5 Reasons Fixing Your Own Car Will Change Your Life gittyupalice96: By the by, Scotty failed to mention almost every state in the U. S. A. has a technical highschool or Trade school often times they throw out older books for all the shops, Automotive/Autobody/Carpentry/HVAC. ETC. ETC. You can call up the shop class teachers directly from the school extensions and just simply ask Hey Im interested in an Automotive book, do you have any old ones laying around and if not could you give me the information on the current ones? In wich case youll either get a free one or be directed to a current book that will tell you all kinds of procedures and simple things to stay safe while doing them. Hell even some of the OLD Haynes repair manuals, (1990s and earlier) Will go Waaaaaay in depth on how to not only switch out parts, but how to completely dis-assemble and re-furbish things that you probably didnt realize you could re-build for a couple ofbucks rather than spend a couple hundred on a new part assembly. Even if the book isnt for your specific vehicle find an old Haynes or old OEM service manual the dealers used and you can look up practically how to do everything the safe and correct way. Match that with referencing videos on youtube and the combined knowledge will be invaluable Dont be fooled ASE certified mechanics do NOT know everything, and they themselves look things up all ofthe time

I could not agree more. Started late doing my own thing and was so sad to see how easy most of it was. Did my crankshaft positioning sensor recently and felt pride. Best example I have is this; 3 years ago the multifunction switch went on my 2010 Grand Caravan (turn signals, wipers, washer fluid lights etc) I was frying everyone with my high beams. The dealership said it would be 500 for the part and 2 hours labour. Being that I am not as liquid as Id like to be, I thought I would look up the work on line. Well here is the shocker; went down to the local Lordco, bought the part for 200 and my 14 year old son with zero experience, changed out the part in the parking lot of the shop in 5 minutes. STEALERSHIPS LEARN TO WORK ON YOUR CARS PEOPLE When my daughter gets back from Uni later today she will be putting her summer tires back on. Simple I know but everyone should learn. She just bought her first car (10 year old Hyundai) so she will learn more. Both of my daughters have done the brakes with me, oil changes and simple tune ups. Funny the boy seems to disappear when the time comes. Love this channel safe travels to all. Chears from Canada.

My first time ever looking at an engine, I was probably 12 or 13 and had to climb up onto a step ladder to help my dad check something (I dont completely remember what I was just excited to see the hulking mass of metal and hold the light) on his F350 truck. From then on, anytime he had to do any work on his truck or my moms car, I wanted to be there to help I actually found I really liked getting a little grease under my nails. When I got my license on my 16th birthday, I was already able to change my own oil, change and rotate tires, change a battery, change my spark plugs, air filter stuff like that. Those skills have been a LIFESAVER for me through college and now as a young adult, ESPECIALLY a female, it gives me a sense of pride to know I learned those skills and can save myself a lot of time and money, or at least know when someone else is feeding me crow Someday, Id really like to actually rebuild a car of my own. Now just to find the space, time, and money to start the whole project.

About 19 years ago, my daughters mid-80s Plymouth Reliant died on her. Fortunately the car was parked at work and when she came out, it simply would not start. The check engine light was on, so I did the key on, off, on, off, on sequence and wrote down the codes that flashed like morse code. I then got a code book and it said the map sensor (whatever that is) was bad. I found it, went to a junk yard, that GAVE me one I took off a car, installed it on her car (it took just a few minutes, and the car started right up. Did the same thing for the Dodge omni that was stuck in the driveway for months, and used it for our mid-90s lebaron convertible and even our 300M when a coil went out. It told me which one. :) I was A chrysler man back in the 90s, and am now a Scion man. Funny thing is I own three Scions: A toyota, a Subaru and a Mazda (xB, FR-S and iA. Kinda funny.

Not all oil change places are bad, sure they will try sell you other services you might need other than the oil change but they can do it faster and cheaper than any mechanic or dealership, even if you buy the filter and oil, do it yourself you only save a few bucks because like you said they get the oil in bulk quantities and filters etc much cheaper than a person who goes to Autozone or whatever, My shop uses Valvoline as a house brand and Valvoline filters which are just like a regular purolator filter. Lube shops sell the oil changes cheap and all the other stuff is where they make the money, I work in a lube shop I can change my own oil super easy and at half price and I can get other stuff like pcv valves wipers batteries at cost so its like a benefit for working there: )

Scotty, I love your videos. you help me fixing my own car many many times. BUT why do you always say Chinese parts when you couldve just said Cheap parts? I agree with you some of the products made in China arent the best, because meet some of the USA(or some other countries) distributors low(cheap) requirements. Saying cheap Chinese parts like saying greedy mechanics two things might not have anything to do with each other. Made in USA have higher quality in general because there are rules and regulations not allowing some products to be made in lower standards. but if rules change, there can be USA companies making low-cost products to meet the low-cost products demand. Once again, Thank you very much. I appreciate your time and effort in making those videos.

My wife dont have trust in me to fix her car or changing oil. So my wife took her car to get the oil change (which I already told her that I bough oil and filter to oil on her car. After getting her car oil changed at the shop, one of the guy that changed her car oil told her that she will soon need her car tires changed. Watching many of your videos in YouTube, I am able to smell the BS those mechanics was trying to do (getting my wife to spend more money on her next oil service. I inspect my wife car tires and they look spanking new. Thank you Scotty Kilmer for sharing your knowledge, youre like the God of mechanics. I totally agree. I am satisfied with how much I know able fixing car. A life changing for me.

I was so satisfied when I first realized how easy an oil change is which for they charge a lot of money and I just probably did it within an hour all by myself. I knew I used the right type of quality oil, quality filter, I changed the drain bolt, I knew everything is done well and unlike some really complicated parts of the car which require professionalism and experience or just very expensive tools and machines, this is easy to do and you know what you are doing. Most people are probably just lazy to even read about the stuff or watch videos about how to do it, but they surely dont want to lay under the car and get dirty.

I dont know why I love this man, all the scams that we get into with mechanics, oil changer, or even tire repair people, lead me to start fixing my first car (and it still) since three and half years ago, because at the beginning every time I go to mechanic or, I return with big deception with big bills and big self underestimation, then when I wanted to do everything I can, I saved a lot and felt away better, even though i dont have a garage and live in the city, I do it in the street, I always wish I have garage so I can weld and do lot more. inchallah

Love my 2010 fj oil, diff fluid, transfer case fluid, front and rear diff fluid, so easy to change on my own, unjointed and drive shaft grease is piece of cake, next is trans fluid simple drain and trans filter simple to replace. At 150k will probably replace easy to access spark plugs, radiator fluid, belts and hoses. Love Toyotas. When brakes go Ill probably do brake fluid flush and power steering fluid flush. Love Toyotas. Seeing how they lasted while living in Africa, Asia and the Middle East and here in the USA, I wont buy any other brand.
