Lol the USSR produced and distributed computers in the 80's without propietary software/hardware, in that timeline open source would be more popular (a lot of things runs GNU Linux) as well as non-retarded medical systems would be more popular in the US internet.

USSR could have gone the Chinese route of doing things, even though it would need generations of genius leadership. They have only limited control over the internet, but they probably would not fall to rebels either.
