This Illegal Car Mod Just Changed the Game autos: I love my tune. If you live in LA and have a VW go to Metric Autosport in Huntington Beach just off 405. My stock 2014 VW GLI has 210 hp/207 tq. My tune gave me + 50 hp/90 tq bonus. That was 450. Plus I got DSG tune for 450. Instant hp improvement, instant torque improvement AND my DSG transmission is WAY WAY smoother. I don t race my car, don t beat on my car. But I do punch it and it s a great sleeper car. Stage 1 tunes are just software upgrades optimizing both performance mapping and fuel economy. Above that you need downpipe with 200 cel cat. If I got an upgraded 2500 turbo and stage 2+ software my car would be 400 hp/400 tq. Above that you need big brake kit, upgraded fuel injectors and upgraded internal to your hpfp. VWs are highly tunable and fun to work on if your mechanically inclined or want to learn. They are not money pits as Scotty says. The solenoids always go out before parts do and they generally cost 35- 50/ea to replace when needed. But I love watching Scotty Kilmer videos. Hope to have him do a video on my car one day if ever passing through Houston.

Car tuning market is flooded with tuners who do not know what they are doing. I'd avoid tuning unless your going to someone who knows what they are doing and your trying for better lap times or quarter mile times with larger turbos etc. With that said alot of shops don't tune properly also or use a 3rd party tuner they assume is good.
I prefer going with a licensed motec tuner and installer. It costs alot more than many other tuning systems, but your going to have a better chance at getting someone who knows what they are doing. With that said there's always hardware that will need to be fixed or replaced during the process so a shop and tuner need to work well together to make the build properly. Again this is gonna cost alot of money to do it right. Generally a small tune isn't going to do much for you, so it's going to be a waste of money for minor tunes for the most part. And you'll waste money if you don't have a competent crew build and tune it. Cause it will break or blow up or constantly go in for fixing.

I bought a cheap OBD 327 from China.
Plugged it into the port, pressed Start. All lights on the dash were randomly flashing. Pressed Start to start the engine. No change in the dash, but the engine was running.
Pressed the button to stop the engine. did not work! The engine could not be stopped. Took out the 327, didn't help.
It's a MT so stepped on the brake, put it in gear and released the clutch to stop the engine.
Luckily everything was ok then, but I've learned something.
Here tax on new cars is CO2 based. So you can buy a BMW 116 that has the same engine as a 118i, 120i, and it limited in torque at higher RPM. a simple tune gets you way more HP.
An older 114i goes from 102 to 220HP.

Scotty love the fact that you always keep up with everything out there. I recently got Hondata. I'm sure you've heard about this. I flash a 6psi tune on my new Civic Sport Hatchback 2020. I installed an intake and tune the AFM to take the most advantage of the hardware and to make sure fuel trims are within 1%. I am not sure how much this can cut the life of an engine but sure the Civic is amazing to drive now. I know you own the celica and the Lexus. Would love for you to try a civic tuneD with HONDATA.

If it wasn't for emissions we wouldn't need computer controlled engines. Had a 1976 Mercedes 280SE and it has mechanical fuel injection which worked very well. Computers just make more repairs with faulty sensors. 1970's Cadillacs had great engines and never had repair issues. Today too much goes wrong that you can't fix at home. Of course if everyone had these old engines today the air would be toxic, years before with far less traffic dirtier burning engines were not a real problem.

Doing any vehicle modifications and especially boosting BHP without informing your insurer? You instantly invalidate your cover. This is why so many modders get stopped by the police to have the validity of your insurance checked. If you are involved in a serious or even a fatal car accident 'even if you are 100% not at blame' the courts will throw the book at you.

My father-in-law shared a funny story where a few years ago he had a newly qualified mechanic working on his car which has a carby. He asked the mechanic to increase the idle speed. and the mechanic shrugged as he does not know how to do this. I guess he is trained on all the modern engines but not on the fundamental designs of a classic engine.

The year is 2025, the landscape is covered in scars and fire as far as the eye can see. One man remains, broken and sitting atop what could only be called ashes masquerading as the remnants of man and a 2005 Toyota Camry. He tilts his head up, slowly inhales, and screams out his final words.
This apocalypse just changed the game!

OBD port is also used by aftermarket entertainment units for rear view cameras in vehicles that did not have an original rear view camera. It lets the unit know that the vehicle is in reverse so that it can switch the screen from the entertainment (or gps information) to the rear view camera.

Scotty, I am concerned about the odometer correction tools that are becoming very affordable and sets up another way for second hand car buyer to be ripped off. Is there a device that you can buy to check if your car's odometer has been monkeyed with? Something a DIYer can afford. Thanks.
