Civ 7 is more fun than you'd anticipate, at least that's how I felt after getting used to the game more. Being able to customize the playstyle of the leader gives plenty of replay-ability. The transitioning in Ages is different but is a fun mechanic because it can hurt or help you. Getting attacked and don't see a way to bounce back; it is nullified with the end of an Age. Just try to hold off till end of the Age and your town gets healed as well as units.
My main complaint with the game are trade routes; they can be frustrating to get set up if you're not close enough to another player or city state. Other than trade routes it's game performance and how it clears its resource data cache. I believe it doesn't round off the endless amount of numbers in the digits so it has a long string of numbers to keep up with that slowly builds up too much for the game to handle and has to soft reset or crash midday, should be easy enough to fix. The tutorial complaints are easy negated if you just turn them off.
It takes time to get used to the games UI, but I see this game as being easier to want to replay with how you can customize the leaders and how you want to play them differently each time. Was afraid the button layout would be unfriendly on controller(first Civ on console, previously played Civ 5&6 on PC, but it was easy to get used to quickly after an hour or two(yes it's not perfect but not completely broken either.

I really like the Ages system! It's a bit too barebones, but I feel it's a great foundation. And that goes for a lot of the systems in the game. They have to be fleshed out and polished. As stated in the video, there are a lot of concepts the game namedrops then simply fails to give good information about (and, in parts, it's due to the bad UI. I'm optimistic this will be a great game in a few months.
But still, I'm having a lot of fun playing it, even though the lack of good guidance and some confusing systems (religion, what survives Age transitions etc) result in a lot of trial and error that was probably avoidable.
I've been playing the series since Civ II and, for the most part, it's always like this. The game takes a bit to mature. Comparing the Civ VII of today with the Civ VI of today is a bit unfair because of that. Of course, it's fair to criticize the published for charging high prices for something that might feel unfinished, but this is not the usual Bethesda/Ubisoft (and others) unfinished. It's more like a foundation that works well but still has a lot to develop.

I’ve got about 20 hours or so on 7 now. Long time fan of the franchise. I think at its base this is a Civ game, cities are beautiful and offer new adjacencies and systems to build. Warfare is spiced up with new commander mechanics and cool visuals.
I was originally critical of the new age system and the way leaders are independent from civilizations.
I thought that this feature of 7 would ruin the experience of creating my own version of a civilization from settler to modern super power. I was so concerned about this I almost chose not to buy founders.
I’m a fan, and I want to see the game do well so I did end up grabbing the game. I’m glad that I did, I think it is fun and fresh. I have enjoyed working out good combinations for leaders and civs, how now you have another layer of complexity to how you boost your productions through the ages. If you have the money, 7 is a huge step forward and will only get enriched with more content over time. You’re just missing out on all the new ways to 4e

After 5 hours in and stomaching the terrible UI, I still do not feel that excitement I used to get when playing a civ game the first time. I thought I might be excited about the leader/culture switchup, but I feel like it tried too much and feels disjointed and uninspired. I don't necessarily care about cultural paths my empire wants to take because they feel largely. bland. It just feels like they threw this together because they knew we were expecting something, but I don't feel the sense that this was a passion project. This feels like a consolation in its current form. I went back to play Humankind after playing for some hours and although that game had a very rough launch, the UI and the gameplay experience feels magical in the first couple of eras compared to this civ game that makes me miss its predecessors

Long time Civ player here, finished my first game of Civ VII yesterday and loved it! The addition of influence points and the vast number of ways you can use them was an awesome feature. Although the eras change for all Civs at the same time, you can get some pretty big advantages from being one of the era score leaders. As for UI, I am no graphic designer but I found the UI to be great. I had an easy time navigating the menus and only once felt like I needed more info so I used the in game civepedia to look up treasure fleets and got my answer. I do agree that there needs to be more customizability with the maps but as a first impression CIV VII is a great step up from CIV VI and is potentially as good as CIV V but I’m not making that call after only one game.

tbh it just looks the same ol crap. The past 2 civs have been needing any kind of change of universe. revisit Alpha Centauri Seriously work on good diplomacy, the AI just always feels the same, get pissed at some trivial issue until you goto war theres nothing like while some civs may be weak in military, they have insane manufacturing and therefore can provide critical supplies to others while being neutral and not under constant threat because the AI detects that you have less military and thus MUST conquer. Humankind does this so much better, you can be a mega trade civ that people depend on and they will stay friendly and ignore small slights to civ differences.

