Why Not to Buy a Salvage Car chaseman94: Scotty you speak the truth. I was unfortunate enough to make a 3000 mistake back in July 2016 when I bought this 2007 Honda Accord with 91k miles from this lady in Houston from this app 5 miles. She had it advertised as a clean title car I go check it out I test drove it only issue I saw at the time was it needed a rear passenger side wheel bearing the hood was a different shade of gray, one small section of the leather in the back seat was torn, rear passenger door wouldnt open from the inside and I thought those are an easy fix so like a fool I bought the car because I was desperate to get out of a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire which wasnt the right car for me despite it being super reliable with only 3 minor issues (ignition switch, cooling fans, and gear shift cable) costing me maybe 600 total. The Accord on the other hand was far worse from the time I bought up until I sold it in June 2018 the front drivers seat at the upper portion was bent on one side like someone put all their weight on it, it leaks into the back seat when it rains on the passenger side, the trunk has to be held open with a stick or else itll come down on you like a guillotine, and I have spent a whopping 2650 in repairs including having to replace the windshield after one morning on my way to work the Hood randomly flew open and smashed the windshield while I was driving to work on Highway 59 luckily it was early in the morning so there was no traffic around me. It scared the Living Daylights out of me and at that point I just said screw this car because it also needed repairs that would have cost me even more than what I had originally paid for the car plus what Ive spent so far on various repairs. I ended up selling it to a gentleman from Baytown for 1, 500 that probably just uses it as a knock around daily driver. I let him know upfront it was a salvage title vehicle and what repairs I have done to it so far. I was originally trying to get 2, 000 for it but I didnt care I just wanted it out of my life. While I had this Honda Accord at first I was mad at the lady who I bought it from but Im I was really mad at myself for not buying this 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis I was interested in or I should have just been better off waiting a little while longer until the right car came along. Lesson learned. Thank goodness I have a 2003 F-150 that Im driving now that I share between me, my mom, and my younger brother. I gave my son the Sunfire for his first car which he ended up wrecking 8 months later. I sold the remains to a scrap yard for 106.

Scotty, can not agree with your acessment on ins. Co. Had a friend with a mint 2003 Avalanche ( fully loaded) took to a ( known mechanic) for a oil leak on the valve covers. The garage caught the tops the 5. 3 engine on fire. then hit it with a fire extinguisher. The garage ins. Co. Would not do anything to cover damage either would the owner. My friends ins. Co. Totaled it because a new engine would cost 4500 to replace it. He bought it back paid for a new engine and had it installed. After paying ins. On the vehicle for all those years the ins. Co told him they wanted 3000 to buy his own vehicle back even though the did not spend any money on it. They claimed that because he called them about what happened they said he made an insurance claim and they now own it even though my friend held a free and clear title to it This still has me mad Nothing but legal Government mandated THIVES Anyone reading this drop your ins. To bare minimum when the automobile is 6 years old. The ins co. will total it. Not worth repairing them. Thats what they will tell you. Crooks all of the ins. Co. Oh, ya I almost forgot to tell you that you lost 5000 as soon as tou signed the purchase agreement on your new car.

I bought a 1999 Toyota 4Runner like 4 years ago and it has a salvage title. I literally never could figure out why the insurance company wrote it off as a salvage title after research, but it runs perfectly fine. When I bought it had 99, 000+ miles on it. I dont drive it very often, but its been a solid vehicle. Ive driven it back and forth to Tennessee a couple times from Dallas tx and never had a problem with it. I put almost 40, 000 miles in the last 4+ years which is really nothing considering that the average driver here in DFW does minimum of 2, 000 per month, and the only thing I ever replaced on it was the radiator which was OEM, and a battery, breaks you know the usual wear and tear. I think insurance companies today are really Petty. They will literally do anything to get out of paying for anything so nine times Outta ten probably Salvage it over running over a raccoon. maybe I was lucky, but we should always do a research when it comes to salvage vehicles. I got a pretty decent price on it, so I really couldnt complain.

