Hey Griffin, I use final cut 10 now and I upgraded from final cut 7, before that I had used imovie. At first I really liked how easy to use final cut 10 was, especially since it was a lot like the imovie interface. But as I get better and better with it I find my self enjoying it less and less. Have you used premiere? I am thinking of switching to it, especially because of its ease of use with the rest of the adobe software. Thanks for the great show and I can't wait to see the documentary.

I guess if you have a general idea (within the production team) of what the end result should look like, then absolutely you should get yourself some help for post. Personally, i would probably do things like that myself. Simply because when it comes to editing, i would get very confused if there was somebody else playing around with the files and stuff. But hey, thats just me. But like i said, it all depends on the size of your project, some help might come in handy for bigger gigs

Money that goes to a celebrity project is money not going to an indie project.
Though the statement is clearly true, it would be fallacious to draw from it that celebrity projects take money away from indie projects as if the money was going to be pledged on KS regardless of the project. Most traffic to pages is from third party pages or direct searches on KS. So if anything, celebrity projects get indie projects more attention simply by getting eyes to the site to begin with.

You can do the same shit (and even more) with a simple cheap laptop and Sony Vegas Movie Studio suite (or if you have the money you can get the big Vegas. If you have the money to buy shitty apple crap, you should rather put that money into filming-gear, good lighting, props and good actors. Just saying. if you wanna be indy, don't be like the industry.

I have no issue with celebrities using websites like Kickstarter or IndieGoGo for crowdfunding their indie film projects. Sure Zac Braff could have gone off to a studio and perhaps raked together the money, but that no longer makes it an independant film. I think celebrities using crowdfunding sites actually benefits other smaller film makers as it creates greater exposure for this relatively new funding platform.

Griffin, 3: 24 you mentioned using a separate Project + Event for each interview. Did you consider creating a 'Compound clip' for each interview instead? You could then use 'Favourites' to highlight the good parts of the interview. I only mention this as it seems like you could have saved yourself from creating multiple projects. In either case, there's many ways of doing the same thing.

I agree with Kevin Smith. After Zac Braff made his Kickstarter for his film a few of my other film majors friends had a huge debate over whether it was fair. Braff has enough sway in the industry to get funding from the Weinstein Brothers or Coppola or any company. Kickstarter should remain for the people who need money to create there first few projects to create a name for themselves.

This isn't quite the way I would recommend editing with more than one person, it's still inefficient. I usually have a file server running which both machines can connect to, so every edit we make is instantly accessible to the other person. Running an external drive across the room takes time and can create inconsistencies in the projects. The server also provides another backup.

I completely agree with Kevin Smith! I was miffed when Kristen Bell, Zach Braff, and James Franco begged us for money! I just finished my feature doc called Stolen Education and I've edited a few feature films as well as directed and I'm always pleased with your videos. keep up the great work!

If you are cutting down all of your interviews in separate events how will you manage all of them when it comes time to cut the film without jumping in and out of events copying and pasting the clips that you need. Have you got a workflow lined up for that?

Definitely, although I'm not sure how FCPX's auto-saving would interact with DropBox's auto-uploading. (I don't need it to share a new file every few seconds) I also don't want new files appearing in FCPX's directories while it's in the middle of editing.

My shutter speed ist already set to twice the frame rate and closing the aperture will lead into a decrease of shallow depth of fieldor am i wrong? It would be nice to have shallow depth of field but it seems like I do not have any other option: D

personally, i would suggest (if you can afford it) going for either a solid state, flash memory, or a fusion drive. All of those are much faster than any Serial ATA drive, regardless of the RPM

I actually like trackpad editing so much that I don't even own a mouse. I even use a trackpad with my iMac. I really like being able to two-finger scroll left and right through the timeline.

FCPX uses the term project to mean sequence or timeline. So we can edit with many projects. I duplicate one of his projects before I cut it up, and rename it, so we can retain every version.

if it's what the fans want, then I'd see nothing wrong with celebrities using crowdfunding, because of the fact that we want it, it would push the creator to make it that much better.

You can open the project files side by side (by virtue of them being named distinctly) and copy changes to each other or to a third project file by copying sequence timelines.

Definitely. A server would be ideal, but for a small operation this works well. I also don't know if FCPX would be able to handle project files updating while it's running.
