It's a few things. The original set I shot the first few episodes on was much easier to light, I could use my best lens, etc. Then I lost that location and kind of had to set up an area on the fly that doesn't work great for this sort of thing. In the next week or two I'm rearranging that area to give a better space to work with, so hopefully it'll improve. I kept thinking I'd be able to go back to the other set, but now I realize I'm stuck here, so I'm finally doing something about it, lol.

Two online sources are great for affordable light kits. The first and best is Tube Tape. They specialize in green screen materials but have several light kits in both incandescent and fluorescent. I bought a 3 point incandescent kit that came w/ barn doors, light boxes, and stands for just a bit over 600 bucks. A bit pricey but not bad considering all you get. It's not an Arri kit but pretty good for the price. another source is Steve Kaeser through Amazon but mostly for accessories.

My lighting set consists of 3 cheap tripods which I got for about $8 and an adapter that makes them work as light stands, a 500watt floodlight, two twin bulb holders with bulbs from the dollar store and two normal umbrellas which I also got from the dollar store and I've painted silver to reflect more light. It only came to about 69 dollars and kicks out an astonishing 1000watts of light, that can be boosted to 1400watts or more with bigger bulbs.

For cheaper lighting kits, Indy Mogul has a video tutorial back from the BFX Weekend Extra (if I recall correctly, which involves using clamp lights from Wal-Mart and home improvement stores for about $5/$7 per clamp light. I've used two of them to light items when I take photographs, in addition to two very small ones used for lighting a lizard's cage I just happen to pick up from a Goodwill for under $2 each (which comes with their own dimmer switches.

No worries, not really sure where the seller got that info for my lights either (would have to use a light meter or something to accurately compare. Actually if it's not too much to ask, could you perhaps do your own test? Just compare them to whatever other lights you use, with a light meter or exposure meter in camera. Cheers: )

Also. Good cheap alternative for reflectors are the ones made to put in the window of you car. They have circular one that are pretty much the same as the one shown in the video. Keep your eye out at Walmart, Big Lots, AutoZone etc. and clearance bins for really cheap ones. The fold up ones work well in a pinch and are really cheap.

It's this, lol. I'm just going to be doing holiday related things Tuesday night and all day Wednesday, so I thought I would shoot more questions than usual and split it up, since I usually end up doing a lot of writing and shooting in those two days for the episodes on Friday.

You can get a nice pair of 6-bulb Impact flos w/stands used for under $200 if you keep your eyes open on Craigslist and such.
Also I have the exact same LED light that Russell has (Neewer brand. It's awesome, cheap, portable as hell and insanely bright.

I use it when I do chromakey work and it does a pretty good job, but I'm considering getting a fourth light and stand for when I do that because it always feels like I need just a bit more light on the background when using the green screen.

For reflectors, go to dollar tree and get some car sun shades. They have a reflective side and a white side. Basically the same thing but 19 dollars less but without the wire frame around them. A coat hanger will prob work for this.

This is my dirt cheap light kit: clamp lights from Home Depot, some CFL bulbs (two white and one red, green, blue, and yellow, attached to spare or slighly broken camera tripods. It's not professional but it works!

I have a three point lighting kit. It comes with two seven foot stands with umbrellas and a short two foot light. It is actually a photog kit, but it works great for what I use it for. It costs only $60!

Yeah, this sounds like it would work well. The 18 dollars spent on the reflector helps when it comes to portability though, as it collapses to a pretty small size, which is why I prefer having it.

Not sure. it's dimmable, and as far as what it is equivalent to at its brightest setting, I can't find an answer on that anywhere. Anyone else use these that might have an answer for this?
