Being an STi owner, I can obviously appreciate this new car. But there's something extremely cringy about the fact it's a Corolla. I know it's just a name, but I would have been way more excited to buy one if it was a Celica GT4 or something like that with more heritage attached to it. The name Corolla has always been associated with such a granny level of boredom and such a pure absence of enthusiasm that it feels extremely weird to see a GR Corolla. Anyway it's just the name, I know, but I think Toyota missed an incredible opportunity to revive a legend with an heritage if they wanted to fill a part of the immense void Subaru left with their decision to axe the STi in March.

Doug, this IS the new STI. I could totally see a condition of Toyota giving Subaru the Solterra being Subaru had to drop the STI. Subaru is deeper and deeper in bed with Toyota these days, and they desperately needed an EV in their lineup given their typical market segment and target audience, plus they need to meet efficiency standards. If I was Subaru, it would be a pretty easy choice to give up a niche enthusiast vehicle to Toyota in return for a turnkey EV.
Obviously the Corolla doesn't borrow a Subaru boxer or symmetrical AWD, but the STI ethos is very obvious in the GR Corolla, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if STI had some hand in the development of it.

Unfortunately 300hp is not particularly exciting in this country, and that's even more true for a 3-cylinder with limited modification potential. The Golf R is a much more mod-friendly car, and honestly they should have brought it as a 4-cylinder rather than a strung-out 3-cylinder. Remember that this is a country where the Subaru WRX failed miserably and the Golf R has just been chugging along.

Doug seems like ya forgot about the Veloster N offered in both automatic and manual. The car that gave the civic type R a run for it s money. Looking forward to this all wheel drive car and May consider trading up. But for now my 2022 Veloster N manual is a blast. Keep up good reviews. Love you and Raitis Rides.

Had I been in a better financial position when the dealership lists became available I totally would have applied. I am so happy we get another enthusiast hot hatch. I wish there were more options but hey, if anyone is going to keep it around I am happy its Toyota.

This car is really impressive, and I love Toyota for doing it. 100hp per cylinder, GR handling, decent practicality, and unbeatable reliability. (edit: also an AWD Corolla) Can't wait for the scumbag dealers to mark this up 150%, and price out many enthusiasts.

Not a single mention of why and how these cars came to market. We could have had these a long time ago and others like the focus rs. If only North America were bigger WRC fans we could've had tons of different cars that were only released overseas

Seems like they copied a similar car, the WRX. Which I believe was very smart for Toyota to do. Especially since the STI is gone until it's transformed to an E-car. And the 2022 WRX isn't getting great reviews, also it doesn't have a hatch version.

It's insane to think that BMW and Toyota just switched character and personality! BMW became the most tasteless bizarre boring brand and Toyota is heading to become one of the most fun and exciting car manufacturers out there!
