Have you ever felt that if you were smarter, you would have fewer problems in your life? Weve all wished for some more intelligence when we got a bad grade or made a dumb mistake. But did you know that high intelligence can cause its own problems? If you can relate to these struggles, you're probably smarter than you realize. Are you smarter than most people? Find out here

Warning: Existentialism. Also sort of nihilism? Only adding the warning just in case this triggers thoughts of that nature.
I've always felt like I was shoved into a meat suit and forced to attempt survival until my inevitable end while being unfortunately aware of this. I always feel a sort of detachment from reality. Nothing I can do will matter when the heat death of the universe wipes clean its remains, but hey, the journey is an interesting experience that's worthwhile in that the alternative is incredibly pointless. I'm basically forced to exist. I don't even know what'll happen when I meet my end. I guess it doesn't matter, since I can't do anything about any of it. Not saying I don't love video games and good food and other endorphin/ dopamine releasing activities, but ultimately it is just chemical processes designed to keep my being alive. It's even weirder thinking that my entire body is made up of cells and microorganisms. Even my hair is alive. Of course I'm not above any other human, but sometimes I feel like I think similar to a cosmic overlord or third-party observer in a science fiction novel. That's not too bad of a fate to me honestly- cosmic overlords can be humorous. I just wanted to share my thoughts since I feel like there'll never be a good moment to share this. I guess I kind of hope no one reads it, but I also don't? It's complicated.

This video is actually really well explained. Literally all of these points are things I've experienced. Especially 'being labeled as gifted', since people always think I take it as a compliment if they say I'm smart when it only adds up to the pressure. Like when I have a worse grade than I'd normally have my mom and dad sound disappointed, but if my sister had a bad grade, they'd understand it and comfort her. The point about not being able to explain yourself is also painfully relatable. When my IQ was tested (it happened during elementary school so it might changed idk how that works tbh) the results came out as 134 meaning I'm (idk how you say that in English. In Dutch we'd say 'highly intelligent', but anyways, they said it was completely normal to feel that way. Sorry for the way too long comment and if my English is bad, I'm kinda tired at the moment (oh and peacefully and happily alone by myself)

For me my expectations are set by myself and Ive been supported by those around me, telling me their proud and that that latest test I just need to go back and study. Whenever I see something different than the range Im used to I constantly get nervous, sort of berating myself and pointing out my obvious mistakes. It makes me feel a little selfish because nobody even told me I had to be perfect, I just set myself up and now Im complaining about a grade that shouldnt even make me feel this way. Im trying to get better by telling myself that me recognizing my mistakes means Ive learned, Im still passing, and that others are struggling more so i should just keep going. Im trying not to let myself be my own downfall.

orrrr sometimes you have expectations of yourself that may be higher than someone else has - so like - let's say you got 83/100 on a test. You might feel that's bad for your standards and what you want to achieve - so you might be like, oh I wish I got a better mark
Your friend might have got like 62/100 and they're happy so you're like Oh well done! That's good, I'm sure you'll do even better next time
butttt your friend's just there like pls shut up how u gonna go tell me that mines good and then say that, you're so annoying
like okay what do you want me to say, yeah you suck
and im like okay i get that it can be annoying but ur goals and my goals are different chill

I have been smart all my life (saying that sentence feels rude to say so I dont mean to offend) and I realate to all these on a daily basis, I am often the only doing nothing because I cannot think which is more productive, I am often alone at school as many cannot relate to me, and getting even 4 marks below full has made me cry before as I am held up to high expectations so I always tell everyone that says Im lucky to be smart, that they should be happy with who they are because being smart as illustrated by this video Id not always a gift but sometimes a burden.

i always feel like I shouldn't be proud of what i achive because other people did bad on the tests. I think what I do is good because it doesn't make those people feel worse about themselves, but I'm still sad that I don't have a space where I can share my achievements without others judging me as arrogant or them being jealous. back then I used to have a lot of self esteem and I always showed how happy I was with my achievements but I could see how it made everyone around me upset. now I learned to hide away because I don't want to cause more damage.

I must be smart, because I can relate to most of the stuff on here. Especially with the impostor thing. A lot of times I feel like I'm destined for a very, very bad failure that will literally ruin my life. That every time I have a success, I'm simply delaying or postponing that failure. And that every time I don't succeed or don't get quite up to what I wanted (e. g, 3/4 instead of 4/4) it makes the failure worse, or speeds up the arrival of that failure. I try too hard, but I can't not try.

