I see there are a lot of people in the comments confusing Microsoft's (or Sony's or Nintendo's) servers with the network card built into the console. I don't necessarily want to use all of the extra services or play a first party title. Third party titles generally use their own servers, not the servers of the first party. But I still have to pay for the privilege even when I'm not using first party servers. On PC, I don't pay anything extra to access my network card. I've also got access to all of the same features as consoles.
It's also gotten to the point where online access is really a footnote anyways - I'm told time and time again these plans have overwhelming amount of value. Okay, so if they have so much value, why can't they rely on that value to keep people hooked? Why is it so important that they keep this footnote of a feature in the package if it's got so much value?

my frustration came from the Xbox 360 and PS3 days. At the time I was competing in Marvel vs Capcom 3 tournaments and showing up to a tournament and seeing what the council of choice was for that tournament could be frustrating for many players. I had an Xbox 360 arcade stick because I played on Xbox so showing up to a PS3 event was always difficult. It got to the point where many of us were using converters to play on opposite systems whether it was Xbox to PlayStation or Playstation to Xbox. It wasn't until I eventually dual-modded my arcade stick that it no longer mattered and I can plug into any console. nowadays it's so easy to just buy a stick that's already compatible with everything.

Wireless controllers are certainly convenient but most of the time I play with them plugged into the console (with a 3 foot usb extension cord, so I still have plenty of freedom of movement) but trying to find replacements for older controllers is the absolute worst. The few authentic PS3 controllers I've over paid for on eBay or Amazon are always a rip off and most of the third party ones are over priced trash. I'll never understand why companies like Sony don't continue selling legit controllers that still have an obvious market, I'd be willing to pay full price for a new PS3 controller that actually works: /

10yrs ago I started drifting away from PC gaming and got back into consoles, mainly PlayStation. I've never had any major issues with any of these (although my PS2 sounds like a jet engine the second I fire it up. Except paying for online play. That's pretty sucky, although I guess I've had my money's worth from PS Plus over the years. And I'm certainly proud of having every (early version) PlayStation under my TV. Even if they very rarely get used these days, especially as my new fangled TV that's excellent for PS5 doesn't have support for PS/PS2 as standard. Really need to figure that one out.

Elden Ring is the only game that causes my ps5 to be noisy.
You should keep your old platforms, emulation doesn t quite cut it sometimes.
A lot of these are self created problems, gaming is expensive and time consuming. For the longest time you couldn t get that 500, 2000 dollar GPU. So no, upgrading a pc can be just as tedious. Who struggled with screwing in a SSD?
The only point that has legs in this list is mods. That s it, the rest are personal problems, most I haven t experienced. I own a monster pC, all 3 current consoles and almost all gems back to the Atari 2600.

I'm not sure I get #3. If you crunch the numbers in the example for Playstation: (2022-1994)/5=5. 6 So we're talking almost 6 years on average between console releases. That sounds like plenty of time. Sure, there are the half-gen updates, but they're not required to play your games.
I suppose starting fresh with your game library is annoying, but it sounds like the situation is improving. Although I should note that the Switch is the first console I've owned personally, so I've not had to deal with that yet.

So in 1996 we started getting consoles with wirelessly controllers? Or did that not happen until way later? Ijs, they still sell wired controllers my dude your controllers only die fast when you don t charge them correctly. I ve been good for about5-6 hours of gaming on my ps4-5 controllers. Then it s time to plug it in and charge while you continue. After about an hour you re good to go for another couple hours of gaming. Ijs some of these gripes are just people never had dial up or forgot what it was like

I got permanently banned on playstation for cussing without any warnings lost all the games I bought. playstation removed the community feature which was horrible. Ps plus is annoying. Like I bought my playstation and the game and now I have to pay a subscription fee just to play it. The whole exclusive game thing is horrible for both consoles. I know skyrim and fallout 4 are a little old but people still play them and playstation not allowing custom mods make the games worse.

I like consoles cause I spend a lot of time working behind a PC so whenever I want to relax sitting at a console helps a lot in it completely gets me out of the work mindset. It s like it just takes longer for me to unwind when sitting in front of a PC and sometimes I ll end up working instead of relaxing because the lure of I could work on that thing I didn t finish today is super easy to fall for when I know it s just a click away.
