The Real Reason They Stopped Making Inline 6 Cylinder Engines Patrick Bennett: Loved my L6-226 5stroke engine in my old 58 Jeep Sra Wgn. of course it was 4wd manual w xfr case. Wagon was short boxy high boy - nothing like Grand Wagoneer. TORQUE. My experience is that I6s have the best torque. Ive also had Hudson Hornet, Chrysler Royale Coupe w 6fh, Ford Falcon w 200ci 6, and others all torquey right off the line. The L6-226 developed max torque at less than 1000rpm and flat from there. Early V-8s included a 56 Olds Rocket 88. Later AMXs 360, 390. Loved them but gotta have some. rpm to see the rorque. Its all about the area under the curve and your personal driving habits. Presently I drive a Volvo S80 2. 9L DOHC naturally aspirited. Torquey engine. Drop the hammer at any speed and response is great. Love that car. Would NOT trade it for a V8. Hard to squeeze 6cylinders in a line thats transverse and I imagine more costly to make. Ford had one but I dont know where it went. I think all these FWD cars with low hood lines is real reason the inline 6 is seen less in cars. I have always had fewer cooling problems with all my IL6s than my V8s. Using a PU around the farm, ranch, or in the woods the 6 will be more comfortable to drive and use much less gas, esp if the V8 is AT I think Ford builds the best American engines, and that 300- 6 is much better in the woods. My Sierra Grande 350 and Chevy CK20 350 both 350V8 were gas hogs. Ive come to like Ford trucks too. I enjoy all your videos. Keep up the good work.

Scotty, you cant trust the manual for viscosity. Period. BRZ manual says 0w20, but Japan manual recommends up to 5w40. 0w20 is bad in heavy load usage on the BRZ (hills, mountains, track days, autocross. I agree you dont want to drop in a 20w50, it will be way too thick. But this 0w10 garbage is useless for wear protection in heavy loads or high temperatures. Its all a joke because the car manufacturers have to use 0w10 and 0w20 to cheat the emissions tests and increase their profits and bottom line. Be careful and check the European and Asian market manuals for your cars. The North American manuals cannot be trusted.

My first Car was a 1977 Ford LTD Police Interceptor, that is still the best engine Ive ever owned. It was really fast and I never did anything but change the oil, water pump twice, alternator once and standard tune ups. It did get horrible fuel mileage, but I sold it in 2000 with 390k miles on it, never broke down a single time. I know your talking about the 300 engine, but I just had to say something about this car, it was great. The guy I sold it to did the timing chain and restored it. It still drives it to this day with over 500k on the original engine and transmission. They dont make em like that anymore.

Forgot to mention my pride and joy back around 69. Bought a spanking new 69 Pontiac Custom S w OHC inline 6 cyl and AT end of 68. Like a GTO, but w OHC 6. Broke it in, best tires, ran it out to Wyoming on the lonely stretches often steady 135mph. Never overheated and this was July w AC full blast. Superb handling too with that lighter 6cyl giving better weight distribution. Had tried out a 68 Firebird w 400 and 4spd on floor before buying the Custom S. Handling no wheres near as stable with that 400. Straight line from stop put everything else in your rear view but poor weight distribution hurt handling.

I have had 3 i6 one with over 400k they was all fords cant beat em had one with 0 antifreeze and less then a quart of oil still ran over heated I put it all back in and kept right on driving it truck was that way when it was given to me by my grandma had another was a mud truck it was ran wide all the time it was the one with over 400k and now I have one thats a show truck everyone wants to buy it when they see it. Thats why they dont make em anymore because they r just to damn good seems to beat on tork but hp forget it they r slow af but u could tow a house

hard to put an inline six in a front drive corolla, most of the american inline sixes were set up with small cylinder bore size and longer stroke, the camshaft profile was set up to give maximum torque at low rpm and hp peaked a around 4000 rpm. this allowed it to pull heavy rear wheel drive cars and trucks without a problem. and get little better fuel economy than v8. these engines seem to last longer than v8s because they turned lower rpms to do the same job.

The era of rear wheel drive on sedans ended long time ago inline 6 engines are for rear wheel drive because their long size most sedans and SUV are now front wheel drive the only rear wheel drive cars are the race cars. It is more practical and inexpensive to mass produce v6 that can be mounted on different models either sedans SUV or trucks for example v6 Nissan uses the same v6 on different cars like G35, Z, Maxima, Altima and frontier

Inline sixes went away because they didnt fit in transverse front-wheel drive platforms. Now that V6 engines are disappearing from FF cars and V8s are disappearing from FR luxury cars, the I6 is coming back as a replacement for V8s in luxury cars. Mercedes has a new one and soon Mazda ) will have one too. Also with the marginalization of V8s, it makes more sense to design your six as an inline four plus two than a V8 minus two.

Really Scotty? You think the Toyota Corolla Hatchback or the Toyota Matrix can compete with the Golf GTI/R, Focus ST/R, Hyundai Veloster Turbo Rspec/N, Civic Type R, or even the Fiesta ST. You dont know hatchbacks. Hilarious There are tons of hot hatch reviews on youtube and none of them even consider anything from toyota. Toyota got no bite in the hot hatch segment. You are starting to look like a Toyota stooge.
