When the whole world is hypnotized by an unexplained celestial event, a young boy must face his fear of the unknown in order to keep his brother and best friend from turning to the other side. Midnight Marathon by Jonah Haber & Stefan Vucic Director's Statement: Inspired by the movies our parents showed us (80s Spielberg, The Iron Giant, etc, Stefan (the writer) and I wanted to make a coming of age story that mirrored some of our experiences growing up in a film that we might have watched during that stage in our lives. - Jonah Haber Director's Links: #SciFi #DUST #ShortFilm

A bunch of shows growing up for myself were 30min shows. For that 30 min show, 10 mins was dedicated to commercial ads. Yes there were hour programs, still 20 min content and 10 min commercial ads.
I one of the aspects I enjoy from the content on Dust is the short story element. Creators can create content with points of view, to help you to think, outside of your perspective; briefly.
The platform also has longer content with more story & character development.
I enjoyed it for a story of finding your own identity, facing fears and the journey in that.

Hm, lets grab my checklist here.
This event takes place in the 90s,
you have people telling you to look at the moon,
there is an emergency broadcast interruption about people behaving weird by looking at the moon,
and the emergency was claimed as a hoax while it isn't.
Nehh, I've never heard of something similar like that.

reply

I love how the characters explain what's happening instead of acting so weird in front of other. Like when Chuck asks the protagonist whats going on after he wakes up.
In any Hollywood movie he would just panic and tell him to stay indoors. But he explained that Mr Schummacher called.

Nostalgic, tweenaged sci-fi adventure. Pure gold if you're the right age (i. e. mine, especially 'It was the ghost of a giant man-eating alien' straight out of the boy's own imagination.
Just ignore the anachronisms (no VCR, and isn't the Volvo a 960 estate)

I thought that was Paul Logan as Captain Commander. He and Nicholas Grimes could be brothers. We need more of this! What does the moon do to them besides put them in a trance The music is great, loved the end instrumental. Too bad it was cut off.
reply

It's not Captain Commander you need to watch, it's Skyrim you need to play, and then you'll know what you must do: put a basket over their head. Of course if that doesn't work you can still try the back-up plan. an arrow to the knee!

I've been binge watching Dust off & on for the last couple of days, & I am really getting tired of what I call pitch shorts that have no ending. If you are going to spend all that money at least tell an entire story!
reply

Anyone else find these DUST film nuggets confusing as hell. It’s like the actors are the only ones let in on the full script, and we get to see one scene! For god sake a beginning middle and end would be nice!
reply

You look at the moon and become a complete zombie and stare at it unwaveringly. unless you're a journalist, then you get on the air and tell others to look at it Seems like a journalism career recruitment video.
reply

Seems to me to be a similarity with the 2009 V series where everyone was caught in the rapture when hypnotized by the Reptile alien Queen. The show was cancelled so we didn't know what happened either!
reply

Excellent! All the young actors were exceptional. I haven't seen Local 58 that some are talking about but I love these short when they can develop a story and characters so quickly, just excellent!
reply

Does anyone else feel as though this is local 58 It has the same vibe all around it. I wonder if Kris Straub (hope spell that right, the creator of Local 58, had something to do with this.
reply

I strangely noticed the similarity of the plot of this film to Local58 and decided to come to the comments to check if I'm not delusional. And yep, it really is Local58, but in 3rd person.

And when the first ray of sunshine hit their eyes something miraculous happened, dna was rewritten and slow but sure the human race obtained common curtesy for their fellow neighbors.
reply

Was pretty good up until the end. Sort of ready to barf with surge in 80's nostalgia with the same type of geek patrol kids having to save the world though.
reply

So this is what Local 58 was trying to warn us about oh well think I'll go stare at the moon its looking really big and bright out for so reason.
reply

I especially like how the kids are driving down the extra dark moonless road at 11: 16. to run away. from. the moon. So, yeah, there's that.
reply

When i grew up i could have used some Captain Commander advise, too. In the end i survived until Dawn anyway, so. sunlight is all that matters; )

To console the video game players that the time they are wasting in playing the games will really be useful to them in future. :P: D: D
reply

Why do these sci fi flicks never have an ending! None of them do they all leave you hanging. Why go through good production to just putter out
reply

This was by far the worst short I've seen on DUST to date. Basically everything sucked - premise, idea, execution, dialogues, etc.
reply

Y'know. Now I kinda wish Stranger Things was more like Black Mirror.
Anthology style.
Oh well, it's a good thing I have DUST!

reply

slow to start, feels like a long plod only to be left unconcluded. I feel dirty like I've read a early Stephen King novel.
reply

Nooo. I do not think this movie should have ended there. I guess I will have to write the ending in my imagination.
reply

if looking at the moon makes you a frozen state zombie. how did all the TV people keep the ability to talk
reply

There's a snow storm happening, yet they can see the moon Am I missing something That shouldn't be possible.
reply

The short lost me when the kids all came to dinner at the same time without being yelled at ten times.
reply

That's the credit card guy
We just need those 16 digits and those numbers on the back

reply

Nice work
You have packed a lot of story in this 18 minute video.
Thank you

reply

Dammit I thought I blocked dust and these garbage ridiculously short dumb movies
reply

I saw one of those 2 sentence horror stories (or something) with a similar premise.
reply

I don't understand how someone can see properly with their hair over their eyes
reply

That seemed like it was the first 20 minutes of a full length film. Where's the rest
reply

I like how in front of the parents the older brother was supportive.
reply

Awesome short!
And that older brother reminds me of Jessie Pinkman.
