How did the Soviets React to the Moon Landings? Documentary Heavente: If space race was about who can better deliver WMD, how is it USA that won? When USSR got first into space? And was leading in WMD till today? I dont get it tbh. If universe is infinite, nobody can trully win in a space race. If there is no end or beggining. But if you set goal. which wasnt objectively set by anyone. Then it is completely subjective.
We can look at objective points.
First object in space? USSR.
First living being in space? USSR.
First human in space? USSR.
First human on moon? USA
On points, USSR just won 3: 1
But we can continue if other missions after cold war, but again. Nobody can win objectively.

Won the space race is misleading. Out of 22 records related to the space race, the US only holds 1. Yes, putting a man on the moon is a great achievement, but the USSR did most things first and most of their missions had greater value for science, for example landing several probes on the surface of a several hundred degree hot high pressure hell formally known as Venus and even analyzing the soil, something no one else has done to this day.

The real reason the USSR never got to the moon is that the lead scientist of the USSR space program was an old nazi who died of a heart attack shortly after they got a man into orbit. The entire program then ground to a halt as no one else was willing to take up a job where mistakes were often punished harshly. So the USSR space program was pretty much dead while the Americans caught up, overtook, and then landed a man on the moon.

The USSR: first satellite, first animal in space, first man and woman in space, first space station, first landing on other planet, first spacewalk, first landing on the moon
The USA: first man on the moon
Winner: USA
And the Soviets did it without scientists from the Third Reich.
Speaking of which. just like WW2: the Soviets defeated Germany, the Americans claim victory.

About comparing US response to Sputnik, I feel like the difference is that the USSR knew they were losing the space race in '69 (or at least it was probably not surprising that they were falling behind, meanwhile AIUI Sputnik came as a total surprise to the Americans in '57, and the implications (they have accurate guidance systems for ICBMs) could have been extremely dangerous and scary!

Honestly looking at it, its crazy that the Americans made it to the moon first. The Soviets had the first satellite, animal and person in orbit. They were also the first to orbit the moon and get someone to the dark side. We were so far behind and bam. We won the race to a man on the moon.
I am not denying it but its crazy when you look at it all.

In 1954, the Soviet Union proposed unconditional renunciation of use of atomic, hydrogen and other forms of weapons of mass destruction. The United States responded that all countries must be allowed to possess and use weapons of mass destruction in order to deter aggression.

to be fair, sputnik represented that soviet nukes could land anywhere in the world and there was nothing anyone could do about it. the moon landing didn't have any overt military implications. so it is fully expected that the reaction to the latter would be more positive.

That unmanned mission was a good move though. If Apollo 11 had failed, then the USSR would look really good, even if they failed too: We knew it was dangerous so didn't send people would be nearly as much of a propoganda win as their unmanned lander succeeding.

My father saw the moon landing on live TV in Czechoslovakia as a kid. It certainly wasn't overshadowed by commemorating 20 years of communist rule. After all the 20 years anniversary was in February 68, while moon landing happened in July 69.

It would've been more work to fake the moon landings than to actually do it. Too many eyes, too many built Saturn 5 by hand, all the millions gallons of fuel, to send it out of atmosphere, and back, without Soviets calling it out etc

The Americans put the first object into space during operation Blumbob where America tried to see what would happen if we dug a deep hole, put a a-bomb in it with a 2 ton steel Lid on it then accidentally made a nuclear gun.

Buzz aldrin submitted a form to be reimbursed for this travel that summer which included the moon as a destination. Since the government actually paid for that's leg of his travel, he wasn't reimbursed but it's still funny.

If you think about the Space Race as something meant to be used in warfare, there's really no reason for the SU to be upset that the Americans made it to the moon, as there's zero tactical advantage for them doing so.
reply

First satellite, first man in space, first woman in space, first probe landings on the moon/Mars/Venus, first space station. Overall the USSR accomplished a lot more firsts than the USA during the space race.
reply

Funny how USA was once a Hero and now turned into a villain for most of the planet. All the US allies are forced allies or bought friends and instead of landing on Mars after the moon, they invade every country.

By the early 1960s, space launchrs and missiles were very different. Launchers were liquid fueled. They were more powerful, but fueling took time. Missiles are solid fueled. Just press a button and they're off.
reply

The explosion of the Soviet moon rocket which obliterated the launch pad and sat back the program by a few years and costed millions, was probably also the reason USSR dropped the project altogether.

The cartoon shows a retro rocket being used to slow the LEM b4 it lands. Under the LEM, there was no blast zone. NASA put out a similar cartoon, but the photos are clear, no blast zone. It's a fraud.
