Sony A7C - Better than the A7S III?

Sony A7C - Better than the A7S III?

Is the Sony a7C the ultimate pocket cinema camera? Daniel: Using a full-frame camera for vlogging is massive overkill. And it doesn't matter much how small and light your camera body is if your lenses are huge, heavy, and expensive. And there's no point in using a full-frame camera with just a slow kit lens.
If you want to get started vlogging, try Micro Four Thirds, especially Olympus. Dave did a great video on the OM-D E-M1 Mark II as a vlogging camera. I own one, and it's good for that but even better for sports and wildlife photography. You can still have shallow depth of field, it just might not be AS shallow. But, for vlogging, who cares?
And, if you're worried about low light, just get a speedbooster. I have the Sigma 18-35mm f1. 8 Art lens, and it becomes an f1. 2 lens on Micro Four Thirds with my Viltrox speedbooster. Because my E-M1 Mark II has phase-detect autofocus, this Canon lens can still autofocus quite quickly and accurately on it.
The E-M1 Mark III is available for around the same price as the a7C, and it can output 12-bit RAW video to an Atomos Ninja V with the latest firmware, so you can grow into it. This also seems like overkill for vloggers, but it's great if you want to get into more cinematic work.

I don't see why anybody would pick up an a6xxx camera Full Frame we all want it mmm. I totally disagree. It's all about MONEY. First of all for those out there who cannot afford FF glass an 6xxx will be their first choise. FF glass is twice and even three or four times more expensive. Then. For those who make video and need to invest in other stuff other than the camera body. they don't give a sht for Full Frame! s35 is been the standard for decades and you are getting the same video quality (4K 4: 2: 0 8 bit 100mbps) with both cameras. They will rather invest in audio, glass and other equipment before buying a Full Frame camera with Full Frame glass.

20 REASONS A7C IS IMPORTANT:
1. crammed prior Sony tech into this smaller body
2. smallest FF camera on the market
3. weights only 1 lb.
4. full inputs/ports
5. battery FZ-100 from A7III
6. micro-HDMI port
7. single card slot
8. mic and headphone jack
9. A7III screen but flippy
10. better port doors
11. weather resistant
12. easy to use Fn button
13. 7 steps of AF transition speeds
14. 5 steps of AF responsiveness
15. eye-detection in video
16. one of Sony's best AF cameras
17. same 24mp still images/video as the A7III
18. almost same IBIS as A7III
19. better skin tones
20. good value

YES! Finally Sony added a fully articulating screen into the A7C like on the Canon or Nikon bodies, and not just kept the same 'kind of' articulating screen that's been on the A6000 line of cameras. The ONLY thing I will say though and I don't think that Indy Mogul covered this, for professional photographers that need a Dual SD Card slot, you're probably best with going to another Sony camera, because the A7C has only a single SD card slot.

I rather wish the hdmi wouldn't block the flip-out screen: ( since most of us use a separate source for mic/audio anyway, connected straight to the computer or to a deck.
That's literally the only thing I've only been looking at, but haven't upgraded to the a7c yet (currently using the a6400, but I kind of want a full frame to get more in frame with an affordable 35mm lens at the same distance, plus nicer background blur)

it's amazing! i switched from a Canon M50 to a Sony A7C, takes getting used to the system and the colors from sony, but i can definitely see the power in fullframe and the Sony System and not forgetting access to the amazing E Mount Lenses, i know i can upgrade, and still use my E Mount lenses. but at a cost $$$ love the positive reviews, nice to see this, than some sour faces shooting at how bad this camera is.

I really prefer the A7III! I have played with both of them and the A7III has much better ergonomics, better stabilisation, more customizable buttons. etc. All the good (internal) things you mention about the 7c have already been implemented in the A7III by firmwares. If you have tiny hands and you have a thing for compact things. go for the C. otherwise, stick to the A7III.

Ok I bought this camera couple months ago right when they relisted. I returned it back. Here is my problem. Color not too good comparing to canon, I had som flikering plack lines no metter what I would do. Tried on couple different lens and still had issues. Also no touch screen wich is not a deal brack from some other but it was a big deal for me.

The simple answer why to pick the 6000 series (or any APSC system) is the glass. Going full frame can be a trap if you don't have money to buy full frame glass. There is a reason why most of professional filmmaking has stayed super 35 and it's how costly lenses can be to cover these full frame sensors. And, we are not even talking Anamorphics.

In LOVE with my A7C. Went from an OG A7 to this, got it barely used for $1525 and I'm continuously blown away. With a Tamron 28-200mm that crops to 300mm, and a wide-angle prime. I'm off to the races!
This is basically what Sony does to their PlayStations. Release the big one, a few years later, the Slim comes out. This is that.

I wonder why Sony wouldn't consider a wider lens as a kit lens? At least 20 or 24mm as the widest point of zoom? Especially if this camera is promoting as a camera for vlogs. And now it looks like Sony pushing their customers to buy 20mm 1. 8 as additional $900. Which is kinda too much for beginners this camera is oriented for.

I had the A7iii and switched to the A7C. Strangely, in the A7iii, the video file numbers always reset to C0001 whenever you formatted the SD card. Making it a bad choice for narrative filmmaking. Thankfully, the A7C doesn't suffer from that brainfart. I am very impressed with what I get out of the A7C, even with 8-bit files.

this camera and kit len $2100 before tax. if you stick with 1 len which non of you will. sony FF lens is no joke. $$$$ you pay for that FF price. each len cost a lot. now you looking for $3K + system. that quiet a lot of money. 1k-1. 5k make more sense for vlog and not pro shooter. nice video, and i like it

First of all great review man. I have been using sony a6400 apsc camera for about a year now and I am really narrowing down to A7c full frame as my primary focus will be videos. I have two apsc lens 1) sony 18-135mm oss and 2) Sigma 30mm f1. 4, do you think I can use these lens with new A7c full frame?
reply

Plastic-ee? Its a magnesium frame.
Short n sweet upgrade notes from the a6000 series,
Full frame
Better color science ( same as a7sii )
Post stabilization in Catalyst Browser ( same as a7siii )
Other than that its not better than A7siii for obvious reasons

I do NOT like the small magnification and too low resolution of the EVF, I like the placing of the EVF a lot I wish all future Sony cameras will have the EVF out in the corner! By the way. I NEVER makke video, I wish Sony will seperate still and video cameras more!

The ev is 2. 6 million dots that pretty good an was tops just 2 years ok. The back screen is really not that good at only 1. 2 million dots just saying my em1 has a 2. 6 million dots no issues for photos here.
reply

Probably this feels like using a Sony a5100. SD card are in the same place and has a flip screen which other 6000 series didn't had and control dials and that is smaller apsc and this is smaller fullframe

Hi there, nice review! I am thinking to buy it as a backup cam for A7Siii, mainly in order to take a larger stills. What do you think about the picture quality compare to A7Siii? Thanks in advance!
reply

As a hobbyist, I will keep using the a7III and hopefully one day Sony will release the Mark II of this camera and fix all the problems people have raised.
Finger crossed.