My dearly beloved 93 Chevy 350 (pickmeup) got rear-ended by a rich guys Maserati. It was on loan to my son. The impact pretzeled the rear bumper and folded the fender up onto the tire. I literally yanked out the fender by hand and drove it home. After a lot of back and forth with the insurance company, they totaled it and I got a check for 3500, they got 500 back for the salvage value. After about three months and the vigorous application of logging chains, telephone poles and a REALLY husky hammer, I got things pretty straightened out. Then came the CA DMV. Well lemme tell ya, bringing a vehicle up from totaled to a Salvage Title is a novel in itself. All told, the tools and parts and Bondo and rattle cans came to about a grand. Thats just about what someone who has REALLY bad judgement might POSSIBLY pay for a vehicle like this. On the other hand, I learned a lot about body work. Namely, learn to accept Good Enuf.

i BOUGHT A 2014 ZL1 CONTROVERTIBLE SUPERCHARGED CAMARO THAT HAD 6 WATER IN IT WITH 3, 300. 00 MILES THAT WAS IN HIS GARAGE DURING HURRICANE HARVEY AND THE LAKE ROSE NEXT TO HIS HOUSE. BOUGHT IT FOR LESS THAN HALF OF BOOK VALUE AT THE TIME. I DROVE IT OFF THE TRANSPORT TRUCK RIGHT INTO MY SHOP, SPENT 1, 000. 00 ON GM CARPET AND COUPLE OF FLOOR PLUGS. I NOW HAVE 16, 000 MILES ON IT AND IT HAS BEEN A PERFECT VERY FAST CAR. THE REASON THEY TOTALED IT IS BECAUSE THEY HAD 33, 000 CARS TO PROCESS IN HURRICANE HARVEY AND WAS EASIER TO DO THAT THEN TRY TO PICK AND CHOOSE WHAT TO REPAIR. AND THE GUY THAT OWNED IT HAD FULL REPLACEMENT ON HIS INSURANCE. VERY HAPPY WITH THIS PURCHASE. I OWN A BODY SHOP AND COULD NEVER FIGURE OUT WHY I HAVE REPAIRED CARS FOR INSURANCE THAT ARE WAY WORSE OFF THAN SOME OF THE RE BUILDERS I BUY. NOW I DRIVE A 45K CAR WITH NO PAYMENTS

Sometimes a vehicle is an economic write off. That usually happens when you get a car thats about 8 - 10 years old. and it gets into a low speed collision. The insurance company may specify that certain parts must be new. like a hood or bumpers or taillights (depending what vehicle. and so the cost of the small amount of damage is more than 3/4 of the book value of the vehicle. so it gets written off. Then you can hunt around for used parts from a salvage yard and replace them that way. The only thing you want to be sure of is that the power train is good and the vehicle doesnt require a complete new front end suspension, or completely new brake components all the way around. If you are going to do this just beware that you may have to pass on a lot of vehicles before you find one that fits the bill.

Scotty they total them anytime the value of the repair is greater then the value of the car. If you have a car with a bluebook value of 1200 and you hit something and it cracks the bumper and headlight/tail light they can total the car. My old car got rear ended it had a dented hood cracked front bumper and coolant res since it was in side the bumper (the car was pushed into the car in front of me), the rear bumper cracked the exhuast was bent. The car still ran fine had no safety issues but the totaled it because the repair bill was higher then the car was worth. I know alot of people who buy and rebuild auction cars, All they own are them. You shouldnt put down all salvaged cars some are good find others or not.

I learned how to drive a standard transmission on the way to get my drivers license. My buddy took me down, I was originally just going down to get my permit and my buddy talked me into just taking the complete test. His logic was sound. If I didnt pass the driving part it wouldnt matter because no one was expecting more than a permit. So I told him I had never driven a stick. He said no problem, well go out in the desert and practice a bit on the way to the DMV. I then proceeded to take my test in a Datsun B210 that had been rolled a week prior. That didnt seem to matter back in those days. We are talking around 1976 or 1977. Anyway I got the license first try on a stick no problem

Mitsubishi mirage salvage titled cars are the cheapest ones to buy on a budget with the lowest miles ever Lol pretty much any fender bender theyre in, the insurance company will deem it as a salvage title So make sure to get all the persons contact info, and RECEIPTS of all replaced parts. Chp will need to see that in order for when you register it, or like me in my case lol, I filled out their paper as to why I wasnt able to obtain the receipts. I payed 6k for a 2016 Mitsubishi mirage with 20k miles. I pay 120 every 6 months for the cheapest Geico insurance, and get 44mpg at 70mph yo. Warranty was transferrable too

Hi i work at an insurance acution. My thoughts is i would pass on these cars as a whole. But you can get good parts if you know what your looking at. There are some nice cars that are still good but seems like there older models. Btw i see you like toyotas iv seen alot with lots of miles 300k plus lol still going, Even running with pretty bad damage. My advise is watch the little dealers around the corner they by cars from use and triple the money all the time. We sell to mexico and africa and the laws are diffrent there iv heard. They can drive cars with junk titles scary.
