here's one of the cars that was in the race that managed 376 miles per gallon --. Can anyone with any knowledge around engines tell me WHY these tricks that this car had could not be implemented into a modern car of today?
That car weighing in at 2500 pounds could achieve that kind of mileage with only 1 gallon of fuel?
If you look at the video he explains some of the tricks by one of them is heating the fuel up to a certain degrees and insulating the tank which keeps the fuel warm and easily makes it vaporize before entering the chamber for ignition, which means that the droplets nozzle used today is just that, a VERY inefficient way of using the fuel and they KNOW IT!
All explosive effect engines work with gas which should tell you something.

My experience with several different cars and makes Mini Cooper S, Volvo V60, Porsche 981 S are some examples: one can actually match and in some cases beat the stated mpg if one tries to. Instead if one drives like there is no world tomorrow or without any insight / planing then one does not have the right to expect miracles. Miracles are not to be expected if measures are made whilst the engine is cold, on very short runs or spending more time like a dead duck sat on traffic than actually driving for example and as well. This massive fuss that most and in particular the press have done throughout the years has never been a problem to me.

I can easily beat my 2007 BMWs MPG. it is listed at 29 mpg highway and I get 32 going 70-80. cruising mostly. City I cannot match it though. On AVERAGE I get 30 highway because I prefer to hold 80 and I get 14 city. 2007 530i btw. my record is 36 mpg highway with good drafting going mostly 70, though this was a one way trip. so maybe more down hill than up? I am not sure. alabama to georgia, reset mpg as I left to include acceleration. I have the wider less aero sport wheels and damaged aero. not bad with 150, 000 miles. My city is trash, even though my vacuum leak is fixed I just can't match BMWs 21 mpg city

Serioussly? Fuel efficency numbers are not tested with the engine out ot the cars. Its made with the hole car on a rolling road dyno.
If if would be done out of the car the numbers would be completly useless. For example, some engines are fitted to very different cars. for Ex Volvos 5cyl engine. Its fitted to the C30 and also the XC90. Those cars do not get anywhere near the same milage. For obvious reasons. If the test was done on the enginge out of the cars, the numbers would be the same for both cars, which they ofcourse are not.

The extra urban figure from the old system was at an average speed of 47mph not 70mph like most people do on the motorway. This actually makes a massive difference to mpg for cars of normal size engines but for cars of large engines with no consideration for mpg it makes very little difference. For example independent tests on a Mercedes 450SEL 6. 9L did 22mpg at 30mph and 19mpg at 70mph. My personal car with a 1. 5l uses twice the fuel at 70mph vs 30mph.

economy calculations being re-evaluated to shift lower co2 bracketed vehicles into a higher paying taxation band, marketed to the consumer as a benefit of 'more realistic' mpg. the actual agenda; screwing motorists for more money for an environmental issue that humans contribute the least amount to. animals and bacteria 150 gigatons of co2 pa, humans barely 6 gigatons and the global industry annual contribution dwarfed by one single volcanic eruption.

NEDC cycles are not done with the engine out of the car! It is done with the car on a rolling road with a robot driving! If it was tested with the engine out of the car, every car within the same brand with the same engine would have the same advertised fuel economy, regardless of transmission and all wheel drive systems. For example an economy model like an audi a1 would have the same economy as a heavy a6 with the same 1. 8L 190hp engine.

It really REALLY frustrated me when you reviewed the very car I purchased (Kia Sportage 2017) and it's slow, slow, and very very thirsty.
I struggle to get any more than 30. 7MPG (My average over 28, 000 miles, and half and half on motorways and country roads. Trying my hardest to bring that figure up- seems impossible.
I thought I was going to save money with my Sportage against my 1998 BMW 728i, however- I was very mistaken.

Well, for my current 2017 car, Nissan tells me it should average about 5. 1l/100km, the on-board computer tells me 5. 3 while the stats in my fuel app tell me it's 5. 5. That's not too bad if you ask me. It's not that the figures are that unrealistic. It's that most people don't know how to drive in an economical way. And yes, I could save even more if I wanted to. But I don't like to drive slow or accelerate like if I'm 80.

The only real way to improve fuel economy is primarily; make the vehicle lighter, or, make the engine smaller and less powerful. However most new cars are not made to have low power or small engines(they don't sell, and most new cars are ridiculously heavy. I highly doubt all the fuel economy estimates, I have a friend who has a new lexus is and it gets average 20mpg when It was rated at 22 city 32 highway.
