10 DUMBEST Video Game Controversies NOBODY ASKED FOR ScubaAD: My favorite thing to ask someone, when they talk about video games causing violent behavior. How do they explain all the violent behavior throughout all of human history? Violent books, paintings and cave drawings? Or maybe, we are just a violent species. Also, we are actually in one of the least violent periods of human history. Yes, some crimes are up, like mass shootings in the US (some of which is gang related shootings being reclassified as mass shootings, and we hear a lot more about it, so it feels like things are much worse, but on the whole, homicides and assaults are all down (per capita) compared to decades past. The 70s and 80s was just awful for homicides and violent crime. You know, before people started staying home playing on the NES.

Back when Windwaker came out, that kind of style didn't have the same retro charm it has today because it wasn't really retro, yet. The look had its fans, of course, but to many at that time it felt more outdated than classic. I didn't have a GameCube back then, but I certainly had no patience for 2D games or anything that wasn't at least striving for realism in the early 2000's; I had spent that previous 15 years playing games with blocky, cartoonish graphics because that's all there was, so once it was possible, I wanted something different. Today, we've had so many games with lifelike graphics that its a lot easier to appreciate something stylized like Windwaker.

I think with the Wind Waker ordeal, it wasn't so much the graphics. But fans were criticizing the graphics, however was more turned off by design changes. Like, if you look at other GC gen changes, Mario, Metroid, Starfox; most of those were same designs with more polygon count. Zelda however received the most drastic change, a Link you never seen before, those are moblins, who's this character. Kind of like changing how all the familiar characters looked and putting a fluorescent light shining over it which is going to cause an uproar.
I was even in that skeptical boat when I first saw it on Nintendo Power, but like most came to accept it.

I was in Chicago with my parents back in 1997 or 98 to see Sue the T-Rex Skeleton on exhibit when I was little. My mom owned a truck with a spare tire under the bed and she had it parked against a small hill at the hotel where the truck bed and spare tire were basically kissing the grass and thus cannot be reached. SOMEHOW SOME FREAKING HOW during the night someone managed to steal the spare tire from under the truck parked against a hill! Yeah no Chicago has had a carjacking or something close to it problem WAY BEFORE grand theft auto was even a real big thing.

GTA is starting to sound like Call of Duty. Same sh t, different coat of paint.
There's one controversy that nobody asked for is Atomic Heart. Look into it because it does start conversations with strangers who might have opposing opinions that I don't have the mental stamina to deal with, so I leave it to you.
I know what's up, and I do have an opinion on this topic but it holds no weight because parts of my opinion is missing or been overlooked, so it's not airtight. I'll keep it to myself at this moment because I'm missing some context.

The Olympics saying that violence has no part in it is funny. Fighting is a form a violence, regardless if they carry it on controlled environments just for training or competition, and they have several martial arts in there. Anything digital tends to cross us into a world where we could do things we wouldn't in real life and the eSports community is a proof of it.
I could see them blocking games with some sort of realism or gore that is not suitable for kids, but anything else is just old folks resisting the change. We'll get there.

Wind Waker is a great game for sure. I'm pretty sure people were mad about the style mostly because of the tech demo though. Imagine someone showed you a really cool trailer that looks like Forza, but then the game comes out looking like Mario Kart. The gameplay is good regardless, but the different graphic styles attract different audiences. Naturally the audience hooked by the demo were disappointed to see a game that didn't look at all like what they were led to expect. Luckily for them, they got Twilight Princess after Wind Waker.

I think for the Wind Waker thing, it was more the fact that up to that point, Zelda graphics had been going in the direction of more graphical fidelity. Wind Waker obviously favored stylism. An old school gamer wouldn't be basing his criticism on a comparison of between Wind Waker and the classic Zelda games he was used to, but rather the trend that Wind Waker was obviously bucking. Players for whom Wind Waker would be there first Zelda game obviously wouldn't have noticed the trend.

About Wind Waker and the stylization versus realism brouhaha, it seems to me that stylized art in games - especially smaller and indie games - really took off in the last 10 years or so at the same time that the chase for realism cooled down (i don't have any titles to offer as examples because that side of my brain was eaten by zombies back in the early 2000s, but hopefully you know what i mean. That might be a cool topic for a video - tracking that history a little bit.

Ive always thought the comparison between Esports & actual sports were a joke. No way in hell you can compare severely disciplined people who workout & diet every day, to a bunch of obese nerds who press buttons for 14 hours a day. It takes a week to get good at CoD & a lifetime to become an Olympic medalist. It would be significantly easier for a professional athlete to get good at a video game rather than vice versa. The comparison is just disrespectful lol.

The manhunt ones stills boils my blood to this day. If games like this influence kids, they should be taken off the shelves.
THE GAME IS NOT FOR KIDS. IT IS A 18/MATURE/RATED R CERTIFICATE GAME. why the f-ck is a child playing it? These games are fine, when played by someone 18+, not squishy brain kids. The parents need to be charged with some kind of negligence for buying kids these games.
the amount of kids on GTA V, COD etc. Is ridiculous

I will always believe that the Wind Waker backlash only happened because of the console that it came out on. The Gamecube basically had the reputation of being a kids toy, and the PS2 and XBox were seen as the consoles for the more mature games. It made it tough for anyone over the age of 10 to openly admit that they owned the console. Having one of your most popular game series looking like a Saturday morning cartoon just furthered that narrative.

Number 7 just. isn't a controversy. Nothing was really at stake, nobody was really getting into massive disagreements. The devs just said some weird stuff, and we all moved on.
For number 5, many scientists (among others) use simulations, and people might have thought that this could use its aim towards. you know. simulating how a plague would spread in order to find out how it might spread. Besides, people were desperate for hope back then.

You want to know more about GTA6? Oh that's easy;
GTA6 is an open world, 3rd person action adventure game in which you're free to steal any car and engage the open world as you see fit, but will be EXTREMELY limited in your choices during missions due to Rockstar being so far up their own ass that they need to dictate to the gamer how to have fun. Also, expect microtransactions to be egregious and plentiful.
