I agree this IS a weird sedan, and shoot, I even think the new Camry TRD is also a bit weird. Something about large comfortable cruisers typically bought by families, donning a sport tracksuit and athletic sneakers, IS a bit. off. Then again, its also not entirely surprising to me since these days, it seems the only way automakers could ever sell sedans still is if they include some sort of gimmick. Offering JUST a sedan is no longer enough. Example being the redesigned VW Passat. I actually think the redesign looks good and even a bit modern and Audi-esque, but the problem is, theres nothing more to it than just being a comfortable family sedan.

I think toyota knows better. This car will sell well. They know the market better thsn us, thats why they are no. 1. There are many people in 40s and 50s who want a reliable and practical car. And when they see this, they wont hesitate to pay the extra money. Avelons customers are old because they look for a big, practical and reliable car. Not because they look for an avelon. But if this car looks cool, youger people would buy if too. Who wouldnt want a cool looking, practical and reliable toyota? 300 hp are enough for most of the people. If it had more than 300 hp, fuel consumption would be higher.

Another thing (to add on to what Doug was saying, is that you can get a SLIGHTLY smaller version called the Camry TRD for 10k less. The Camry TRD is (afaik) still built on the same platform as the Avalon. The Avalon just uses more sheet metal, but theyre basically the same car. But the Camry is sells way more and its smaller, so its a lot cheaper. And since its lighter, its faster (0-60 in 5. 6 seconds vs 0-60 in 6. 1 seconds. Apparently fuel economy is the same. But yeah, if you want a big sporty 4 door Toyota and dont have money to burn, get the coniderably cheaper and faster Camry TRD.

My dad just bought a black Avalon TRD and he had been looking at other old man cars and then I showed him the TRD. Its great for guys like my dad who dont want to spend the money on a BMW M car or a Lexus F car but want something a little different than everything else and something you can have some fun with.

My grandfather owned the first gen Avalon and it was his daily driver for over twenty years. A couple months ago our family decided to get him a new one: this exact Avalon TRD. He wears snapback hats and was a pilot in his heyday. I think thats the target demographic for this car.

Why, oh why, couldn't Toyota have gone with the name Toyota Racing Machines when they decided to market higher performance versions of their (very reliable) vehicles? The acronym TRiM would sound so much better than the choice actually made.

Toyota have been doing this over the years with their TRD models fooling people's with by sticking add on plastic bits. Basically what Toyota are doing is kitting it up and want You to modify the engine and you loose your warranty.

As a Toyota lover I feel rejected. This is a family sedan, why would you make it look as a rocket? You are building a ultimate german cars ass kicking TRD machine but you missed to build a proper Toyota Supra
