Just wondering if you wouldn't mind telling me what camera you used to film this project.
Is there also a chance you could show us some of the editing stages later on?

I had a shoot scheduled for Saturday with 4 actors, 2 crew, a stunt choreographer and myself (directing and camera operator) It was a submit for Film Riot and was heavy prop, costume, and set dressing (Firefly fan film. I wound up going in for emergency oral surgery 18 hours before the shoot. wisdom tooth had to be cut out. The cast/crew (including my awesome wife) expected me to cancel. I popped two Vicodin, drank a half pot of coffee and pushed through the pain. Oddly. it turned out great

When I don't feel up to directing I try to calm down and take some time to listen to music before the shoot. I never show up to a shoot when I'm not ready to go, but I never don't show up to a shoot. I get stressed out so the night before I watch some tv, then the day of I get up early and do everything I need to do. usually I start getting into it when all the cast arrives. However, if Im not ready by then I just let them know that I'm tired and stressed, and that usually makes things go better

cont. fairly surprised she knew, I said Well, just some test shots, but pretty much, and her entire face lights up as she say's COOL! and she begins to ride off again, only a little closer to us this time All three of us exhale deep and go on withe scene, with the faint noise of bike wheels in the background but we didn't really care, until a few shots later when during a somewhat morbid speech by our actor/ crew member Greg, we heard Lah-lah-lah-lah-lah trailing behind us cont.

I've been there too, Russ. Sometimes you just don't feel like shooting that day but the thing I've told myself is you're in the crew, these people look up to you, ask you for advice and direction. Be an example. I have to admit that I've not been able to do that all the time but as long as you do your best 90% of the time and apologise if things didn't go so well the rest of the crew will most likely understand if you're a bit cranky or not in the mood for shooting once in a while.

cont. so we reach the clearing and we there's this little girl, maybe no older than 6, riding her bike around the sidewalk. Not really wanting to have the awkward conversation of asking her too leave (plus being in our mi teen, neither of us really had the authority to, we decided seeing her in the background wouldn't really hurt the scene we went about 50 feet from her an began to set up. So right as we do our first take, microphone in check, I hear from behind me cont.

I turn my head back over to my codirector, John, just as confused as I am, I give him the facial equivalent of could you do something? He mouths out the words You're the director. So I turn around, and before I could say anything she says Are you making a movie? cont.

I wiped the now collected sweat off my face, to find during our entire dolly moving shot, she was following us and singing on her bike, I realized I was in the worst director hell possible, and my crew were getting just as agitated as me. So I work up the esteem (being a sort of shy person in life, to ask her if she could skate some were else, but before i could get the words out of my mouth I she looks over and says HEY, CAN I BE IN YOUR MOVIE? cont.

She turns and looks up at him, Papa, these boys won't let me be in their movie, so I began to walk over their, about to explain the whole situation, he looks up at me, frowning, and blurts out Hey, why can't she be in your movie! I freeze, dead in my tracks, just trying to contemplate what just happened, I look over at john and Greg, walk over, pack up our gear, and began walking home. Screw it, were the only words I said that entire walk.

Oh yeah, totally man, the thing is, and this is just in everyday life, I'm generally terrified of any type of social confrontation, and just even like talking to random people, even if just a little girl. LOL, its actually best he said something instead of me, because all those tripods and cranes i personally bought with my money, so some little kid bouncing around an fiddling with em, I probably would have cracked even worse. :)

You guys are lucky those neighbors were as cooperative and consciously respectful of the scene as they were. A few days ago, me and my crew of 2 took our crane, tripod, all our equipment down for a test shoot at this little clearing at the bottom of our hill. I personally go down to this place all the time, and we really didn't have any big agenda, just get some test shots with our new equipment for about 2 hours or so. cont.

A few days ago, me and my crew of 2 took our crane, tripod, all our equipment down for a test shoot at this little clearing at the bottom of our hill. I personally go down to this place all the time, and we really didn't have any big agenda, just get some test shots with our new equipment for about 2 hours or so. cont.

I see that alot of these commenters don't understand the value in intentionally cheesy movies. That's always been my niche style. I'd totally help out totally for free if I were anywhere near you guys, I need the experience! I never get to make videos, nobody wants to get involved and all my previous actor friends have gone out of state for college. Man, this is looking like quite an awesome project!

Oh, wow, that sucks. You'd think the grandfather would at least understand. What an arse. Still, your friend probably could have chosen a better way to tell the kid to leave, you know, just sort of explain it in kind words. You guys were a bit blunt about it. Might not have worked, but it probably would have had a better chance, and less likely to make the kid chuck a fit.

Looks so much fun! I did a short movie with my friend and we were only 2 people behind the camera and at the same time in front of it. The sound turned out to be really bad, but still. with only 2 people we manage to create a 20 minutes film. :) If we had a crew like yours it might have been a success! :D

You don't need a permit. Police would only arrest you if it looked like you were a danger or if they weren't obviously fake, but having the whole crew there, along with the lighting and the film equipment obviously indicated that they weren't real weapons being used and no one was in any actual danger.

I can totally empathize with these guys. Once I directed a crew for 16hrs. and by the end most folks were destroyed. including me. After wrap, I could only answer questions after 2 mins of processing, by the time I answered the question, the person had gone to three other subjects.

I'm honestly learning that as I go, and might have it come up in an episode in the next few weeks. We drove around a pretty dingy neighborhood about a week ago (Kris kept saying we were going to get shot, lol, and got footage to use as a background, and hopefully it'll look good!
