All I can say about Dragon Age, is
Good.
I don't want more.
Origins was such a fantastic dark fantasy RPG, it should honestly have been a standalone.
The combat got progressively dumbed down
And each entry to the series felt more like the story just got worse.
I mean, don't get me wrong, the Bioware character writing was still top notch even up to Inquisition, but the setting lost its dark fantasy vibes more and more.
They inserted a lot of gender politics that would never have made sense in the world they set up in Origins.
Like, remember when you had to convince Sten that you're a female warrior, because the Qun didn't have those And then later on, they retconned that into No, half the Qun is trans actually, because genders are assigned by how the child acts instead of what's between their legs
I could bring up a dozen other examples of how Origins' proper medieval, grimdark-esque ideas were either thrown out the window or twisted in later games.
Watching a bunch of reviews and opinion videos on Veilguard and talking to some friends that played it, I honestly am not going to be spending money on half my talking to companions time (which was arguably the best part of the earlier trilogy) being dedicated to listening to the developers using mouthpieces to shove their own disingenuous LGBT catering down my throat.

I think Dragon Age broke the fans more than it did the devs. Bioware fans have been bending over backwards giving the studio excuses and ways out for almost a decade now, and theyve continuously disappointed. This time around is the first time where it feels like the fans stopped trying to do that. When Anthem was a mess, fans were like but the next game will be better. When Andromeda was a mess, fans made the same excuse for Bioware. After Veilguard, I havent seen that same level of enthusiasm or forgiveness. Feels like theyve accepted that Bioware just cant stop fumbling.
Which is funny because Bioware was fumbling long before this, but the products still came out so good that people were willing to forgive the shortcomings. Like the mess ending of ME 3, or that Inquisition also apparently had a rocky development, but the end product was satisfactory.

I see pattern here.
Save for Mirror Edge, every other game here has three things in common: 1) a big budget game (the AAA of their times, b) their sequels try to keep up with being big budget, but 3) they belong in a genre that is not super trendy any more, making their budgets hard to justify.
They could make a Banjo 3 with a very low budget, it would sell 300, 000 copies, it would make 150 millions dollars, but for greedy spooks that's not nearly enough.
Tango better make new IPs. An Evil Within 3 can't possibly live up to expectations, no matter how good it is, because each fan expects something different, and the game would require a big budget, selling only one third of the copies needed to even make a small profit. Instead, they could make a new horror IP, low budget, 50 dollars, moderate sales, big profit.

Im happy Dragon Age is done. I say this as a fan who played the original all the way back in 2010 (i know it released in 2009, thats just when i first played it. This game introduced a whole new world to me in a childhood where i mainly played nintendo games or E rated PC games. I saw blood, gore, but most importantly, great characters, RPG mechanics id never seen before, and an amazing story. I was one of the few people that loved DA2 but after that i just kept getting disappointed. Inquisition was pretty mid to me and Veilguard just put the nail in the coffin for my hopes that this franchise would ever reach those heights again. Bioware now is not bioware, its the abused child that EA has beaten into the dirt and its better to just let it all end here. But thanks for the memories Dragon Age.

I’m so sad that Ubi fumbled Watch Dogs. It’s such an amazing concept. The vigilante watch dogs using an oppressive governments surveillance tech against them set in a modern dystopia. It had SO much potential and I hope another company can pick up where they left off and continue to create great narratives in a similar setting.
Also Mirrors Edge. I think people didn’t like Catalyst because the story was kinda boring, but personally, I never really played Mirrors Edge for the story. The movement was just so well done and so fun to play around in. Wish they’d make more games like it.

I feel like Callisto Protocol is partially to blame for killing Dead Space. You had an original ip Dead Space-like made by the original creators come out a month before Dead Space remake. I think a lot of people (myself included) were torn between supporting an original ip and a remake. It’s just bad luck that Callisto Protocol came out first and completely bombed.
Horror games are already niche and 2 horror games in such a similar vein as these releasing a month apart was just a recipe for failure. EA has grossly mishandled DS for years and it’s just sad. The first 2 games are amazing

I genuinely loved all the dead space games. The first was like a reimagining of system shock. The sequel was more action based but good and even though I hate when games have been forced to include multiplayer when you had friends from around the world party up, the multiplayer was great. If dead space was system shock dead space 3 was quake. A coop game about destroying an Eldritch artifact that violently mutates everything it was great. I made a chainsaw shotgun that could fire chainsaw blades. I didn't pay to do it I was happy to grind resources to make a weapon that wouldn't let me down.

