Hi Scotty, Are 2012 mini cooper s clubman vehicles good/reliable? My mom owned it and put 3, 000 miles on it and kept in garage for 3 years. Then she gave it to me for school and it now has 51, 600 miles on it so far. I accelerate softly (no 0-60 runs ever, change full synthetic oil my self every 10, 000 miles or once a year which ever comes first. No mechanical problems yet. Changed battery once so far but noticed it taking longer to start so I took it to an Interstate Batteries and their machine showed it was not putting out 550 crank amps so I will be replacing the battery soon. Should I be looking for a new/used car that is more reliable? Should i be prepared for an expensive fix soon? Thank you for your videos I used your car battery video to see how to tell the age of a battery before I buy one: )I know the vehicle is old, has some miles, but the AC runs in the summer, heated seats are nice in winter, but I just cant afford an expensive repair so that is why if you recommend something, I will look into it. I am in Arizona btw. Thanks

Good to know that the Foresters are only made in Japan. My lady friend has a real old one she got after having an older Nissan Pathfinder that lasted a long time. Her Forester is up there in mileage, but it still looks decent and is still holding up. I rented a 2019 Forester in July. I believe it was a base model, but it was almost new, very low mileage. I didn't get to enjoy it much be cause I used it to move house, but I really liked it, and thought it have quite enough power. I wouldn't mind having one just like that, with the optional alloy wheels, though the Sport is much nicer, albeit more expensive. I will probably get the new Honda Civic Sport Sedan non turbo 2. 0L, possibly with the 6 Speed, if I can find one, though I believe the CVT in the Civic it pretty reliable if you don't abuse it, which I don't, though I know the 6 Speed lasts a lot longer.

A few things: -Foresters have only come in 4 cylinder and 4 cylinder turbos, no six cylinders except Outbacks and Legacy. -Head gaskets are still an issue in those models since they are belt engines. If it is around 120k it's gonna need head gaskets or they have already been done. -Subaru is not known for crap auto transmissions. Ive barely had to touch E4AT and E5AT transmissions. The CVTs on the other hand, absolute garbage. -I drive a 2000 Forester with 252k miles as a commuter car I picked up from work for 700. Put about 800 in suspension, timing belt, hoses, and brakes. Everything works, it has a small leak from the oil separator plate behind the flex plate but not bad enough to pull the engine yet. Just waiting on the head gaskets to start leaking again.

My Subarus 4eat transmission says different. 302k on the original trans and still shifts like butter. Ive never seen a 5 or 4 speed automatic prematurely worn out. And I sometimes I drive fast on the freeway. The original engine had had to be swapped because my dumb azz ran it low on oil and it destroyed the engine. The second motor I put in I built myself and I put forged pistons, rods, cams, and updated head gasket to make it bulletproof. Since then I had no issues and I was able to bump up the hp from 165 to 180.

We have a 2010 Forester and a 2012 Impreza, purchased lightly used and new, respectively, and because they were manufactured in Japan. The Forester is starting to show signs of early head gasket issues and, of course, the Impreza has that asinine valve spring problem that I refuse to have butchered by dealership mechanics working as fast as they can. While Subarus are useful here in the northeast, they are problem prone and a royal PITA, even for a halfway decent weekend shadetree mechanic like yours truly, to work on.

While most Imprezas are made in the Indiana, the WRX is made in Japan. I don't think it's just abuse that kills them. In fact, the head gasket issue you mentioned is less prone to happen in the turbo models. As for the Forester; It's just an Impreza. That one has an EJ25, and those are still prone to headgasket failure. Newer models have the FA engine, which doesn't seem to have that issue. My brother is a Subaru tech. Foresters are as bad as the others. Japanese or US made, that's the nature of the EJ25 engine.

A balanced and insightful report, much appreciated. When I got my 2017 Forester 4 cylinder a then co-worker chastised me for not getting her Outback with a 6 cylinder made in Indiana. I was even irritated/surprised mine was all Japan made. Since then I hear about hi-torque CVT's failing on these 6 bangers repeatedly. I already have 63000 brutal New York state commute miles on mine, incredibly reliable, no complaints, because I stay away from that 6000 RPM redline and change my oil Right on advice Scotty

Yup, Subarus JDM engines were great. The USDM engines are the ones that have so many problems. And this goes for pretty much all Subarus, even the infamous STis. Kind of sad Americans get shafted like this. Im guessing the unions wont let companies import engines anymore. Either that or they build usdm engines on the cheap. Theres no other explanation for a Japanese company to ruin their reputation like this by selling substandard cars abroad when they make good cars where theyre at.

Modern Subaru's are garbage. Old ones have crap interior but for the money there pretty dam quick and fun. Only japan got the good stuff through. Ej20k and EJ207 are great redline at 8k with 300hp. Ive Imported countless 90's wrx sti's and not one has ever broken down on me not even in the -40 winters I get in western Canada. People just drive the piss out of them so that s how things break. But its extremely hard not to as the cars almost want to be driven hard.
