THE HITCH-HIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY should have been a movie, just not THAT one (the same with quite a few films: THE PRESTIGE leaps to mind); as someone says below, it had been a radio and TV serial, each different from each other and the book with changes to suit the medium; the film was made by people who thought they had better ideas than Douglas Adams: God Almighty, were they wrong.
WATCHMEN was quite a good realisation - of a comic book, which was itself already a very visual and 'spoken' medium, with careful surgery to excise the complicated multi-level narrative. Likewise, THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN could have made a perfectly good film if treated right with faithfulness to the comic.
THE GREAT GATSBY could make a perfectly good picture if done right; the 1974 version was well cast and visually right, but missed with handling some sequences and turning prose into dialogue

I actually wanted The Dark Tower series adapted by Ron Howard. Turn all eight books Into a nearly 3 and 40+ hour films. I wanted that film remake treatment to happen, after the box office disaster of Solo, A Star Wars Story. The less said the Han Solo origin film, the better. Much like how Peter Jackson did with the lord of the rings and the hobbit.

Currently reading the book of lovely bones, its so gripping and tragic
Im watching the film after
Given I read the shining BEFORE the film, I can now understand why King hated Kubricks adaption. At least doctor sleep was an improvement, but they missed out key details about abra beinv RELATED to Danny and how he doesnt die

A lot of people are missing a key point in this video. A lot of the items listed here most likely would never work as a movie. Especially a mainstream Hollywood movie. In other words, the film versions didn't just fail to capture the charm, narrative, or character of the book- it's almost impossible to do in the first place.

Percy Jackson, the giver, and a series of unfortunate events (2003) are the worst book to movie adaptations Ive ever seen.
I get a lot of flak for being super critical of them but when I watch a movie based on a book I want to see an accurate adaptation of that book, not something that barely resembles it.

. I guess we all forgot about the garbage fire that was Ella Enchanted?
I was recently in a bookstore that offered the book and movie as a bundle. I told the cashier that I really didnt want the movie, so he unbundled them and only knocked the price down two dollars.

I loved the book Beautiful Creatures but they messed up the movie by taking out on of the most important characters and making one actress take on that part and her actual part. They also rushed the whole story along and there was no development for the main characters.

The book is always better than the movie because no matter how faithful the adaption they will always have to leave stuff out. Take Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire for example. The first 10 chapters of that is only half a dozen or so scenes in the movie

According to Alan Moore, every movie adaption of his comics, lol. Hitchhiker's Guide was a radio show first, and a tv series. Inherent Vice had good intentions, but adapting that encyclopedic novel into one movie is a tall order, and that's Pynchon-lite.

The Great Gatsby was an amazing movie (only seen the Leo one. Where on earth is a kestrel for a knave/kes? Read it in school and what stood out was not the story but the language. A page and a half on describing a dew drop on a leaf. Terrible, boring film

50 shades of grey should be on here.
Some of the acting was poor and lacks the capacity to keep most engaged.
Also you should do an updated version. 13 reason why should be on here. It completely goes against the message of the book.

My opinion the lovely bones should never been turned into a book. I have never seen a more poorly written, poorly researched books on this one. From a forensic standpoint nothing was correct. And bluntly, it was a true downer.

Mortal instruments it made a good TV show but it really sucked as a movie because you cannot condense everything that you need to know in one movie and they got arrogant and thought they were going to get more.

Angels and Demons made a better film because it was literally being driven by a ticking clock; Da Vinci Code felt like run run run pause for exposition run run run action run pause again. no natural flow

Nikolaj Arcel is not unknown in Denmark where he's from. Here he is one of the biggest directors of our nation. Watch his movie A Royal Affair, a great historical drama based on 100% true events: )

I totally disagree with The Great Gatsby where the Baz Luhrmann version is concerned! I think that adaptation is incredibly dark, but done with subtlety. One of the most beautiful films ever IMO

Lovely Bones is a wonderful movie. I don't care if it's based on a book or not and if it's being true to it's source material. I enjoyed it as a movie of its own and that's only matters.

The Dark Tower should have been No1 in this list by far. They massacred a masterpiece. Many of Stephen King's books were poorly adopted on screen in the past, but that one was a tragedy

I dont understand the point of this list. Because most of these are not bad movies and did not deviate too bad from the source material. Well accept of course The Dark Tower.

Ill tell you what the problem was with The Lovely Bones. People need to stop casting Mark Wahlberg in things. Hes not a great actor. Marky Mark should have stuck to the Funky Bunch.

I have never disagreed so strongly with one of these lists. Many of these movie adaptations were phenomenal. Yet, horrible movie adaptations were left out. I'm perplexed.

One of the more obscure ones, The Nanny Diaries. I personally loved the book, but the movie changed a lot of details, rushed the story, and missed the point.
