Here's Why the Chevy SS Was a Total Failure

The Chevrolet SS looked great on paper -- but it was a total flop. Today I'm reviewing the Chevy SS to see why the Chevy SS was a failure, and whether the SS is worth a look. Skippy: Marketed incorrectly. Australians knew what it was meant to be. Very much the type of car Australians overall prefer. A BMW5 at an affordable price. It should not have been sold under the Chevy name. That meant it was compared to USA Muscle Cars. Good performance in a straight line but with very little European refinement in the suspension area and other areas. They should have used the Holden Commodore name with the Roaring Lion on the front in gold or marketed it under a one off name as a GM product. A GM Luxury Sedan. It was designed as a Touring Car. Great for long trips with a lot of grunt if that is what appeals. Refined handling and comfort. Durable and lasting. Mechanically easy to maintain and cheap to service. TheIf it had sold in greater volume the price could have been lower. Economy of scale would help reduce the cost. That may have been the problem. It could have taken sales away from GM products produced in the USA.

The reverse lights coming on on key press is actually a very good idea. Have you ever tried to walk around the back of a car with smoked out tails in the dark? Pretty hard to see anything well. Reverse lights are white and illuminate better, plus all the other marker lights and the headlights come on as well, illuminating the entire outside edge of the vehicle. As a side note, the settings in the 'infotainment' screen should allow you to select how long the exterior lights stay on after a key press of the fob (default should be 30 seconds. Also, the fact that its loaded with features shouldn't be a surprise given that the Holden Commodore its based is a luxury vehicle in Australia.

I consider myself a car enthusiast. My only exposure to one of these was in a parking lot, where my eyes saw a Malibu, but my ears heard an LS engine. The name didn't stick in my head, and I didn't know it came with a manual transmission, so I forgot about it. In 2018, I bought a brand new Camaro 1SS, then a few months later, I found out that the SS did have a manual transmission. Had I known, I would have bought the SS, rather than the Camaro. They should have called it a Chevelle, or a Malibu SS. At one point down the road, I WILL own one of these cars.

In Europe, BMWs have a very long (and expensive) list of options. I wish they were loaded up, but they really arent. Also magnetic suspensions are wonderful to give you a very comfortable ride if they have been set up correctly. giving you a performance set up whilst absorbing potholes, cobblestones like a limo. the best exemple I know is the Mc Laren MP4C. a sports car that really cares for your back.

Ugly design for the price. Ugly design for the class. Why would you buy that stretched Malibu looking thing when you could get a pony car. If you need a 4 door the charger offers superior hp and luxury options. At least charger vents arent fake. I just bought a new challenger. Wouldnt have considered a chevy ss even for a moment. Even if it was the deal of a lifetime.

Let's be honest. the Dodge Charger, and poor advertising from Chevrolet killed the SS. The Charger can be had with 3 different V8s, and the SRT392 Hemi cost the same as a SS. .and has a lot more horsepower. My local lot only had 4 Chevrolet SS's on the lot, the entire lifespan of the car. Plus. it's kinda boring looking. But? Some people like that. shrugs

There are too many competitors at this price point. Why didn't Chevy make the model stand out by calling it something different, like how Hyundai brought in the Genesis. The SS could have been called The Omega, with a different emblem. And then heavily advertise the car (not forgetting to take the Chevy emblem off of the back.

I also felt that the SS was not a big seller. My opinion was that the reason was due to its very high price. So you spend that much and you think Corvette or Camaro SS. Nice car though. I purchased the 2018 Camaro RS myself. Good price, good options, and a great price. It also sounds fantastic. I enjoyed your video Doug DeMuro.

If I would want BMW, I would buy one. Not US lookalike with fake vents. Though I have to say, that BMW likely discontinued SS model some 75 years ago. But seriously - I don't like the styling. It imitates BMW (that's not so bad, but those fake vents make it look cheap and not cool.
