This week, day four on the set of Russell's short film, featuring a few close calls for both lights and actors! Michael: also you can can (in After effects) open the scale in the key-frame area, and after you set the scale alt-click the key-frame button (the clock-watch next to scale) and type in wiggle (x, y)
x - how fast\rapid will it wiggle. keep it low, slightly below 1 (for me around 0. 6 normally worked well)
y - how much wiggle (in pixels) for something natural looking i'll say somewhere between 30-50 would be good
1. this works on nearly anything in AE
2. play around until you find the right amounts

The LED lights are great for simulating nighttime lighting, like we would have gotten from the lights if they had been left on. The best thing I can say to get the most from them is to buy a battery pack to run them instead of using AA batteries. You get brighter light that way. The batteries I have for mine are the NP-F970, which run for a VERY long time (used to power my FX1 for 10-12 hours. You can find non-Sony versions for about 20 dollars on ebay and Amazon.

I've been watching your videos for a while now, I have to say you are a very creative person. For this video, I saw a police car behind the set, and I'm just wondering if you need a City permit to film in that area. I'm in Orange County, and I asked for a permit, they said it was $400 an our and I had to have a 1 mil insurance coverage. Oh! I was forgetting about the $1000 deposit too. Please tell me there is a way around this: -)

I know people in the business and its disgusting how some people behave during shooting. Some will blast their stereos, one guy was blowing a trumpet. They do this because some filmmakers will pay them to stop and they know it. Looks like you guys are gaining some great, real life experiences on this shoot. Lots of fun watching this series, awesome in fact. Thanks.

Love the Series I am shooting my first short later this month and I will be in the same situation of not having any power source for my lights at night, what was your experience like with just using the LEDS? The footage still looked great, do you have any tips for using them?

Is the zoom at 0: 25 an in-camera zoom or did you do it in post? If in post, how did you make it look smooth yet not make it ovious that it was post? Random question I know, but I'm editing a short right now and I could do with a zoom like that (if it's post.

Great stuff Russell. I've watched every single one so far. This is a great addition to Indy Mogul. Very valuable insight and gives people the excitement or the push back that they need when considering working on a film. Great job; )

When I was doing the short videos for Movie Quest, we used to use wholesalecostumeclub. com a lot, so I can definitely recommend them. Helped they're in NJ so I would make the drive and pick them up to avoid shipping charges, lol.

I did that in After Effects in post just to make sure you could see us there, lol. Just make sure to turn motion blur on when you do any movement like that and it should look at least SOMEWHAT natural. Hope that helps!

It was from my friend Ab, and there's a link to his soundcloud page in the description (I think. The song is called Early Western Friday, and if he doesn't have it on there, I'll bug him to upload it for you!

Another great video! It always surprises me the way you actually manage to do a very complete BTS video of each day of shooting, including the interviews of the actors and the crew! Just splendid! :P

I have a question. I am a young film maker working on a large scale project and I have a full 1080 hd camcorder. Do you think that is a good camera choice? I also have a tripod.

I know you didn't ask me, but I'd give it 8/10. Its a bit difficult and overwhelming on the first use, but once you get the hang of it it moves smoothly.

It's great watching you guys shooting and planning like this, and it's really helpful as I'm directing my own short film at the moment. Can't wait to see more!

Hey Russell, what's a good website to get movie costumes for cheap? I'm shooting a web series and was wondering if you know a good website for costumes?
