America also didn't join in the war because America still wasn't a major power on the world stage. They had mostly been tending to their own neighborhood with their war with Mexico being their only foray outside of their territory (Native Americans having alternate views on the subject) since the War of 1812. It had worked out pretty well as focusing on economic development rather than incessant costly wars was quickly turning them into the major power they'd become. The Civil War had only served to remind them of what a waste war is in terms of lives of economic wealth.

Ah ha! I've literally never once seen you make a mistake before! You are always somehow irreproachable and yet don't hold back any punches. A very rare trait and skill indeed. But I've finally got you:
Possibly one of the biggest deciding factors was that anyone considering a wait-and-see policy clearly lost that options when the war turned against France nearly immediately and the momentum never really let up.
There was no point in helping or honour piling in on France.

1: 21 'the problem was that Italy has positive relations with both Berlin and Paris. ' did it given Napoleon III. policies towards Italy prior and during its Resorgimento process just a few years earlier, this is quite a claim. he demanded and got Savoy and the county of Nice from Sardinia. we should keep in mind WHAT exactly brought about the idea of the _International Red Cross_ organisation. the _Battle of Solferino_

Not to mention, The French were still being the idiot level aggressors here, literally fighting over the denial of a huge generational level ask to an ambitious expansionist. People call Austrian demands in WW1 unreasonable when one of their head of state was killed by an enemy-supported separatist group, That's certainly more worthy point to start a war than this.

Some of my ancestors were from that chunk of land that Germany took from France, they ended leaving Europe altogether and coming to South America. One of them went back to France to fight on WW1 but he was kinda too old at that point and ended up dying from other reasons before reaching the battlefield.
reply

I'm kinda not sold on Italy. They might not have had the most capable army but that's not really an issue when you have Germany doing all the heavy lifting, specially if you enter late like they did in WW2. And irredentism was in full swing back then. Hard to believe they wouldn't want Lombardi back

Don't forget that the annihilation of the Paris Commune and establishment of a Bourgeois republic in France was seen as a very desirable turn of events in Britain.
There's no way they were cool with a guy named Napoleon being Emperor in France, and the Paris Commune terrified Europe.

People should really get it in their heads that the german empire was a force of peace for europe. 1871-1914 thats an unpresedented time of peace and stability. Destroying the german empire in their war directly led to world war two and beyond. The allies where reckless

I don’t think it’s fair to say that the US didn’t care at all about European politics the Grant administration was notable for taking a much more active role in the Old World than previous governments. Of course that didn’t extend to actively fighting a war there.

1: 37 Also France, was the only country protecting the Vatican and preventing Italy from fully unifying, unless it wanted to fight france.
So france being at war and pulling its troops back, was a prime choice for Italy to take the papal state.

reply

Launching an overseas war when much of the country was in ruins, either to help an autocratic despot or a despotic autocrat, would have been one of the world ideas possible.
History Matters spitting modern political commentary on a history video lol

Gotta love the artwork put into these, even down to getting the military uniforms right for the exact time period of the video, even the finer details of what the headgear would have looked like during the 1870s, wonderful research!
reply

Does fail to mention that in certain German circles they wanted to continue the war, and really whomp France, but Bismarck was precisely concerned that in that case all those European powers listed would gang up on Germany.
reply

It can't be stated what an impressive achievement the entente cordiale was. Two sworn enemies who'd be warring for centuries made a pact and stuck with it during two world wars (mostly. The vichy french don't count)

Please do a video on the following topics:
One. Why did the people's revolution of 1848 fail in Spain and the German states
Two. Why do people drive on different sides of the road and different countries

reply

One thing to note regarding Italy was that they took advantage of the war to conquer Rome from the Pope, as the French troops stationed there to protect the Papal States were withdrawn to fight in the war.

Good one!
Though, I can't pinpoint the reason, my music is normal, checked the loudspeakers, but this video seems to be too quiet, and it also seems to be that in contrast to older videos from you.

reply

I wonder if this was another factor- the outcome was all but decided after two months. Even if another power wanted to join and aid France, the window to do so closed almost as soon as it opened.

One of your most clever scripts you have ever created. I'm gonna watch it over and over again and share it with lots of people. Wonderful job keep going I hope you get rich. Your friend in Texas
reply

Because the diplomats and statesmen of the time were truly the brightest of their people. If many of these same leaders and diplomats were in power in 1914, WWI would’ve never happened
