Before leaving for Thailand, Griffin adds some convenient new features to his tripod! stonedcommander: Right, anyone can be a filmmaker. And on top of that anyone can E-beg, get cash to fund their projects instead of taking any personal risk.
Good luck with your project but please rethink taking others money for it. Just make a film you can afford to make and if you choose to give it away free then that's cool.
I am spending between $500. 00 - $1, 000. 00 on my movie, taking all the financial risk and not taking advantage of good people. If you and others see nothing wrong then get begging.

Classic model: Finance film up front with wealthy donors. Make a movie. Sell it for $12 in theaters.
Kickstarter model: Finance film up front with audience who's excited for the film and wants to be part of the process. Make a movie. Sell it for $5 online.
I don't see anything wrong with that. This trip is certainly part of the film's budget; my Kickstarter backers know that, and trust that I'll work hard while I'm here. The new tripod parts are personal expenses, not in the film's budget.

Griffin, I always thought the ball head levelling and center posts were a trade off. I have a tripod with each. My ball head only gets to about 5. 5 feet which often isn't tall enough and my center post is hard to level. I'm curious, the center post you purchased seems to be around 3' long. I would think that levelling it, then tightening it down would still be a challenge. I'd love to hear how it has served you in Thailand. Was it worth it? If so I might be in the market for a new tripod.

Kickstarter rocks! Don't like it, don't contribute. Now we can all be patrons of the arts. What happened to the film industry? They have failed to adapt to changing times and technology. Now anyone can be a filmmaker.
My goal is to use kickstarter to finance a movie, pay the cast and crew, then give the movie away on the Internet. No profit motive, just pay the cast and crew and create to boot.

reply

So your kickstarter campaign gets you across the world and new equipment. You and everyone else that uses kickstarter should be ashamed. So now when you want to make a feature length film you will use kickstarter again? OMG. What happened to the film industry? Lost all respect for you and other phonies.

Your comments are out of line. You should show respect to the people who share their filmmaking knowledge with you for free. Indy Mogul is for a community of filmmakers who value each others knowledge and creativity. If you don't find what you're looking for at Indy Mogul, look elsewhere.

I love Indy Mogul and Griffin's a great host but any time he starts mentioning prices I get scared. I have a $40 tripod and a shoulder rig made out of $10 worth of PVC and screws from Home Depot. episodes like this are lost on me.

Ballhead + Videohead leveling = NOT A GOOD IDEA!
It's good if you use 701HD head but if you use heavier, screw it and buy a proper tripod. It's good if you use GH2 but that's it. So, quite a bad idea to share.

Definitely. I'm always trying to use the least number of links in the chain. But I'm impressed how solid this current set up is. (A ball head under a fluid head would be a little crazy though)
reply

thanks for sharing your set-up, Griffin! been looking for a cheap and reliable way of standardising my quick-release plates. the Giottos M621 looks like the right tool for the job.
reply

I love my Manfrotto 502AH fluid head but $60. 00 for the mounting plate alone I have a pile of the Giottos MH621's which are a perfect match with the Manfrotto 357 (same size/design.

Griffin, When you right your scripts for Indy news. Do you keep reading it aloud and change anything that sounds off? Or what do you do? Would help me alot.

Are all tripods able to be taken apart like that? I was looking at my cheapo one the other day and couldn't figure out how to take it apart.

What ever happened to bfx and DIY's. I like what you do today but I would use the old tutorials as props. If possible please bring it back

It's weird how I never tried Sriracha and yet, I am a big fan. Can't wait to watch the documentary. I wish they had Sriracha where I come from.

If the column doesn't work for your tripod check out the Manfrotto 438 leveling base or the Acratech leveling base.

What is the difference between your Manfrotto 055XB and my 055XPROB? Love this Combination 701HDV + 055x(PRO)B too: )
