The Biggest Mistake in Automotive History, Elio Motors Marshall McDermott: I was able to drive one of the mockups with the Geo Metro engine. I actually dont think the intention was to have it be used for contra flow lanes. They actually put out articles about wanting to avoid forcing buyers to get a motorcycle license. I think they got stuck between their two big claims and realized they couldnt deliver on either. The initial offering was supposed to be 81mpg minimum at 3, 700. Realistically they would have done better to concede on the mpg and go down as low as 70 mpg and potentially up to 5, 000. I still think this would have worked. Its difficult in todays market to get even a used vehicle near 5k. Much less one with that great mileage. I think he was also pretty adamant about creating his own engine so that he had an asset to keep the company going, but he never found it. Think about it. if the only thing that was special about the Elio was that it was smaller and lightweight, had a 3 cylinder engine that was obtainable for anyone and marketed at 4k you would instantly be put out of business by a larger company that could achieve the same results with better manufacturing practices than you. Its a shame that it didnt gather more traction because it would have been the Dollar shave club of the auto industry. Forcing the big guys to make an affordable high mileage option. However, looks like its not going to go into production and rather than create videos and comments relishing the failure we as Americans should be sad because its really a loss for the little guy and a big win for the greedy 10%

1: 45 Ive only bought cars that were used. Id like to some day own a new car but a lot has to change before I take that leap. Namely Im holding out on decent electrics to be mainstream sub-20k with a better charging options. That said I also intentionally buy cars that are only worth fixing up to around what I spent to buy them. My 2000 Sunfire I paid about 5000 for it (it was 8 years old and to this day is still the newest car I ever bought. After spending around 5000 on repairs (not including things like oil, tires) I decided it was time to part with it. I paid 7000 on a Grand Marquis. It was my wifes car mainly. She totaled it. But we probably spent about 4500 on repairs in the 4 or 5 years we had it. So. it was getting toward the end of life anyway. I had a truck. Spent 7000 on it and only spent about 6000 in repairs over I want to say 7 years. And decided it was time to part with it (also divorce happened so that was one of the remaining joint assets that wasnt the house. My dad gave me a 2005 Grand Marquis (it was the 5th Ford Panther Ive owned. Since I spent 0 on the purchase I spent 0 on maintenance was ready to part ways (it would have been fine for another inspection but I wrecked it. Finally. My Aztek. Paid 1400 in August. I figure I can spend about 1700 in repairs before I get sick of it (since I spent 1400 with a fuel leak and a bad wheel bearing. so I consider that first 300 spent as part of purchase price.

Elio Is not a scam. There are REAL serious backers behind him, that arent in the habit of losing money. Many want and NEED this simple and inexpensive vehicle especially the poor and the struggling, commuting middle-class. There are a lot of people in his way including, electric vehicle sycophants who are making 3 wheelers backed by the likes of Tom Steyer, the Louisiana politicians and attorney general who are getting flack from the car dealers association. Why? Besides they contribute to their campaigns, Elio doesnt sell by dealers. Hes up against a mafia. Remember Tucker motors? Many great things are going on behind the scenes because Paul Elio was told to STFU with his pie-in- the- sky deadlines and spending money like a tycoon on pretentious hipster marketing garbage. This vehicle can and in time, will be available with electric power-plants.

u should make a video about which tools u guarantee need to start learning and working on ur own personal project car. know u recommend the blue driver a lot and looks reviews im for sure gonna to invest in that asap. but for example i was taking off my front manifold today and i have a basic amazon brand 180 socket kit and during the process of getting my front manifold off i notice a nut i cannot get to with a basic socket, im going to need a metric flex socket to get to it so now i have to purchase a new set of tools to finish the job im tryna do while i could of just purchase everything i needed a long time ago. just to say like stuff we would need so just in case a average problem happen with our car at home or stranded wat should we always have on us (beginner tips)

About 2 years ago Elio Motors had a investor group which had funding (320 Million +) needed to get production going, BUT Paul Elio due to his incompetence / arrogance REJECTED THEM. Long story short Paul wanted full control of everything, IE: He wanted to given (320 + Million) with NO-STRINGS attached. PATTERN? Google Professor Elio Seat IIRC, Paul, or should I say the students came up with a SEAT DESIGN. Manufacturer was interested, but Paul refused to relinquish any control as well. Paul walked away with several million on that deal too so he has a pattern of raising money. . and walking away with the money with NO PRODUCT being produced. Sad thing is Elio will never be produced and Paul Elio and his buddies have walked away with the deposit money given them.

Mr Elio made a HUGE mistake by not going with an electrical drivetrain. He spent a lot of money having others design a small gas powered engine, when he could have bought an electric motor off the shelf. He had all of the makings of the first practical electric car, the car always lying Elon Musk claimed was his goal. High fuel mileage body design means you only need a small battery and that battery can be recharged quickly. Right now Electra Meccanica has a three-wheeled electric car about to go into production called the SOLO, with 2. 4 BILLION in preorders. But it can only carry a single passenger. Cost 15, 500 minus 7500 Federal tax credit - net 7500 vehicle.

Scotty, about the Lucas additive. Im a professional trucker. I have a Cummins ISX in my truck. 850k miles and still runs like new. I dont use Lucas. I add a quart of gear oil to thicken my oil during PMs. Regular engine oil has metal preserving additives in it. Lucas has no metal preserving additives. It only makes your oil thicker. So when you add Lucas you are actually diluting your metal preserving additives. When you add gear oil you thicken the oil and you increase your metal preserving additives because gear oil has a higher concentration of metal preserving additives than motor oil. Lucas is really just a marketing gimmick. Just a thought for you.

I understand so many think it was a scam or would never be a success but I think there is a potential for it. Id buy one just for my daily commute to work for the price and I have a fuel efficient 2017 Mazda RF. Just the peace of mind not worrying about some dingbat dinging my door would be worth it to me. Im the person who parks farthest away. and appreciates my vehicles no matter how new or how old. I also think the car could be sold overseas. where fuel is like 5 a gallon. I hope its built. but time will tell. I will 100% buy one myself if/when it does.

I love Castrol GTX. All Ive ever put in my 04 Tacoma and it now has 250, 000 miles. Burns no oil & still sounds like the day I drove it off of the dealer lot with 6 miles on it. Did the oil changes myself at around 4000 miles since its pretty cheap oil & I run my truck hard as hell in mountainous terrain, haul lots of loads and live on a long dirt road. 2. 7 3RZFE by the way. Oh and even though everyone hates them I went ahead and used Fram oil filters (the cheapest ones) since I knew I was going to change them often. They work just fine.

I got excited at the prospect of that vehicle, but like you came to the conclusion it was not going to come to market. I DO like the Arcimoto and think we will be seeing them on the road in some places. There really IS an untappedniche market for something for short commutes and shopping trips etc. An electric drivetrain makes perfect sense for this application. I like the Twizy even better, but well probably never see a four-wheeler like that in the U. S. due to safety standards. alas.
