I'm really liking this show. I had forgotten it was even coming on and was really glad to see it show up today! It's so helpful and informational. I never really thought about setting up talking sequences as a rule but just as a visually helpful technique. It is great to know that there is a Psychology that goes into seemingly simple conversations like the ones given as examples. Thanks for another great episode! Looking forward to class next Friday!

The 180 Rule can be broken as long as you show the camera move across the axis, like it does behind the woman at 3: 02.
And characters eyes should always be right, as long as they are looking at the person they are talking to (and nobody switches spots on the set while the camera is set up) no matter where the camera is located. Even in a 3-person scene. Just start with a wide shot to establish where everyone is in relationship to each other.

Another realy good example of desorentation by the 180 rule is in inglorious bastards in the bar scene when the german officer is about to shoot one of the main characters they broke the 180 rule to confuse so you don't know who was aiming to who.
Thanks a lot for the explanation

If only film schools were this awesome at explaining the magic of film, then I wouldn't be 10 years behind or not. Russell, this is the best school of film I've attended with everything so clear and defined, thank you and to all members at Indy Mogul! :)

That would be great, so many people do lens oriented videos, no one I have seen has helped the transition to HDSLR, and the differences in focus, DOF, and even exposure, I know I would benefit greatly from something like that and hope I'm not alone

Hey Russell great show, I have a quick question for you, how do you place the the other videos on top of your main video, I like to learn how to do it so that I can promote other videos in my own video. I'll appreciate your response.

sometimes i flip my footage horizontally in editing if I forget to keep an eye on the 180 degree rule while shooting. If you don't look closely, you can't even tell that it's flipped lol.

Now I got my reasons for me, breaking the 180 degree rule. Anyone always told me that I'm breaking the 180 but I have my reasons, easily to turn the situation around, to get more weirder.

I could maybe do an episode going over the differences between my FX1 and my t3i, showing the difference between DSLR and HDV for HD video. Would that be on the right track?

Yeah, it's the way to go most of the time. Adding more than 2 people was just something I actually had to think on, as I hadn't considered it up until that point.

I was actually filming something yesterday where I accidently broke the 180 rule. Sadly I had to go back and film the shot over again 40 min later

Flipping the image works every so often. All depends on what's in the frame. Clothes with words on them always ruin that!

I can relate! I'm usually in editing and by the time I realize it and it's usually too late to do anything about it.

The TICKER technique was also used in one scene of the Godfather when Marlon Brando talked to Al Pacino in the backyard