The issue with Dead Space 3 was natural progression. The game was less scary because the main character was use to it at that point. I think Dead Space 3 is great for what it is, but for the game to be scary again. You will have to throw other protagonists at it. Like it makes no sense that someone who is use to doing scary things will continue to be scared. Sadly not every franchise realize this issue. I see a similar issue happening with Resident Evil if they keep going with the same protagonist in the next one. At some point your character is just gonna be over it.

Splinter Cell ain't coming back. This is what's gonna happen: Ubi will do the remake (maybe) and then that will, obviously, sell an incredible amount of copies. Then Ubi will either A) continue remaking old SCs until the studio ultimately collapses, or B) They'll announce a NEW Splinter Cell game but never actually release it (like Beyond Good & Evil 2.
Also, I hate to be that guy, but if you were old enough to play the original Deus Ex, MD and HR were both huge disappointments. Neither of them managed to capture even a whiff of the magic of the original.

Imagine a simple Mirrors Edge using AI generated 3d sandboxes along with a creator mode similar to Halos Forge where you could jump over to editing a map that was generated rather than having to always start from scratch. If that was all it was, no story, no microtransactions, maybe leaderboards and a community section to upload your creations and try out others I'd buy that for 20-30 bucks. Simple things like this I can see AI generated gaming actually having a place rather than intruding on peoples jobs and turning consumers off.

Man, the whole industry is messed up right now.
Big studios and publishers only care about money, to the point that they close successful developers, or force them to make live service games that always flop.
And since they are so money grubbing, they will hold on to IP's, even if they never plan to do anything with them, simply because they hope to sell it.
Honestly, capitalism is ruining another medium. Its so disheartening

reply

Veilguard's characters seem awful, the darkspawn are goofy, and they kept changing what the game was going to be mid development. It was initially going to be a live service or something, then it swapped to a hero shooter, then they wanted a full RPG instead causing the devs to keep changing gears mid production. It's no wonder why it's half baked when they only had a third of their dev time to make it.

i still don't understand people not liking Dead Space 3, i get that it went away from the survival horror aspect, but that makes sense, its the 3rd game, Isaac is no longer freaked out by it anymore, it makes sense it turned into more of an action combat game, i feel like you'd have to have reset things or had another character be introduced to everything going on for the first time

It's so sad that Days Gone wasn't even given the chance to be the trilogy it intended to be. The first game is such a great experience, it's a shame it had such a bad launch and received such negative reviews that Sony basically shut down any possibility of future sequels. I'm seeing a lot of love for the game recently, but I still don't feel it's enough to push them into action.
reply

Something I don't understand is the whole ownership of IPs. A lot of these games had developers want to do more or sequels etc. but the publishers are the reasons for most doing off. Do most developers just sell their IP or do the publishers but the developers
It just ultimately ends up that publishers hold the power and are the root of a number of the problems.

Microsoft and EA are literally killing so many games, it is actually unfair that they have such authority over so much good stuff in gaming world. Yesterday Microsoft killed the DLC for Age of Empires 3 DE, 4 months back they shut down servers to the legacy edition of the game. So many childhood games are being shutdown.

The Saint row crap storm, well to me is the fact they focused to much on a pathetic stereotype of a certain age groups, just do a good damn story don't aim it at certain people, because all that's gonna do is lock that chain around your feet while your near a body of water where you might go to sleep with the fishes.

No sympathy for EA/Dead Space franchise.
Forcing you to create an account for online features which add nothing then the fers shut my account down with no explanation, 3 hours after buying it (total playtime) so couldn't refund it either so left me with an unplayable game on my Steam account library

reply

Other than Deus Ex, I'm pretty much fine with all these series going away. Even if they had great entries, they wore away any good will by either 1) stripping away what made them good in the first place or 2) offering the same experience over and over again without introducing enough new ideas.

Hot take, Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts is a good game, its just not a good Banjo Kazooie game. It would have been better received had they not tried to nostalgia bait fans and made a new franchise using Banjo, Kazooie, and other Rare characters as cameos instead of the main characters.