Even watching the official world tournament hosted by Friaxis, the age system seems a bit forced. It not only crashed live on stage, reset a player so completely that they lost progression unlocks, and caused confusion. In my opinion, the whole point of Civ is the snowball. If you're not fighting bronze age spearmen with medieval knights, you're playing it wrong. There's a reason I don't play Humanity, and I play Civ. It also seems a bit odd that all players tech up at the same time. So you're telling me the Incans should unlock cannons just because China researched gunpowder I'll pass on Civ 7 and go play my older civs then.

Played civ since civ 2. This is the best in the series. Some UI issues around not giving enough info, some QoL issues like no auto-explore for explorers, some roughness around switching eras. But city growth feels fun and seems like they’ve landed on a fully matured version of what they wanted to do with 6 (6 being the series worst imo. Civ switching isn’t random but is locked into specific civs based on a number of features (wish they allowed it to be truly open. Exploration/settling new lands feels much more rewarding than older games in the series. Industrialization feels better. Overall better game.

Hi all. Recent Civ-like games which are amazing and I can recommend. Age of Wonders 4 (if u are ok with a fantasy setting. In AoW 4 you have actually quite nice city building and in many aspects the game is much better then Civ 6 or Civ 5. You have deeper character/race customisation. Very strategic combat etc. Diplomacy is also better.
The complete package of Humankind is also great imho. Right now its is free on Epic.
Both games you can easily get for 40 Euros or less. Lets not support 2Ks predatory business practice.

Civ continues to fall. Civ II is still my favorite (mostly due to the Test of Time expansion) and I think V was the best overall game. VI frequently felt small despite being a much bigger resource hog and barbarians felt bugged all the time. Sometimes they were a healthy challenge but more often than not they were complete push overs or the most overwhelming force in the game despite using the same settings. VII sounds like it is missing the things I loved the most about the older games. Thank you for the BYB.

Doesnt make sense to play as whoever leader with whatever empire. And it makes even less sense that each age automatically pulls everyone into it. It sounds more like they tried to do something different by letting you do both more of whatever you want and less of what you want.
I mean the leader option is pretty meaningless in the older games. Its superficial. I love playing civ 6 and learning I'm ahead of other empires but theres an empire slightly ahead of me in time. Feels more realistic

The UI is garbo. I'll cede that. But on every other front- momentos, ages, separate civs and leaders, new victory conditions, etc etc etc, are all great, work well and intuitively, and feel good to play with and in. If you like previous games an wanna play them, great! No bone to pick from me. But if you were a Civ 5 junkie who was skeptical about Civ 6 who came around to that game, you'll also come around to this one. I promise.

The game just isn't complete. They've launched in early access & called it the official release. Theres a skeleton list of civs available, a completely busted UI & no large maps.
The civ franchise has always been happy to release a not quite finished game & fix it later, this time they've managed to lower the bar a little further. It'll probably be a fantastic game in a year or two.

Started the series whit civ 2 and bin a big fan but will be holding off on this one for now. After watching lot of reviews begin resulted in mixed or out right bad and somehow getting a feeling that it will be a long list of paied upgrades or DLCs coming I do not think it will be worth it. I might reconsider in a year or two but as of now I will stick to civ 6.

Unfortunately, I bought it today. Definitely thought that this is a Beta due to the UI and the lack of sound on some features like when you finish your turn, there is no sound or alert that is your turn again. Personalizing the map is simple if you compare it to CIV6 and in general it feels. simple. I still will give it a chance to see what's up.

As a player who has almost 2 thousand hours in civ 6 and played since civ 4. I really enjoy this game. Currently play on ps5 as I don’t have a modern pc sadly but really enjoy the game. Really makes it so I want to finish a game and does what they wanted. Deffinitely needs work but overall it’s a great civ game. I give it a 8/10
reply

It’s kind of interesting that your civilization changes over the ages, but I could see myself starting as Han China only to move on to Ming China and then finishing the game as Qing China because I just wanted to play as China. It feels weird to jump from Greece to the Normans and then finish the game as Imperial France.

I am still playing Civilization 3 regularly, but have just upgraded to a current century gaming laptop (okay I was not that far behind but I was way, way behind) I think I would like to upgrade but 7 does not sound like it for me. There seems to be a bunch of Civ fans here so what Civ version do you guys think is best
reply

Playing it myself, it’s a general upgrade. The biggest problem is that the game honestly has a lot of lack of foresight, bugs and poorly developed ideas that make it feel like it was made by a B team who weren’t the 20 years into developing civ guys, but new guys loosely following the civ vets instructions
reply

Price, exclusion of major Civs, ages, switching leaders with Civs they historically didn't lead. I'll probably buy it in 2 to 3 years out of interest but I didn't want a reskin of human kind or to be ripped off and drIp fed expensive DLC.
I installed Civ3, going to play 3 to 5 over again lol.
