Set in the near future, a thirteen-year-old girl plays a deadly game of cat and mouse in a world where overpopulation has caused for a desperate law that forces citizens to kill their designated 'Soulmate'. Soulmate by Nik Kacevski Connect with the Filmmakers: More About Soulmate: Thirteen-year-old Mila Malinov wakes up alone in the back of a cab. Arriving at the densely packed apartment block of zone 21, she makes her way to her room as the watchful eye of the global government hovers above in the form of monitor drones. Across the courtyard, another set of eyes watches her, a protective Mother. Her room is small, cubed, and very simplistic. In her ear, a voice keeps her company. Her father, Darko Malinov checks in. He speaks to her through an earpiece making sure she’s okay. The next day, Mila visits the local bartering station that’s at the end of the long alley that hugs her apartment block. Currency in this world has resorted back to bartering, swapping items for other items. Mila finds a group of interested buyers and swaps a capacitor for some food, all while her father guides her. That night, she shares a meal with her father via voice, wishing that he was there instead. As Mila sleeps, a figure sneaks up to her door making Mila nervous. The next day, Mila maintains her routine, heading through the same alley and back to the bartering station. This time, she runs into the Mother from earlier. The two stare each other down. Mila rushes off uncomfortably, but not before the Mother notices the earpiece in her ear. Her father prepares her for the next day reminding her to bring the bags of oranges. As instructed, Mile steps outside again, this time a lot more nervous than before. She likes the idea of her father watching over her, but she must do this alone. At the end of the alleyway, the bartering station is gone. Packed up and removed. Having learned her routine, the Mother waits for Mila instead. She attacks her, removing her earpiece as Mila runs off with her bags of oranges in hand. In the rush, she trips and falls as the Mother catches up. She grabs Mila and holds onto her tightly. The Mother calls over her son who waits for Mila across the other side of the alley. Pulling out a handgun, the Mother begs her son to get it over and done with and kill Mila. The boy can’t do it and freezes. Mila has other ideas. This entire thing was part of Mila’s plan. She snaps the Mother’s finger and pushes her knee into her nose breaking it immediately. She runs after the boy. The tables have turned. Finding the boy hiding in a large concrete pipe, she throws him out and beats him down as a group of onlookers watch in fascination. Mila doesn’t stop until the boy’s face is pummelled in. She is victorious. The drones that hover above quickly descend and scan both the boy and Mila. They confirm that the boy is Mila’s designation and that she has successfully committed an act of balance, restoring her citizenship. She can now live life without fear. Through the crowd, Mila sees her father. Finally, they can be together as they embrace. Behind them, the crowd cheers celebrating her victory as the Mother holds her dead son. Soulmate

I believe this world in this short film will lead to extinction of the human race. If you don’t fix the root cause of the problem. Which is resource scarcity brought on by a corrupt monetary system, it will never get solved. Killing off the demographic population which can contribute to society like the youth particularly will be counterproductive to solving the problem. The reason why the human race survived thousands of years ago is because we protect our most valuable resource, which was us. I wonder who was manipulating and controlling this world to benefit the few over the many for their own gain.

Hate to be the picky, cynical voice, but there are so few people even now who find their soul mates that that society could've restricted folks to ONLY pairing with them & the population would drop like a stone. I also wondered by what miraculous means The System found the soul mates. mega computer program Genetic testing A Magic 8 Ball Those gripes aside, it was a fascinating and grim dystopian idea, & the young actress was terrific. The setting was perfect for the tone of the film, also.

Huge thanks to Dust for featuring our film. The story of SOULMATE was triggered by personal childhood trauma growing up in a violent youth environment with a strict Eastern European upbringing. The making of this film became a therapeutic exploration of fear and strength. Shot in the Bulgarian winter, I wrote and directed this short film as an introduction to the larger story I have been developing into a series. I am more than happy to answer any questions.

