4: 00 Scotty although I agree with you on this one, the reason they say put the newer tires in the rear is because understeer is safer than oversteer (because people can't drive. Imagine a wet road, a small slip in the front might make the car skip a lane bit will remain controllable to the typical can't-driver. Scenario with good tires in the front and bad in the back, the car will fishtail immediately and spin out. into who knows what. That's the reason, because 95%+ of people can't handle a car if it loses traction. Also, at high speed, a front tire blowout is much easier to control than a rear tire blowout. On my 370Z I purposely put high performance summer tires in the front for cornering and braking, and cheap (ish) tires in the back for sliding around: )

Sorry Scotty, but there actually is a valid reason for the best tires to be on the rear of a vehicle, it's just that you would not see the benefit doing this in your warm state. In icy conditions, you need equal or better grip at the rear, otherwise when braking, the front slows down faster than the rear of the car. This causes the car to loose control, twirl around backwards, or even spin in circles if the momentum is high enough. This is much more dangerous than the safer alternative, which is to slide (and collide) with objects directly in front of you in your own lane, if unable to stop. The risk is comparable to braking hard with only the front tire of a bicycle, which would launch yourself over the handlebars in a total loss of control.

1: 55 On my way home my Ford truck was rear-ended by a Chevy lowrider drag raceing, pushed over a curb side ways took out a fire hydrant and a stop sign
BAD repair shop the insurance company sent the truck to couldn't get the used front and rear axles aligned. As soon as you'd stop fighting the steering wheel you'd cross three lanes of traffic! They told me that I needed 4 new tires before they would admit they didn't fix the truck. Truck went back to Ford motor credit as a totaled vehicle with 4 new tires.

In a northern state during winter, you put the best tires on the back. Scotty would agree if he tried to take a curve after an ice storm. Fishtailing is not a fun sensation, neither is rolling your car cause you went into the ditch sideways instead of sliding in straight if your front tires broke loose instead. Obviously, this isn't a problem in Texas. This is for my fellow Northerners who know what a snow dune looks like.

I've worked at 3 dealerships and a tire shop, and if I had a nickel for every time one of my coworkers, or even the manager, has told a customer to put the better tires on the rear of a FWD car, I'd be driving an E36 M3 by now. I don't even know how many times I've had to set people straight on that. I even got into an argument with my boss once about it, and it might be part of why I got fired a couple weeks later

You can run 2 identical tires with similar wear on the front. You can do the same with the back.
The back and the front CAN be different. But you should never have differences between the left and right one either the front or the back.
It will cause all sorts of handling and steering issues and will mess with ABS function.
The best scenario is 4 tires of same exact type and wear on all 4 wheels.

WOW! It was nice to hear you talk about the idiots that would put the bad tires on the front. Back in the 60's I talked to a guy that worked at a service plaza on the NYS Thruway. An older lady pulled in to the tire area. She said that the car was riding funny and wanted the winter air changed for the summer air. Her guy back home charged her for that fine service at every season change. Anything for a buck!

I think they know, they just want to rip off the customer. All those places are like that the place I went to, now all 4 of my tires eating from the inside. Have no idea what the heck they had done to it and they are using the electronic type of alignment equipment. I just can't trust all these places now a day, but you just has no choice if you need to get it align.

Tyre grip on the rear is more important than tyre grip up front. There is less load on those rear tyres and the tyres are losing grip a lot faster then the front tyres. Less grip on the rear wants to make the rear overtake the front of the car. The owner should get rid of the goodyear tyre and buy a new matching or a new set of tyres. Never gamble with safety