I do things differently. I'm smart - and alone - but I am also very lazy so I don't have any true goals. The only thing I want in life is to find peace and to be loving. F the goals that do nothing for this world, if I am going to use my intelligence it will be for something important like Climate Change or figuring out how to live sustainably on another planet. 9-5 office jobs shouldn't be run by people of high intelligence, as they are badly needed in other important areas of life.

I enjoy the attempt at advice for #4 but the problem is you can't be proud of achievements due to the aforementioned high expectations! Even achievements you were once proud of, you can now explain through serendipity, attributing your success toward others. My advice would be to not focus on achievements or reaching a certain standard but whatever task you are pursuing, focus on this task, not the end goal. Life is about the journey, not reaching the end.

another struggle for me is like everybody asks me if its the right answer or if its wrong or if its good or bad and what the asnwer to the question was. It gets really annoying over time and it really bugs me. Im also scared about what school life will be like next year because my sister is really smart and the teachers are going to expect more out of me and im afraid that if im not good enough they will think bad about me.
reply

I think people sometimes lose sight that smart people are still humans like, I don't mean they look at us like gods or something but some people believe that because we are smart we can't make mistakes or something like that, we even believe that we have to be perfect to make that someone proud or when you make a tiny mistake they get all angry and say that you're wasting your potential like we aren't perfect man
reply

I am definitely under a burden of high expectations since Im labeled in the gifted & talented program in my school, Ive excelled at math and science and my science teacher rn isnt helping by telling us that were basically disappointments and failures. With explaining myself its mostly my anxiety, but rn Im going through a problem that I might tell all my friends next year bc I might be more familiar with it.

I hate how people like to invalidate smart people feelings, like I see TikTok by people getting worried to the point of crying becuz they thought they would fail but at the end they always ace the test and people in the comments saying something like i hate people like this like bro what, just becuz this happens it doesnt mean u can trash us, we smart people have problems too not u only.
reply

Its always oh, youre so smart, you can do it. Youre so much smarter than me, you get such good grades. I bet youll get prefect As this year. And I know they mean well but it only makes me feel worse rather than better. Less of a compliment and more of a burden from my perspective. Its nice to see people realizing that compliments can hurt too.

I related to pretty much all of the points (to top of my current overflowing list, I procrastinate) but the last one hit me super hard.
This is WHY I get so frustrated while trying to explain things to my friends. That's why I kind of started talking less. My best friend can barely understand me but I have a feeling it's something else.

reply

The truth is not your friend. It's impossible for me to exaggerate how many times I have prayed to be incorrect, only to be proven right in increasingly painful ways. I fully believe me depression would be far less serious or even nonexistent if I were a fool. That if i were less intelligent, that therapy would be more effective.

For them intelligent people in school, I find a constant struggle (for me at least) is if someone is closer to you than they are to a teacher that could help, they'll ask you, and I'm someone who loves helping people so I worry I'm gonna screw up the answer
I guess this falls into the category of high expectations.

Meh idk. These werent rly relatable. Maybe the high expectations + people not understanding that I'm lazy or that i can find school hard. I have a ling to do list, but i dont care enough to do it. and i am awful at socializing. That is probably ubrelated tho. Analysis paralysis was super relatable.

All of them except first and last. I can think from the perspective of someone who lacks that knowledge, and I'm proud. For the first one though, Like how I said I was proud, I do think I deserve my label as, intelligent, even with my second place spelling bee medal.
reply

6 - Even though you literally struggle with those five points and you know you are smart, you won't say it out loud just because you are afraid that people think you're arrogant or that you're labeling yourself as a smart person to feel better.
reply

the last one happens to me kinda often.
even with things i think are quite simple.
it mainly happens at dance so ik that if i fail to explain something to know that its not my fault (its happened so many times)

Problem: I have an I. Q. of 180 and yet I'm stuck in classes with Idiots who- no shit- Wonder why we have the name road to statehood for an assignment on the journey of a territory turning into a state
reply

Also when this happens -
Me: talking about the really interesting thing I learned in class without realizing Im using an expansive vocabulary
Other person: rolls eyes we get it youre smart

reply

The last one is so true, when you are passionate about something, you form your own perspective on it so its often hard to communicate it to others, even when you have a lot of empathy
