Jeez, I'm not sure that I would agree, but I'm not Mr. Kilmer, either. He says I would rather buy a part made in China than one made in Mexico. Personally, for all MY CARS, I buy OEM unless I know something is better. For instance, I just bought a Aisin water pump for my 2003 Honda Accord, which everybody says is a piece of junk because of its transmission. 190, 000 miles still runs and drives better than new. Of course, I am religious about changing ALL fluids to synthetic, if they weren't that way already. However, it is just amazing, and sickening, that the USA put up the Buick Century to compete with the Honda Accord in 2003. I'm a registered professional engineer in addition to a part-time auto mechanic, but it only takes a layperson to look at the difference between Honda quality and Buick quality back then. The Honda is so much better. My Honda was made in the USA, and my Buick was made in Canada. I've worked on several GM cars made in Mexico. Personally, I think there are three issues here: (1) is engineering. (2) is the quality of parts outsourced and (3) is the QA/QC of the plant that put together the car. Wonder what Scotty thinks about Canadian plants?

I bought a 2007 Elantra in 2008, 120, 400 miles later not a single problem. I got it for 12K as a cert preowned with actual unlimited lifetime warranty from the giant dealer in a big town( they have since stopped unlimited time ) I have owned it 12 years not a single breakdown. I do my own maintenance and use Synthetic oil every year or so not to exceed 5k miles. ( I drive very little now ) A same year Toyota/Honda was 5K higher when I got the Elantra. Sorry, that is only a 2K difference in value now, I got 3K in the end by getting the Elantra. 2007 was a redesign so I wouldn't get a 2006 or older. I tow a trailer as well, max towing is 1500 lbs. I get 36mpg and I drive quickly. It also handles like a go cart. I wouldn't get the lower models but the Elantra and Sonata are really good since 2007. They are not as good as a Toyota but also cost much less.

Scotty, Im 20 years old and I have an 05 hyundai sonata with 103, 000 miles. Just recently it started to get jerky, hesitant shifts that would occasionally slip. i did a drain and fill with the correct ATF fluid, shifted much smoother for the next 150-200 miles until one morning on an 18 degree day i started up my car and the trans locked up after putting it in drive, couldnt move anywhere until all of a sudden it jerked and rolled slowly, I then stopped the car, warmed it up and then it drove fine after 5-10 minutes. I checked underneath and noticed a small leak even after i replaced the drain plug gasket. Could the filter be clogged or is the transmission internally damaged? please respond.

Scotty, I'm no longer allowed to go to junk yards. I get lost wandering through acres of cars and trucks. Each one has a history, a story behind it. The old '72 IH PU with a smashed cab top and a faded door sign that says Fletcher's Tree Service. The 80s Dodge Colt that has a ladies garter and two pine tree air fresheners hanging from the mirror. The six banger Chevy Nova that's been T-boned right below a ZZ Top sticker. Family can't understand that there is a whole cosmology sitting among the weeds and gravel. Oh the fine line between Nobel Prize and a straightjacket.

Scotty, why do you think so many car companies can get away with selling poorly built vehicles with parts that break down? Why doesn't Toyota build crap the same as most other companies do in order to capitalize on the international standard of crap? I know you've answered this sort of question through the short comments you've made in your videos, but have you ever thought of sharing an in-depth analysis of what makes some companies strive to make great, reliable vehicles and others to make crap?

My dad had a Fiat as his first car in the late 70s or early 80s, one of those. He never brought up how good or bad it was but from what I know he didn't have it long, but that thing did teach him how to drive a manual. He would go to the steepest hill he could find without driving ridiculous amounts, and park in the middle of it half way up. Then practice letting out the clutch to accelerate up the hill from a stop. Honestly, that strain is probably why the thing died. LOL

Scotty, I had a 1994 Ford Ranger with the 4 cylinder and I wouldn't recommend it. It has less power and worse gas mileage than the 6 cylinder. Then latest 4 cylinders have more power, but I would still prefer the 6 cylinder engine. It had the 5 speed manual which is pretty good. The main problem with them is the poor quality of the fuel level sensor. Real pain, and I never replaced it.

Hey Scotty, what do you think of the 2016 Scion iA? It was made in Mexico I got it used w/ 13, 500 and I have 15, 800 on it now. No issues currently, but I read lots of complaints on the internet about the transmission breaking down. Should I sell this at a loss of several thousand dollars before it value plummets even more from a dead transmission? I just bought it 4 months ago

I know you don't recommend Kia, for good reason. However, I have a friend with a Kia Rio. It is six years old, looks new. Runs and starts great, in our cold climate. However, it burns a quart of oil every 500 miles. I find that particularly troubling Short of getting a new car is there anything he can try? He previously owned a very old carolla and loved it.