Thirteen-year-old Mila Malinov seems to be a little bit older and looks well. quite developed. But this is not a problem. Not at all. The actress is great for the role, just perfect match! The Red Hat idea is brilliant too. I wonder who designed this red hat costume Was it film director's idea or Holly May Lewis suddenly decided to add this little detail Or it was common decision Please, answer me! It's really interesting to know.

Choose one of the following:
1) Overpopulation (not a solution)
2) Forced curbing of reproduction.
3) Successful non forced curbing of reproduction. (This should then after application prove to be
successful or stricken from the list of available options)
If people have more options resulting in different outcomes, please reply.

I was really enjoying it until the f bomb. Of course I shut it off immediatly. Why do the producers of the vids imagine filthy language enhances the writing, production and directing It just reveals laziness coupled with a sophomoric, middle-school world-view. What a turn off.

Although violent AND horrific, both genres I abhor, the whole movie is perfectly made, the acting is OK and the ideas are original and at the same time, it is made as it seems possible and realistic Thus: a quite perfect movie. Thank you.

In Britain, the Redcap was a type of murderous goblin that lived where violence had taken place and was known for soaking its cap in the blood of its victims. Wonder what the symbolism was in this disturbing but thought-provoking film
reply

oh please. what we have bocome are the very slaves they want us to be, murdering each other for nothing rather than murdering them for their corruption and criminality! How dare you put forth propaganda!
reply

Hmmm. I know you're not really suppose to ponder the logic of these things, but you'd think in a scenario of overpopulation instead of kids killing kids to restore balance there are much more logical solutions. ;-)

I hope y'all viewers have the wherewithal to comprehend what films like this are for. You are being subtly programmed to view bloodthirsty violence as something necessary and good for human survival.

What in the hell is this Is someone trying to get the attention of Netflix by exploiting children Showing a child being to death go way beyond anything that should be shown. My God have mercy on your soul.

What's the white sedan that is shown right in the starting scenes
I adore cars and got curious about it. I don't even know if it's a real car or just some creative CG. But I liked it.

This was really dark and brutal.
The best thing: this story is complete- it has intro, the meat, and the conclusion. AND there's enough space to expand it.
Great work!

Sparta in modern times. But in Sparta, the target helots had no chance at citizenship. It's like Karl Marx and Bill Gates had a fantasy love child. Kinda sick, kinda. funny.

Demasiado impactante, imposible llevarla al cine, un poco irreal, si la madre sabia el destino de su hijo no hubiera dudado en disparar mucho antes del contacto

im wondering why people just don't oh I don't know use bombs to take out some of the population but no thats too easy lets just turn the world into bounty hunter

I never think Bulgaria as a distopian sci-fi scene - but totally fit into the list of much more mainstream locations. Greetings from the other side of Eastern Europe.

Dust is my special. The future is the only thing. Some in the past are not right. Repo video. But nice anyways. Best videos. Good bad. Happy.
reply

I like it. But. But what we have become. Denies the truth of what we already are. If you deny the monster you are, you risk it getting loose.
reply

A compelling, disturbing, deeply thought-provoking story brilliantly executed. Easily one of the best of the dozens of Dust videos I've watched.

My god I had to turn that off before the end, showing that violence against a kid. That’s not right. There should be a warning!

Humanity lost in this, a better outcome would be to realise who the real enemy is & defeat those who put you against your fellow man.
reply

Sick movie, to sacrifice your soulmate for self preservation is pure evil. But it is a well made short film.

La Femme Nikita: The Teen Years --- phenomenal actress, Oscar worthy performance. I hope we see more of her!

I am also a survivor of childhood trauma. This was painful to watch. But there are truths here.

The government designed a program of 'saving' humanity by making people lose their humanity.

Survival of the fittest; mind, body, and Soul. Well done and produced from experiences.
reply

Have a horrible notion that there are those in power that would love to see this happen
reply

Excellent. Heads up for those with children. 8 billion people and counting! Yep. I'm just saying.
reply

Too bad there had to be so much narrator exposition at the end to actually tell the story

If Marvel reboots The New Mutants, she would be a great pick to play Illyana/Magik.
reply

That was too Dark! It would be better to go after the government and eliminate them!
