Much fun playing the XL/XE port of Joust. (About as identical to the arcade version as it got at the time) Particularly when mastering the bounce mechanic, as you could not only speed a fall or ascent but also skip between the platforms on the right side. Looks like the VGA version doesn't let you tease the lava monster though. Never seen it jump all the way out of the lava until now.
Also one of the jerky things to do was to hover over the other player's location when they beamed in. (With PvP mode enabled. I recall there being a more co-op friendly mode where you couldn't collide with the other player. But then you could be a jerk by stealing kills or eggs)

My dad got that with a bunch of shareware disks. Maybe I must've chosen it so that we would have enough disks for a good price. I recall the graphic glitches like what was shown in the video, but I don't recall them being that bad. On the arcade and VGA versions, it would be possible to have your ostrich bounce on the middle platform on the left while going right and go through that little space on the right. That would create a -duplicate- image of the ostrich on the VGA version.

always has been one of my favorite arcade games, tied only with burgertime, but I've sunk so much of my time in this game. hell, its one of the first games I ever played (and probably the first I was ever any good at) and may be what started my interest in bootlegging games, as I originally played some junky version on my dad's old apple computer he rigged up with innumerable old games, of which I'm sure next to none were legit, some 16 or so years ago. good memories all around! :)

Nintendo made their own version of Joust and called it Balloon Fight. It had a sequel released on Gameboy and Gameboy Colour, which also got a Hello Kitty re-skin on the NES. Balloon Fight was also the inspiration behind one of the better single player mini-games in Nintendo Land for Wii U. Anyway, back on the subject of Joust, did you know there was a 3D version released later on the PC? I presuming it's bad since I couldn't figure out how to get around in that game.

During World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, they created a questline where you ride a flapping hippogryph through a lava-bottomed cavern and used a lance to defeat flying enemies while you collected dragon eggs from the cavern floor and ledges. You get a quest reward at the end of one of two birds (a blue or a gold jouster. I caught the reference as soon as I entered the cave. I loved Joust as a kid.

Three memories with this. First, it's the inspiration for Balloon Fight, which I love. Second, Shang Tsung can turn into one in Mortal Kombat III. Third, when I went to The Lost Arcade in Bristol (UK, this woman was on a stool playing Joust non-stop for three hours, and it looked like she'd been there for a while before I even got there. She was also dressed as Mario.

Super nifty hearing about this game on older systems seeing as how Joust is honestly my all-time favorite arcade game! I spent hundreds and hundreds of hours playing it as a kid on the family Windows machines of the early 2000s, so it's always cool to learn about it on other systems, especially ones from the time frame of the original release.

It could show up in an adaptation of Ready Player One, since this game is pretty important to the story (along with a bunch of other games. Though of course a movie showing a kid and an undead fiend play the arcade version of Joust is not necessarily the same thing as what you asked.

What's up with the lava in this game? The enemy can carry it around and it destroys the platforms if it touches it. At 3: 06 the lava even jumps out and latches onto an enemy. Is the game messing up, or is it supposed to be that way in this version?
