What Landing at the World's Most Dangerous Airport is Like i was there in 2001, dont remember if there was asfalt or not. I remember laughing to myself at some old nepalis praying and almost crying from fear when we took off to Katmandu, when the plane took off i saw at the bottom of the mountain quite a few planes crashed and i realized they werent wrong to be afraid, ill tell you now its the last time i ever use Lukla airport: )

For the world this is the most dangerous airport. With in Nepal this is still quite good ( don't get me wrong, this is as dangerous as it can get) compared to a lot of other airports up in the mountains which are not as famous as this one. For starters see -Talcha airport -in mugu. The whole mountain top is the only runway which is a dirt track.

There's a phrase that pilots use, -you can always go around. - This is true as long as you have enough fuel, which shouldn't be a problem if you plan properly. Eliminating the option of a go-around is probably the most dangerous factor at Lukla Airport, especially since arriving and departing traffic flow in opposite directions!

I realize this airport isn't the safest, but I'm still going on an EBC trek in 2023, and will be flying from Kathmandu into Lukla. - From what others have said, the scenery is so beautiful that you almost forget to be afraid. --

If you're not a climber and want to scare the crap out of yourself. Try Honduras. OMG that was a crazy airport. Smack in the middle of a city. As in the runaway is completely surrounded by houses and buildings. 0 room for error

There are many airstrips in the mountains inland in Indonesia where you need to be certified for the individual strip to be allowed to take off/land on it because they're so technically difficult.

I actually thought he was gonna tell some damn crazy story of a pilot who emergency crash-landed here anyway despite its restrictions on a commercial airliner without any casualties. But I guess not.
reply

I can't imagine surviving being the pilot and only survivor of a crash that killed 18 people knowing that it was at least partially your own fault. That guilt would probably kill me.

Given that it's only flights are from an airport 87 Miles away, why does it even have flights at all? 87 Miles is an easily driveable distancel; unless the roads are impassible?

The transition to the sponsor should have been: The pilots are damn good at what they do, but, no matter how great a pilot is, nobody is as good as curiositystream

How about the Paro International Airport in Bhutan? I hear it-s so difficult that only 15 pilots in the world have the certification to land there.

i have no idea of engineeering but it absolutely seems to me some kind of bridge-like vital meters platform could been built here

This is like trying to make a living off that land in the Everglades you got scammed into buying. .And kinda succeeding.

The airport in Dutch Harbor also sucks. You have to drop quickly for a narrow runway. I always disliked it.

5: 28 that would be an absolutely terrifying way to go out, sliding down a mountain in a plane to your death

You gotta see the -Worst Places to be a pilot- bush runways of Papua Indonesia. They make Lukla look easy

this is why when you visit nepal you should land in india then buy a plane to nepal more expensive but safer
reply

I've landed here on a plane a few years back to trek to EBC. Can confirm that the landing was terrifying -
