Ol Blue Eyes had his own Dirty Harry called The Detective in which he played a character named Roderick Thorn. With the success of that movie the author wrote another book. Frank drug his feet on doing it. In the late 80s they decided to make the movie. Frank was once again giving the opportunity to star. He turned it down. So they asked Arnie, Sly, Harrison Ford and Eddie Murphy. They all turned it down. Oh yeah I forgot to mention the lead character went through a name change to NYPD Detective John McClane. The rest is of course history.

There is a film called The Detective, a 1968 movie based on Roderick Thorp's first novel.
Which is actually a prequel novel to the book that Die Hard was based on
When a movie based on Thorp's sequel went into production, the studio was contractually obligated to offer Frank Sinatra the lead role. Sinatra, then in his early 70's, turned down the project.
The story was altered to update it to a modern setting and had no connection to The Detective's storyline, so it was renamed Die Hard.

Frank Sinatra starred in The Detective, Tony Rome, and The Lady in Cement. So it wasn't a reach for him to be considered for the lead in Dirty Harry. It probably wouldn't be as good with him in the lead given that his tough guy roles were in movies that are largely forgotten but then again Coogan's Bluff and Play Misty for Me are as forgettable.

Will Smith turned down at least 10 Hollywood intense roles, including Superman, Mr. & Mrs. Smith & Django. These ALMOSTS had reasons, as to all actors. Eventually we get a final picture and don't have to say anything about casting. WHAT IF - They'll let us choose the cast to a Hollywood movie by social media? THAT WILL BE A GREAT IDEA

Clark Gable was almost cast as Tarzan back in the 30s, but the studio thought he was too unknown, unlike Johnny Weissmuller.
Weissmuller made less than 40 films and has a star on Hollywoods Walk of Fame; Gable was in more than 80 films, won 3 awards (including an Oscar) and also has a star. Whos the unknown now?

What makes Tom Selleck's story even worse is there was a writer's strike in 1980, at the same time that production started on Raiders. It turns out shooting Raiders would not have conflicted with Magnum PI. Selleck was sitting on his ass waiting for the writer's strike to end while Harrison Ford was shooting scenes.

I am really surprised that Dougray Scott is not on this list. He was actually cast as Wolverine in X-Men, but had to turn down the role because he was already doing Mission Impossible 2. (Sucks for him, great for Hugh Jackman. However, I actually think Scott would have been a pretty awesome Wolverine.

Oscar Nom? Really, that's the way you're saying Oscar Nomination?
Britney Spears would have been terrible. She's disposable Pop, being it in music, television or movies, she wouldn't have been suitable for a film such as The Notebook.
