Thanks! So you know how HD widescreen is a 16: 9 ratio? Many movies are even wider, at 2. 35: 1, called anamorphic widescreen. One way to get this look is with an anamorphic lens adapter. It has an oval shape inside the glass to bend the light to fit on a 16: 9 sensor, but you get a skinny picture that you can stretch in editing to 2. 35: 1. It also causes wide lens flares and an interesting rack focus distortion like you see in J. J. Abrams' movies (Star Trek, Super 8. It's just one tool, though.

Would love to hear your opinion on this. We are actually filming a documentary web series about a lot of the unseen behind the scenes of various productions (Film, Series, Theater, Concert, etc)
We plan to film the entire series exclusively with GoPro Hero3 cameras. We found we can get crane style and closeup shots using a monopod as a boom mic style extension with the tripod mount on the end. The biggest advantage is it is very easy for us to stay out of the way.
Your thoughts/advice?

You could look directly at the ipad. What the teleprompter does is essentially project the ipad image on a glass plane that is in front of the camera. This way, you are staring directly into the camera lens when reading lines rather than looking off to the side where the ipad might need to be placed in order to avoid it being in front of the camera and blocking your shot. In the final shot, it is MUCH less noticeable or obvious that you are reading something when using this kind of system.

Lots of cams do HD these days in a wide range of prices, there are so many brands that can do HD 720p and full HD at 1080p at standard playback speeds. What is right for you depends on many factors, what are you primarily using the camera for, what other features you need like slow motion, interchangeable lenses, and price range. Awesome high definition videos usually require some post production editing to make it look better than it actually does coming directly out of the camera.

Well I have two GoPros and I shoot Skiing, Aggressive Inline, Car Races, Longboarding, Cliff Jumping, Mountain Biking, and soon to come: Full coverage of my Motorcycle Restoration Project as well as some Water Skiing, SCUBA Diving and Motorcycle trips to the beach this summer just to name a few. I love My GoPros and am thankful for everything they (as a company) have done for me.

In my experience, for weird adapters like tilt, the farther the lens is from the sensor, the less likely it'll work. So short, prime lenses, with wide apertures seem to work best. I bought a cheap, old Minolta MC Rokkor 55mm f/1. 9 lens on eBay recently, and it works well with my macro bellows system and this tilt adapter, whereas my much larger Sigma 30mm prime does not.

If the camera is attached to the teleprompter, like in my design, 45 degrees should always work, because you'll always have the camera tilted towards the talent, right? Even if it's a low angle or high angle shot, the camera is still pointed at the reader's face. Otherwise, you could always adjust the mirror angle if you want to reflect the image somewhere else.

Hay will the black majic box work with canons? I know that there has been HUGE issue with trying to get Full HD video without any digital artifacts on it (the record dot is there if you try to use the HDMI port) I noticed you useing the Lumix so it is probably different, but us Canon guys would love you more!

Depends on the shot if you can save any time in post. Sometimes you can simply blur the top and bottom of the frame to fake the effect, but if you want it to look perfect, I've seen editors draw mattes around buildings, to separate them from the far background. That can be very time-consuming.

Ok cool, im looking forward to seeing the live show on Monday. hopefully the gh3 will have an HDMI signal with the ability to pull different resolutions and frame rates but for now the gh2 is the best option especially if your on a budget (like me. Love your videos BTW i watch all of them: )

I'd shoot karate with a GoPro camera. Yes! I am off on Monday - woop! Great episode this week Griffin; loved the tilt-shift explanation. There's a free (i think) app on the iphone called PowerCam that has this effect but currently it is only available for stills.

VERY cool! I'd definitely be interested in seeing a tutorial.
I'm running an obstacle-filled race called the Warrior Dash in three weeks, and I'm trying to figure out the best place to mount my GoPro. Now I really want to do a third-person shot like you!

I'm not sure. With FCPX, I can capture directly from my iPhone. I can also use the Image Capture app on my Mac to transfer the files. They're H. 264 MOV files, so if you can transfer them to the computer, many editing programs should be able to read them.

Hi Griffin, tilt-shift filimi g has really caught my interest and I would like to use this type of filming for a school project. I was wondering do you have to use a certin lense with the adapter for you to get this type of shot? Thanks Justin

If you're shooting super close-ups, that technique would help minimize depth of field, and you can always use angles and framing to make things look bigger, but it may be hard to make them look real if the details aren't super intricate.

It looks like the best deal on the market right now for a high resolution camera, but it's only 2. 5K resolution, not 4K like many other cameras. I have no need for one, but at that price, it's tempting. I'd love to play around with it.

Yeah, it doesn't look good in low-light, and the field of view is so wide that it's hard to intercut it with normal video. It's a good fit for reality/doc-style video, when the content can be more important than the aesthetic.
