Yet another GM blunder. Holden will fail in the next few years because of one head office screw up after another. Holden was their best performing brand for some time in the 00s. There remains much affection for US cars in Oz but their sales have plummeted due to poor design, build quality and customer service. Holden was the best selling brand for like a decade. Now it's Toyota by a mile with Holden barely in the top 10. All while taking billions in government subsidies. Those utes remain a good idea but GM never got with the program on fuel efficiency.

Gotta laugh at the level of knowledge in this video. It's a bloody Commodore ute - common as dirt in Australia. And as for the conversion where a Commodore ute body is fitted with your all American Pontiac G8 - hate to tell you this, but the Pontiac G8 is also a Holden Commodore, as is any Pontiac GTO from about 2005 onwards - made in Australia at the Holden factory, and has a few mods from a base Commodore to make it suitable for export to the US. The Chevy SS and Chevy Caprice are also all Commodores.

Doug, your ignorance of Australian cars all the time is cringe worthy. We invented the Ute in the 30s btw. The fact that car was built over the G8 Pontiac was to make it an easy left hand conversion. AGAIN the G8 is an Australian Monaro & therefore not half & half but a full Aussie car. As we have a history as long as the US in making cars I guess its about time you did some better Aussie research. Maybe you can do a show about the history or the UTE. Still like your show mate OK.

Here is Australia, there are only two types of people who use this car. The guy who uses it for work and hauling stuff around and those guys who use it as a performance racer (IF we are talking about the SS of course, cause this car also comes with a V6 model) The funny thing is, I never really knew Americans adored this car so much. It would seem that I am taking the Holden Ute for granted.

Again, the later Pontiac GTO is a Holden Monaro rebadged to appease American egos. This certainly isn't the case with all Americans of course but it is with so many of them and it is so glaringly obvious when they travel abroad and are surprised to find that the rest of the world are not all unsophisticated cave dwelling Neanderthals still rubbing sticks together to make fire.

I recall when Pontiac was considering manufacturing a version of it here. They even showed mock ups of the Pontiac version, with a Pontiac grill (not good -- UTE looked better. I think they decided against it due to US crash testing requirements and modifications they'd need to do. And I think the Holden UTE is a version of the Holden Monaro, which was similar to the Pontiac GTO.

This was scheduled to be a Pontiac. They had a contest to name it. Then GM killed Pontiac and didn't switch it over to Chevrolet or any other brand. This is a Pontiac G8. The motor and other parts are the same. Just the body style was different. The relative to this now is the Chevy SS. It comes from Holden in Australia.

They are useless because they have car suspensions and you can't haul or tow anything very heavy. It's basically a car without a back seat that doesn't haul much. You can't even get a full sheet of plywood in the back. That is the bare minimum test for a useful utility vehicle.

I loved the El Camino. I would totally buy one of these. We got the Holden Commodore in the form of the Chevy SS. Why not this one? The US gets all the bum deals on vehicles. Even the American Civic Type R isn't as cool as the foreign market versions.
