Panasonic GH5s // History Deep Dive

Erik Beck breaks down the general history of Panasonic and the lining of the popular Indy filmmaking camera, GH5s. Griffin Fearless: What was Eric's first camera? It looked a lot like the PV-GS35, which was my first camcorder in 2005. That thing was amazing for its time and my knowledge level. 30x optical zoom, a whole 720 x 480 SD image. seriously though I learned how to make movies on that thing. Then jumped the Canon HV-30 for crazy mind blowing HD in 2009, and then to the GH3 in 2013. which I stuck with till 2017 with the GH5. Now I use that and the BMPCC4K. It's wild how much technology has evolved in the last 15 years since I got started making movies.

This is a fantastic series. When I first entered the industry I was really confused about what differentiated a Canon 5Dii with the 5Diii. Not terribly hard to search for info, but back then, I had no idea what to look for. This is an awesome way to look at the history of these tools that pervade our work places, especially for those who are new to all of the nuances. Really looking forward to the next one. Thanks for doing these.

I kind of want to see an episode focusing on the Canon Vixia series. I used a Vixia HF R300 for years before upgrading to the G40. The interface is the same, but the camera is about three pounds and $1500 more. It's interesting to me that they're in the same product line, despite one being a very hobby-oriented vlog style camera from 2012, and the other being a heavy hitter in the prosumer market.

Full-frame is absurdly overrated and most cameras can't shoot log properly (8-bit storage codecs are unacceptable) While the GH4 was a massive thing, I personally think the G7 was the real game changer. Anyone can buy a G7. They were so cheap compared to the GH4 and did 4K at 24/30fps. Came with a decent lens too.

Best summation of the evolution of Panasonic and their camera lines. I was elated to see that even through Panasonic has constantly be in competition with other cameras, they have been the first in many categories. I personally own a GH3, and will continue to be a Panasonic loyalist.

_Next deep dive subject: _ shooting with 360 cameras, editing the shots and finishing with over-capture. Great for travel shooting where you just carry the camera and shoot everything, then use that footage to do the panning and tilting and zooming in post.

Gh5s is a great camera. I think for 2019 crow they need to upgrade the resolution to 6k 10 bit and 4k 60fps in 10bit. And dont buy this camera if you want to shoot video using autofocus. its terrible in this regard. other wise Gh5s is killer camera in market.

Should I sell my GH5 and trade up to a GH5S. Been looking at A7III but the 30min record time put me off and the S line is very pricey not to mention more limited 4k than GH5. I assume bigger sensors more heat and processing required.

You really need to change the title to The History of Panasonic. It took you 8 minutes in a 10 minute video to kind of talk about the GH5s, and there wasn't anything that you revealed that hasn't been talked about before.

Still shooting GH2 for work. hacked as expected. its has held up very very well over the years for our production work. they are surly ready for replacement now. but dang those hacked gh2 was a epic back in the day.

I see they still have those loose triangular metal parts for the strap to attach to. Never noticed it before Casey Neistat mentioned how much of a pain those are when they rattle around and bounce off the body.

Whaaaaaaat i thought it was about GH5s, its just an history of the panasonic cameras: /, anyways its always good to know the history too, but come on can you really make a video all about GH5s? thanks guys love you!

wait a minute that Tester 13 hack was ACTUALLY available for the GH1 as well. did it in 2010 mainly for the higher bit rate. We couldn't afford a 5Dmii for this low budget indie feature we were shooting haha.

I'm running a Panasonic HVX200E Developed back in like 2006 it is more or less vintage by now, but it was a professional camera back then. Are they any good compared to armature cameras now?

i really really want to love panasonic gh4/5 BUT the huge problem is autofocus. with canon's dual pixel AF, i can run around and never have to worry about subject out of focus.

As usual. I'm so late to the party! Very cool piece and loving that history. I'm gonna bet that MFT and GH line has a few good years left in it. Thanks again!

Small inaccuracy: Metabones speed boosters first came out before the GH4 and costed about $400. I had one with my GH3 and Sigma 18-35mm (Sigma's first art lens)

I 've been using my GH4 mainly for photography. have not shot a video yet. I am new to photography and got the GH4 to learn both photo and video.

Currently using a G85 with a Viltrox EF-M2 speedbooster, Tokina 11-16, Sigma 18-35, and a Sigma 56. Paired with a Ronin-M and I'm set!
