Never thought id see malaysian national cars in scottys channel. Abit of backstory on those two brands, the proton first: PROTON, or PeRusahaan OTOmobil National (national automobile company) was malaysias effort to make their own automobile n not rely too much on imports. They started of rebadging mitsubishis, then gradually made their own designs, n finally engineered their own engine n chassis. It had a lot problems over the years n is currently half-owned by geely. Latest model is proton x70 which is a geely suv that been rejigged to suite malaysias climate n drivers. Its protons first suv btw. Produa (perusahaan otomobil national kedua, or second national car company (very creative) was an effort by the gov to create a form of competition for perodua. Peroduas strategy is vastly different from proton. Where proton was always trying new (and expensive) new things, produa stuck to their guns n relied on proven tech. the underpinnings of all perodua cars are toyota. The engine, the chassis, the transmission, the gadgets. All toyota. Its only recently (as of 2017 i think) that they actually designed their own cars. Still had underpinnings n tech of toyota though. Cars here r pricey. A 5series in the US could be 50k-60k dollars. Here its almost 100k after conversion due taxes n such. N we dont earn as much. What u guys earn in dollars, we earn the same value but in Ringgit, n our ringgit is 4x weaker than the dollar. So u can imagine people wanting a bang-for-ur-buck car. Something that will last 10 years problem free, decent resell value n easy to live with. N produa being a toyota in a different dress, means theyve been the number 1 car maker in malaysia for several years out of shear reliability n cheapness of repairs. Sorry if its abit long but i hope u got a glimpse of another countrys car culture, scotty

Well I never thought Id see the day where I disagree with Scotty but Honda Civicsbetter than a Toyota Corolla has a flaw in the logic. The 2. 0 L engine Yes but the 1. 5 Turbo - No. The 1. 5 Turbo will wear out and replacing a Turbo will be expensive. The added strain on the 1. 5 engine that has a Turbo does not bode well for the longevity of the engine itself. That doesnt even include the oil dilution problem on some 1. 5 engines which Honda has been reluctant to admit so whos to say it doesnt include other models that have this engine. Just saying.

Honda customer service in the US is terrible now. Example, my 2007 civic has a problem with clear coat lifting off paint. Initially they recalled the car and repainted my hood and the dealership told me to bring it back if the rest of body deteriorates. Called Honda customer service again when the entire car started to rot and they said, so sorry for your problem but we are not going to fix the rest of body even though the dealership told you so. But we understand your anger. I would never buy another Honda.

To continue on what you said about book time; I used to work at Pep Boys as a mechanic, and I had a 2000 or so Mitsubishi Galant with a 3. 0 V6 and a tune up for it paid 3. 5 hours with wires. I got it done in 1. 5 hours, roughly, and the customer was crying that he had to pay for the full time. I told him, a new guy could have talked 4 hours on it, so it would feel like hes getting a discount, half our of free labor He wasnt thrilled, no sense of humor.

Scotty, Ive had 2 1991 Honda Accords with automatic transmissions. The 1st one I bought with 115, 000 miles & smashed it with 275, 000 miles, & the 2nd one I bought with 75, 000 miles & got rid of that one with 235, 000 miles on it. Both engines were running strong and both transmissions were shifting just fine. Is this not normal or something? I had 2 Civics too but I dont think they were taken care of before I got my hands on them.

I love my 2018 Honda Civic base model. Only paid 21k for it. Ive put 30k miles on it in 9 months and not the slightest bit of a problem has surfaced. Reminds me of my old 97 nissan d21 pickup. I ran that thing HARDDDDDD, and I mean every single stop sign I was spinning tires, well, at least I tried too. Lasted 420k miles, bought it used at 210k miles for 4k in excellent condition. Hopefully my new Honda will last that long.

There have been reports verified by Honda that the 1. 5 liter tubocharged civic /CRV engine has problems with gas getting into the oil. Honda has put out a report on this as well as a video acknowledging this is a problem. I would not, under current circumstances, risk getting a car with an engine where gas is going to get into the oil and alter the viscosity of the oil leading to engine damage.

Own a 1989 Honda Civic CRX has over 220, 000 miles and its still running perfect. Its been thorough 3 timing belts and water pumps, 3 alternators and 1 transmission with clutch. But the engine is still going strong even with that mileage. Keep in mind the car is 30 years old. Replaced transmission only because PREV owner neglected the transmission but he took good care of engine.

Parodua cars are better then Proton cars as Parodua cars are made in collaboration with Toyota. So generally toyota gives their engines to Parodua and rename the cars such as Parodua Myvi is toyota Passo. Proton cars were initially build on Mitsubishi platforms but not any more and its quality is also not as good as Parodua in the wake of keeping the prices low. Hope this helps
