I have a 2017 Mazda 3 that I got brand new for fuel efficiency but never enjoyed driving it because it had all these electronics and bells and whistles and I could never take it off road or it was useless in the snow so I gave it to my wife who loves it. I looked around and got a fairly cheap 98 4runner 4wd with 253, 000 miles as a beater. Best car Ive ever owned. It taught me how to change oil and diff and transfer case fluid and coolant, spark plugs, cleaning the Maf and iac and gaskets etc while buying tools to fix it. Its a joy to drive and made me want to educate myself about cars and engines and codes and how the car works. It keeps me home and out of trouble. Something I wouldnt have experienced with the fairly new Mazda. The car gave me confidence in doing mechanical work and made me think and sharpen my logical thinking. The insurance i pay for it is 80. The beater 4runner did more for me in terms of education and gives me a hobby and a feeling of accomplishment with any little thing i fix as well as a respite from the daily grind at the clinic i work at. Id say the rewards are a thousand times greater than the measly cash I put into it.

I had an old escort, was like 12 years old when I got it(in the 90s. Ran it for about 6 more years and needed a new engine because of a crack. This gave me pause but I didnt have a ton of options with buying anything in the area except some used car lots that were overcharging on crap that would be in the same boat in a few years. My girl was pushing me to spend my money on a down payment for a used car, instead of a rebuilt engine. So I did the math, my car cost me about 40 bucks a month, counting the 900 I paid, the odds and ends I had repaired, and the new engine. That would be cheaper than what I would be paying for the next few years on this used car. So I repaired the engine, and it gave me another 12 years before I sold it cheap to someone who wanted a beater for his kid. As long as the mechanics will still repair it, it is still usually worth it unless you got a deal to get into a different used car.

In 1989, when I was 20 years old, I bought a 1973 Chevy Impala that had been sitting for 2 years. It was puke green, rusty, sitting on 4 flat tires. I paid 75. Thats not a typo, Seventy Five dollars. For 50 worth of plugs, wires, oil and filters, I got it running again. 40 for 4 used tires on Chevy rims from a local junkyard. I had it on the road and registered for under 350, TOTAL, including the car. I drove it for one winter, gave it to my girlfriend who drove it year-round for 3 years, then got in a wreck. (She was rear-ended. She asked if I wanted the car back, I said sure. I sold it for the motor and transmission for the 350 I originally had in the entire car 3 years earlier. So 3 1/2 years we got out of that beater car essentially for free. I wish young people today could still have that kind of experience

I purchased my current beater car, a 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer VR-X, just over ten years ago. with cash. Of all the cars that I have purchased, this one is the most reliable and cost effective. Apart from the normal wear and tear maintenance, the only major items that were replaced, a faulty alternator and replaced a pair of McPherson struts. The paint work is still immaculate, the interior is still immaculate (I look after it very well, and dont drive it like a hoon. The used by date I dunno. Maybe when Im not fit enough to drive a car, that itll be sold. in twenty years time. Great video I often wonder, how people who drive gleaming 70, 000+ 4x4s, paid for their vehicles. Ive paid cash with all of my previous purchased cars.

I got the hand me down beater car. Mazda GLC four door manual. back in about 1987 or so. haha. I spray painted it black. no more rust. I beat the piss out of it. cracked the head. some lovely coolant coming out the tail pipe. broke down on the highway on the way to a house party. Second hand me down was an awesome car got from my mom for about 2k. Silver 1982 Honda Prelude. loved that card. ran forever. easy to fix and I handed it down to my little bro. First car I ever bought was a pee green 1980 Chevy Malibu. lol Grandma car at the time. Put white fuzz on the dash. fuzzy dice and a garter belt on the rear view. oh yeah. Girls went crazy for it. not really. Good times in it though

I keep trying to tell my friends the same thing. Just had one lease a Chevy spark from a dealer for 7500 after her boyfriend totalled her previous car she was 2k away from paying for (original 18k. For that kind of money, you can buy a beater once a month for a whole year. Got me a 97 Nissan Maxima for 500 and another 500 for new tires, and so far thats all Ive sunk into it, besides a belt, oil change and gas. Yeah, its got more problems coming on, but I get to and from work and my next car will also be a beater.

My beater is a rear wheel drive 91 volvo 740. I do all the maintenance myself. It has 218k miles and simply will will not quit. My local Home depot features this model on a placard on how to properly load a vehicle with supplies such as plywood and lumber on the roof. I get a kick out of that I swear that this car, if it should ever flip, that the a, b, c pillars are strong enough to prevent the roof from caving in. There are plenty of parts available and many forums on the internet for reference.

I bought my Chevy S10 2000, in September 2016 for 2100 (price+ taxes + registration) + invested about another 2k (tires, breaks, water pump, alternator, new fuel tank with pump) and I assumed that Im gonna keep it for 2 years. You know what? This car doesnt want to die Since I invest in it some money Ill probably drive it till rust eat it whole. I drive Chevy for about 20 - 50 miles a week and really do not care about scratches etc. I have another car to go outs. But nothing can beat my Chevy.
