10 video game genres that have vanished
video description
Oh, and Arena shooters? Those are just Battle Royales now. Fortnite is the evolution of Quake. That's a sad sentence to write lol.

I enjoyed playing Arena Shooters for awhile. They were just fun. You didn't need to have strategy or anything like that. I still remember playing Turok 2 with friends back in the day and there was this particular weapon that we all tried to get because it was OP in that game. The weapons damage kind of sucked; but it would electrocute anyone that got hit by it. Best part was for that version of the game the shots would bounce off walls. The last arena shooter I played though was a game called Toxikk which I think is still going on. I really enjoyed that game; but there wasn't much of a player base. I even tried to get my friends to play it; which they did for an hour. Their reasoning behind not getting into it was because it didn't take strategy and you didn't need to think just to play it.

The sole reason I have kept my PS3 is RockBand/GuitarHero. I still spend a few hours a month shredding. Two years ago I went on a quest for all the odds titles i originally looked over, and scored many used at pennies per. I feel the lack of controller backwards compatibility of the genre to the PS4 made fans realize it was time to move on. The genre was on the slide; investing in a new bundle of peripherals for that next gen just didn't make sense. Guitar Hero Live was the nail in the coffin. UGH. But for the PS3, it's a time capsule that still stays with me.
STEEP was the last great extreme sports release.

Beat'em Ups. I miss oldschool beat'em ups like Fighting Force. We got Streets of Rage 4 a few years back and that is an awesome game, but i wish we would get more 3D style classic beat'em ups. You could say the Spiderman, Batman games are beat'em ups, just evolved, but i would disagree, those games are way too open. What i imagine is something like Devil May Cry, with linear levels with secrets and fun combat. Actually, Sleeping Dogs had fantastic combat, and now that has reminded me of Sifu, i have to try that game, it might be just what im looking for. Still, we need more 3D beat'em ups.

I am Happy that I was born at the end of 1979 and been able to play the ATARI and Nintendo, Sega, 3D0 and many other consoles and PC games. Great times, ordering Pizza, playing 4 player Golden Eye 64 after school. Loved my Dreamcast and still own a lot of old Consoles. I still have a 3D0 boxed up in mint condition.
Gaming is my past time and how I unwind after a long week of work.
My daughters and Wife are also gamers. Anyways. Great video and this brought a lot of memories of my younger years.
I am not ashamed but I had Plumbers don't Wear Ties on 3D0 lmao.

I would love if they remade Command and Conquer with updated graphics for the newest gen consoles (specifically Tiberian Sun as it was my fav and was never made for consoles. That and I miss Warcraft 3 a lot. WoW just never quite hard that same charm as 3 did. I would love to add another game to your #6 list. Dance Dance Revolution. Man the days of going to the arcade and everyone crowding around the platform to get a chance to face off with other ppl was so much fun. I used to have the at home version they made for the PS2.

The saddest part of the strategy game genre was, that like every big IP had licensed games and all were great beside Alien/Alien vs Predator. they sucked so much, the best AvP rts game sadly was star craft/brood war/sc2 playing zerg vs protoss lol
/edit: especially alien, predator and the AvP ip never got any great game at all. they have one of the sickest art styles and creatures but all of those games were just bad
/edit 2: FIREBUGS on PSone best vehicle combat racer

I mean, RTS did not vanish at all, there are plenty of games in the genre. Age of Empires II is been upgraded constantly since it was released 23 years ago. It's one of the biggest niches there are. The fact that it isn't a big genre among the 13 years old Fortnite kids doesn't mean it has vanished or it doesn't produce quality games anymore.
Better than trash FPS games that are the same and add no value at all to the gaming world.

You forgot about flight sims. Flight simulators, either civilian or combat flight simulation, have become so niche that they are not even mentioned in the video, but they were fairly popular from the early 90s to the early 2000s. And the same goes for other vehicle simulations like submarines, etc. that got even more niche. But we the elder remember a time when Microprose made quite a fortune almost exclusively with all that.

Jake always makes the best content, this video gave me so many nostalgic memories! Banjo-Kazooie was such an amazing game! Rock Band and Guitar Hero dominated my teenage years just jamming with the boys lol. I'm super stoked to see how the new Armored Core VI turns out. Anyways there is too much to comment on here without turning this into a novel, Its a shame some of these genres haven't evolved with the times.

I grew up on command and conquer. when I learned of starcraft i was turned off despite the cool theme of the game. It took my joy of f #%ing around building a base. into a job. you MUST build and attack as fast as possible, no time to think or you lose, become a machine and multi task 4 things at once, no thank you. was too close to how things felt at work, your never fast enough or good enough

I think the hack and slash genre is pretty much gone, there are no games where you can just run through levels mindlessly brutally killing enemies, god of war dumbed that all the way down, I unusual is gone, I think the closest we still have may be bayoneta and devil may cry. Also cool ninja games, why hasn t there been a new tenchu? We got ghost of tshushima but that really is a 1 off

While I know I'm probably showing my age here, however, I miss the collecthon games b/c they were & somewhat still are straightforward, fun & addicting games, the light gun shooters from arcades b/c for me they were the first hands-on games I played in my life & the RFID toys b/c for the reason of the arcade games I personally had the U. B. Funkeys Electronic & Interactive Toys.

One thing to mention about Music/rhythm games is that in the age of streaming/content creation you can't just willy nilly play it since music publisher is breathing heavily down your neck. In fact it's slowly taking over other genres too (e. g. Guardians of the Galaxy) where there's a sequence that the music just cutoff once you're on streaming mode making the scene less impactful.

RTS genre is not dead. Anno 1800, Age of Wonders 4, Company of Heroes 3, plus few more are announced to come out this/next year. Starcraft 2 might have died as e-Sport game here in Europe/USA but it's still very popular game in Asia.
Dunno what I would count games like Frostpunk and Factorio as. Those are games WITH strategic elements in them.
