Why didn't Japan Attack the Soviet Union in World War 2?

Why didn't Japan Attack the Soviet Union in World War 2? The Imperial Japanese Army had serious logistical problems in supplying and sustaining long range campaigns away from the coastal regions or areas where train transportation was unavailable. Motorised transport production in Japan during WW2 was really low when compared with other major powers. Animal-drawn two-wheeled carts were common equipment of the Japanese Transport Regiment. The IJAs inability to conquer much of Central and Western China from 1937 to 1941 were good examples of its shortcomings in land transport. If Japan attacked the Soviets in the vast Soviet Far East, it would have supply line many times the length of that for the Wehrmarcht in the Eastern Front. It was simply impossible.\r\n

Because of Japan-s humiliating defeat in the Nomonhan Incident in 1939, Japanese leaders came to realize Japan-s military weakness and industrial backwardness. In addition, conclusion of Russo-German Nonaggression Pact, it would be unrealistic and even suicidal for Japan to go to war against the Soviet Union. However, it was also reckless attempt to declare war against even stronger the United States. Imperial Japan should have maintained friendly relations with the United States at the sacrifice of her vested interests in China, and then she would avoid being nuked.

Answer: Japan had its hands full with China and then the US. They knew the Soviets were not going to attack them because they were fighting for their lives against the Germans. It was only towards the end of the war when Japan and Germany was basically defeated that the Soviets saw an opportunity for some land grab that they declared war on Japan.

I wonder how the Cold War would-ve been if Japan would-ve attacked the Soviets would-ve taken longer to defeat Germany allowing the United States and the allies to gain more control of Europe the Soviets would-ve been further positioned from Japan in 1945 potentially letting the United States have more time and not need the atomic bomb

Nothing discussed abt USA actually blocking oil supplies to japan forced Japan to attack USA n then Germany to declare war on America. Dats wat allies do, Japan w/o oil supplies wud date not enter soviet. If dat, wasn't the case, USSR cudnt hav been able to fight on both sides, America wudnt gav formally joined dat war.

The one and only reason the USA dropped the nukes on Japan was to scare off the Soviet Union which was planning and ready to invade and take over Japan after defeating Germany.
Hundreds of thousands of Japanese civilians were just sacrifices in a political game.

reply

spot on, but you forgot how to mention that despite Germany invading the USSR, the USSR was sending soldiers and equipment to the far east and made plans against Japan if they did invade. the USSR was ready to go to war against Japan before WW2 started

One of the most accurate WW2 Pearl Harbor movies is Tora Tora Tora, my great grandfather was on the USS Attu in Pearl on Dec 7th and he said that it was the most accurate depiction of both sides of the attack

Good thing this never happened, but if Japan didn't attack the USA, or China, they could've forced the Soviets on fighting a two front war which would probably lead to the Soviets losing the war.

the Japanese didn't participate in military operations in Europe.
the English would have lost the Battle of Britain if the Zeros were operational in France.
Zeros had a better range.

After Germany's capitulate and the atom bombs had been dropped, USSR attacked Japan and captured about 1 million Japanese soldiers. So Japan had no choice than capitulate too

Also why you don't talk about that USSR all time invaded by Nazi Germany had a big amount of soldiers in the Far East to prevent Japanese attack.

Becausw they wanted to go directly to the stronger opponent and prove they are worth as empire but hit the wall and now they are usa biaches
reply

hard to call it a humiliating failure when Germany killed 80% of all men in the USSR despite the heavy military aid the allies gave them
reply

There was no oil or other resources that the Nips could easily grab in Eastern USSR, beside they were beaten badly by the USSR in 1939
reply

The reason why Japan didn-t attacked the Soviet Union is because auf Richard Sorge, master spy of the Soviet Union!
reply

If japan had attacked the USSR in force it probably would have provided the relief needed to Germany to take Moscow
