Brazil was one of the larger allies during the Second World War when it declared war in 1942. But given that it had good relations with Germany and that it could have avoided the war quite easily why did it join? Why did Brazil join the allies?

When I was in school I went to a small museum dedicated about these soldiers and WWII. It was awesome because there was a very old guy who would tell us about the battles and the culture shock between the american troops and the brazilians in Italy, there is this amazing story (that I didn't knew it was well known until I saw a english video about it) that the americans stole food I think from the brazilians, and they talk to their american superior about it but he just said Well you know, times of war are hard so then they stole a whole tank from they and said the same thing lmao. They then stopped stealing food.
But to me most important the stories about how they shared food and water (which were already very limited) with Italian civilians who were starving at the time. He recalled someone (I don't remember if it was his dad or someone specific) who gave his food and water to a woman who was really hungry and pregnant. Then years latter after the war he went back to this city and when a girl who worked in a restaurant asked if he was a brazilian soldier (because he was wearing the uniform) and he said yes, they refused to let them pay for the food, he and his colleagues because they were very thankful for what they did during the war in those cities. He said to this day they are always so respectful and grateful for what they done to any brazilian soldiers who go there, is very wholesome. And I'm pretty sure that that guy reunited with the woman he helped or her daughter out of luck when he was in Italy (can't remember the details because thay was a long time ago lmao. I find those human moments way more impressive than winning any battles.

As I learned, not quite this way! Brazil was neutral until Brazilian ships were sunk by the Germans because the Brazilian goods were supplying the allies. After three ships sunken, Vargas declared war against Germany, Italy and Japan.
Even in Brazil, many descendants of this three countries were threatened by the natives ( especially the Germans ) because of the propaganda against such. Italians and Japanese. Less!
Brazilians fought really hard in Italy as mentioned in the video and were asked to stay longer with all the support of USA to continue helping. Then Vargas had internal problems to solve and bringing veterans back alive from a world war against major powers pushed his influence up.
Not all what you hear is true.
Check the other side.
Bribery. Its the first time I hear of it after studied the Brazilian ww2 participation in 25 years!

From 1942-45 the brazilian navy joined the allied efforts in Atlantic War. We escorted merchant ships, hunted german submarines and helped to protect the Panama Chanel. Although we only sent land troops to Europe in 44, we were active in the war since the declaration against the Axis.

Doesn't Vargas getelected again? Then removed again. super permanently. kinda by himself?
And you didn't mention the smoking snakes (which are kinda fun!
That said, thumbs up; good video

Whats funnier than seeing Vargas frolicking across a field of flowers is seeing in bold letters Free Money!
I can get behind that!
Not the being ousted by position part, no.

Another factor was probably that Argentina, Brazil's prime adversary in South America, was perceived as teetering on the brink of siding with Germany.

Why didn't Mexico send troops to fight Italy and Germany in Eroupe just like the other allies and Mexico just only fought in the Pacific in WW2?
reply

Never actually knew why Brazil joined WWII until this video despite my Brazilian Grandfather being a part of it.
reply

Funny fact in Brazil we ousted a dictator and then a few years lather we elected him and he killed himself!

Very little is ever told about anyone outside Britain and the US in regards to WWII, particularly Latin America

Sounds like Vargas was a pretty smart dude. Until he got too smart for his own good. And so the story goes
reply

Its because they were trying to get the You Are Going To Brazil achievement before the meme became popular.
reply

Vargas is the definition of an odd leader, he was the smartest and the dumbest leader at the same time.
reply

Might be a myth but don't forget the 3 men that held of the Germans for some time and refused to surrender
reply

I love how diverse the brazilians are shown here!
I mean, it's waay more representative than our own TV

reply

The images of the newspaper Brasilia Times is an anachronism. Brasilia didn't exist during World War II.
