Go to and use promo code SPEED to get 25 off your first trip. Its the boxy American sedan that was driven by RoboCop, Conan OBrien and also your uncle. It hauled all the groceries and saved Ford in the 1980s. Over 7, 500, 000 of them were sold in 34 years of production Join James as he explores the history of the Ford Taurus Thumbnail Photo: BoostedAmerica

Bought a gold 2000 Taurus Wagon around 2008 when I worked for the US Postal Service. I didn't get an LLV and needed something with a bench seat so I could sit in the middle, drive with my left hand/foot and put mail out the right. It rode amazing with grand touring tires, was quiet, reasonable on gas, and served me faithfully. Some of these cars had garbage transmissions; I had to replace a few sensors but it was cheap and easy to work on. I left the USPS and sold the car to some neighbors who gifted it to their granddaughter. It survived two teenage girls learning to drive and college; I saw it around town until I moved away and it had zero rust and the paint was still glossy. The horrid jelly bean design of the 3rd gen permanently gave Accord and Camry the mid-sized sedan segment despite 4th and 5th gens being very good cars.

Me being in Europe, I owned 2 Taurus(es): ) One was 1986 with 2. 5 engine with manual transmission The other one was 1996 3. 0 with (alleged) 200Hp. I used to have fun with both cars, but troubles as well. In 2007 I was driving the 1996 model in Hamburg - Germany; suddenly the engine shut down in the middle of the tunnel under the Elbe river. There are 2 tubes (2 separate tunnels with 2 lanes each) in one direction. They had to close one of the tubes because of my Taurus died. 3 Firefight vehicles came to rescue me: ) Fortunately I did not pay anything - it went from my insurance. 2 days later I got it towed to garage. It was fuel pump or something, so no big deal: )

So my Taurus - its a 2002, bought it with 125K miles on it. Since Ive bought it - had to get a new starter, had to replace the AC compressor, had to fix the suspension, had to replace the belt on it. And yes, had to get a new fuel pump as well. Also, had to get new coil packs installed, and it needs a valve job. Except the local auto place would charge 1500 dollars for it. The car was bought for 2500 dollars and including the money spend to fix it - 7, 000 dollars has been dropped on that car to buy it and fix it. Needless to say, when I get a new car - a Taurus will not be high on the list.

I miss my 96 SHO. Absolutely fantastic car to drive once you get used to the crazy fwd torque steer. I do not miss blowing the transmission twice. once at 25, 000 under warranty and a second time at 60, 000 no longer covered. The car was faster than my neighbors 93 mustang GT with open exhaust

The Taurus will be back. I almost bought the latest gen version, but they gotta go back and work on pricing. They need to build a cheap sedan with ridiculous power like Dodge is doing, with reasonable interior. Nobody wants a 40, 0000 Taurus, even if it has a 300+ herspooers.

So wait. Does that mean they're not making the police interceptor variants anymore either? It seems like every police department in my state JUST switched their fleets to that like 2 years ago. Looks like they'll all be going back to the chargers in a few years

Me and my brother used to play a game called the car game on long car rides where we would have a tournament of which car type we saw most. It was always the Taurus that came out on top, except for a few years where the Camry Accord or Carolla beat it

One of first cars I had was a 1998 Taurus SHO until someone T-boned me, but happily replaced that car with a 1999 Ford contour SVT. Shoulda kept the SHO motor and done a swap. But the SVT 2. 5 v6 was a little steamer back in the day. Miss those days.

Currently driving a '98 that I got for a grand a year and a half ago, not an awful car and I for sure got my money's worth but I can talk the transmission is starting to go out and it's only at 150k miles, which is why I'm usually a fan of Japanese cars

I don't like it when the letters in SHO aren't said individually. Also, I'd argue the third gen Chevy Cavalier as the most 90s looking vehicle. It literally took a little bit of everything, from everything. And it was hideous.
