In a desolate time we visit Sofugan Island, an Island that was once famous for providing the mainland with the valuable meat of colossal mutated whales, known as Monjus. Monju Hunters of Sofugan Island by Dirk Wachsmuth & Karim Eich Connect with the Filmmakers: More About Monju Hunters of Sofugan Island: In a desolate time, we visit Sofugan Island, an Island that was once famous for providing the mainland with the valuable meat of colossal mutated whales, known as Monjus. Overpopulated and for long times unsupervised it was home to a wild mix of the infamous Monju Hunters, merchants, craftsmen, junk dealers, political persecuted, criminals and adventurers. Our protagonist, an old and experienced hunter who spend his whole life here, tells us about his past. He lets us accompany him through his day and gives us an understanding of the life in this extremophilic society. Monju Hunters of Sofugan Island

The music is absolutely perfect. It brings us here, to this place, to this time. A glimpse of growing old in our futures - not left behind, but content.
My granddad fought in WWII and is still alive. He passes his days in a tiny town, reading new books and watching old movies. I wonder if this is a little what it is like, for him, and if it will be like that, for me.

would love to see this as a movie. this made a superb intro of an old man who is wanting to be done and after that he gets a distress call from someone trying to catch one of those whale things on sonar would love to see this old man go out in a blaze rather than wasting away in a city of echo's and rust.

love the melancolic feeling this captures, i always like storys about the last humans of a society. I wrote a short story many years ago about an old man, the last human survivor in the universe as he shuts down all his ship colony systems and it falls into the black hole it was farming energy from.

Karma is soul - Soul is Karma - seeing something like this makes me try harder in consciousness to rid soul of mind - to accept the fate of the unknown rather than hang tight to any of the old ways. - Yesterday was the sin of our collective whole. Yet how many still want to remain in its wreckage.

WoW! very nice tale of the last person, Omega!

If someone had the inspiration, another tale would be of one of those that rode those ferries up. is it true that there is a new world or was it another govt failing/trap what hardships/dangers did they encounter

There is more in this 9 minutes then most of Hollywoods crappy 2 hour movies. Great atmospheric tension with mesmerizing artistic conceptions, despair, longing, hope and compassion all wrapped up in this little vignette. Outstanding.

It's beautiful and well written but why does the narrator speak with an English accent The story is clearly that of an Asian person. I suppose I'd just feel more connected to the story if the narrator had an Asian accent.

A city / w/is a ferry so large no one realizes they're on it or a part of it. And it just happens to resemble a giant robot person. this sounds like the diary of a gal stone. Lol. . or mitochondria.

Well done. In such a short presentation, you feel this old man down to his soul and understand his peace of a life well spent and his satisfaction of life and see that he is kind and non-judgmental.
reply

Oh, so this what happened to Earth. Those people on the ferries are certainly going to have an interesting life, hunting for vaults and all. I don't know if they will necessarily be happy though.

Everything was great but I wonder if the high contrast outlines were not out of place. It keep gnawing at me reminding me that it was not a relatable story but rather a artificial illustration.

It's really aggrevating that DUST films are only 10-15min long. Some of them are great at the length, but so many others require longer running time to further explore the storylines.

I really liked the art, dialogue, musical composition and story in this, very refreshing yet feeling familiar in how we drift through this monologue.
Great!

This is just one of the wonderful stories we get from Dust, thank you all so much, from one of your friends in Australia. Douglas MacArthur (yes my real name)

Note the creators: Dirk Wachsmuth & Karim Eich.
Some of the others I really didn't like, so I want to remember those I did like.

Now 2022 this will be life in twenty years if we don’t have our mad men leaders blow us all to kingdom come first!

Strange that our culture has so many dystopian visions of the future and so few that reflect our true abundant reality.

This was amazing. Such a beautifully rendered bleak world. In all the cold metal and rust, there was still warmth.

9: 04 minutes of being swept away on something which very closely resemblances perfection. Wow, what a ride!

getting left behind has to be one of the worst feelings in the world. Even worse when you can't blame them for going

This was very interesting, and very unusual. Nothing happened, and yet I was captivated and left wanting more.

I love this. You have to figure out how to take this and make it into a post-apoc survival game.
